HEY FOLKS, MAYBE WE SHOULD LET ATHLETES MAKE SOME MONEY WHY NOT?

Remember ol' Dr. Michael Drake? Love him? Hate him? Harbor a very specific and weird personal vendetta against him?

Well, no matter how you remember his tenure as president, he's going to appear at a U.S. Senate hearing today to talk about "Exploring a Compensation Framework for Intercollegiate Athletes," along with a bunch of other collegiate luminaries. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey should be there, along with former player Eric Winston and a few others.

In response to a query from Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) who described the document signed by Ohio State student-athletes as a “liability waiver,” Drake – who concluded his tenure as Ohio State president on Tuesday but is still the chairman of the NCAA's Board of Governors – refuted that description and, as athletic director Gene Smith and other Ohio State representatives have said previously, said the Buckeye Pledge will not used as a legal waiver for the university.

“They did not sign a liability waiver. That's not true. It's a pledge that all of our students are going to be signing to basically follow the good public health guidelines that you and I and everyone should follow to help protect us against the pandemic,” Drake said. “In fact, the guidelines are exactly parallel to the CDC-issued guidelines that came out just yesterday. And what the pledge says is that you'll wear a mask when you're in public, you'll wash your hands, you'll keep six feet of distance and if you become ill, you'll report this to people to allow you to be protected.

“Specifically in the pledge, it says that whether or not you participate will not affect your scholarship, so it's a pledge not a waiver, which I would not support.”

Drake was set to remain at Ohio State and serve as president emeritus for the next year, but now, he is going back to California instead.

“Dr. Drake personifies the qualities we looked for in selecting a new president: He is committed to seeing the whole student and to supporting all our students. He recognizes the incalculable value of faculty and staff to the University’s mission, and he understands the importance of the public and private partnerships that help us achieve that mission,” John A. Pérez, chair of the UC Board of Regents, said in a statement. “As the first person of color to serve as UC president, Dr. Drake returns to UC at an important point in the University’s journey. This is a homecoming the University of California is very excited to be celebrating early.”

Just sayin': That was a short retirement.

Who cares. He served out his full contract, did an outstanding job as evidenced by every review the board gave him and every metric that matters. UC system swooped in on his way out the door. I can't fault him for taking it. I just hope the new President is as good.

Just sayin': He did a good job on the academic side; however. I wouldn't grade him "outstanding" on handling the Meyer/Smith suspensions.



I hope the new President is even better.
