I get your point. The problem is that the true value of individuals to societies is not really reflected in something like individual salaries.

Those doctors save a lot of lives. Those professors over at Fisher COB have contributed to the creation of considerably more value than football at Ohio State (e.g., Limited Group, Bank One, Compuserve, Worthington Steel, Wendy's, etc.) That value created the jobs that pay for a lot of those football tickets and licensed goods.

If you ask Urban Meyer, he'll tell you that one saved life at the James is far greater than anything that he will do in his entire life.

The President is in:

He sees Ohio State’s main priorities as educating “the next generation of leaders” and creating “new knowledge” through research discoveries that help people around the globe as well as in Ohio.

Drake said he will have “great influence” in filling several key administrative positions that will open across the university, including choosing a new leader for the Wexner Medical Center to replace Dr. Steven Gabbe, who will step down before the end of the year. Ohio State also needs to hire a new chief investment officer and deans for the colleges of business and medicine.

Drake said he also intends to focus on making tuition as affordable as possible while increasing the quality of teaching. He wants to help Ohio State capitalize on its discoveries, but he acknowledged that will be a slow process.
He also wants to improve campus safety and hopes to flex fundraising muscle by showing donors that Ohio State is the place where they can “make the most difference in the world.”

As for The Game:

That includes the Buckeyes’ fierce rivalry with the University of Michigan, who he predicted will lose to Ohio State in the annual football matchup by 20 or more points.
“I see Ohio State with something north of 30 points, and it wouldn’t bother me if Michigan didn’t get onto the board,” he said laughing.

maybe a useful anecdote for our many defending national champions:
Twenty years ago, I met baseball great Willie Mays, a childhood idol of mine. I asked how he felt after making “The Catch” during the 1954 World Series. He answered matter-of-factly: “It was a good play, and my job was to come out the next day and show the people something a little bit better.”
What that meant to me was: Even if you are the best in the world, your job tomorrow is to come out the next day and be better. In fact, that’s how you get to be the best in the world in the first place.

food insecurity as the next big initiative:
After substantial planning, the university is making an unprecedented strategic and financial commitment to address food insecurity with an investment of nearly $15 million in new faculty experts as part of the Discovery Themes initiative. Combined with more than 50 faculty at Ohio State who work on food security issues, we will, over the next decade, commit nearly $100 million to this grand challenge. These efforts are already underway.

Ohio State sees college affordability as a defining issue for our time: Michael V. Drake (Opinion)

For more than 140 years, The Ohio State University has been a leader in teaching the best minds and bringing forth innovations in science, agriculture, medicine and other fields to help solve our world's greatest challenges. Today, we focus on our continued leadership in addressing one of the most important and pressing issues of our time: making the cost of higher education more affordable.

We must do this for students like Ari Toles and thousands like him.

Ari, a political science major, is the first member of his family to graduate from college. Ari's goal is to be an educator, and to help other first-generation college students earn their diplomas. A scholarship made it possible for this Columbus City Schools alumnus to achieve his dream of becoming a Buckeye. When I meet and talk with students such as Ari, I am inspired. They reaffirm my commitment to ensuring that students I see crossing the Oval are not worried about how to pay for their college education.

According to recent federal figures, student loan debt in the United States stands at more than $1.16 trillion. That is why we are taking action.

For the coming academic year, under a plan I will present to the Board of Trustees next month, undergraduates from Ohio will see no increase in their tuition or room and board. This will be the first comprehensive action, in at least 40 years, freezing all in-state costs. As a result of Ohio State's unique circumstances, we are in a position to hold fees this year, understanding that this course of action might not be right or possible for our partners in higher education. We have arrived at this decision based on careful deliberations and discussions on and off campus. In particular, I have valued the leadership shown by Gov. John Kasich, Senate President Keith Faber and Speaker of the House Cliff Rosenberger, in addition to the active participation of our academic and administrative leaders here on campus.

Just sayin': Michael Drake's handling of the Zak and Courtney Smith situation (i.e. suspension of both Urban Meyer (insisting on a 3 game suspension in lieu of "time already servered") and Gene Smith) has elevated him ahead of Karen Holbrook as "Ohio State's All Time Worst President".

If what I’m hearing on the radio about the report being released in slow-drip, Chinese water torture fashion is true, then this head scratcher of a policy is one of the more confounding things that can be laid at his feet. I can’t imagine what sort of reasoning led to that decision (if the report is true).

Yeah no idea what releasing things spread over a week does to help. Should've dumped it all on Wednesday night at 11pm last week and ripped the bandaid off.

Big fat fail for this whole thing. Expected nothing less considering the pressure from the media/public though.
