Miami Marlins (2x World Series Champions)

Seems to be a lot for a career .270 hitter. Sure he has power out the ass but he also got hit in the face by a fastball this past season. Some hitters just do not return to what they were before that.

Also, he's only played more than 140 games two times in 5 years. Big risk for the Marlins.

And not one they would have taken if they had any other choice. They just didn't.

Yeah but if he turns into Kevin Seitzer they're royally screwed for the next 13 years. Maybe they didn't have a choice, but man I hope I negotiate with their leadership some day
 Oh I agree, it's the worst deal in modern baseball, because not only are they overpaying him about 5X, he also has an early opt out. When he goes either Seitzer, or Adam Dunn, or gets hit in the face with another pitch, they might as well retract the franchise.

That's $25M a year for 13 years. After 10% to his agent and 39.6% income tax, that's $13.6M a year. Even if he has the best season in the history of MLB each of those years he's not worth that sort of money...

I'm sure the year to year stuff is deferred. The Marlins could literally be paying him for the next 50 years and it wouldn't surprise me

AKA the Bobby Bonilla effect. I think the Mets will actually be paying his kids.

Yup

The Orioles are still paying him too.
If I were him, I'd get "injured" about four years into the contract and then bank for the rest of my life...

He's never hit more than 37 homeruns, driven in more than 105, or hit higher than .290 in any season. He's a good player, but he's never even had one "franchise player" kind of season. This is the most idiotic contract, just based on sheer size and length, in sports history. Typical for that franchise.

I remember when everyone freaked out as the $100 MM barrier was broken, then $200 MM.

Stanton is probably the premier power hitter in the game during a powerless era.

Anything that is scarce and in high demand goes for a premium.

I love watching the dude, just freakish talent.
