Javon Ringer (Former RB Michigan St.)

Commited to MSU. That's the way it goes. I guess we are really down to Wells, Gwaltney and possibly Russel if they use him there. This sucks. Wilson and Ringer seemed to be Buckeye to the core and yet no offer, tis is life and recruiting I suppose.

Well, they couldn't expect someone else to take their tests for them. Had they got their academic shit together before, then they would've gotten their offers. Evidently they didn't want those offers all that bad...

This could be Ringer's way of telling the Buckeye Staff to send him an offer. Or it could be he won't qualify here and he has to go elsewhere to play. Wouldn't be the first time a talented player didn't have the book smarts for this school.

C-J STARS DASH FOR THE BIG TEN

Ringer commits to Michigan State
All-Ohio back gives Michigan State oral commitment

By Kyle Nagel
Dayton Daily News

After waiting for months on a scholarship offer from Ohio State University, Javon Ringer found a new favorite suitor.

Ringer, the three-time All-Ohio running back from Chaminade-Julienne High School, has given an oral commitment to play football at Michigan State University next season. He called Spartans coach John L. Smith on Sunday night to commit after spending the weekend in East Lansing on an official visit.

His commitment will not become binding until he signs a National Letter of Intent. The football signing period begins Feb. 2.

"When I met the players and coaches, I liked them and they liked me," Ringer said. "I was very impressed. It felt like it would be a very good fit for me.

"The coaches told me if my knee gets better, I could maybe start or play a lot next season."

Ringer tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during C-J's seventh game, a win against Cincinnati McNicholas on Oct. 8. He had surgery on Nov. 3 to repair the knee.

Michigan State, Florida, Indiana and Cincinnati all called to confirm their previous scholarship offers following the injury. Southern California, which will play Oklahoma for the national title on Jan. 4, offered Ringer a scholarship after his surgery.

Ringer said his doctor and physical therapist have told him that he's ahead of schedule in rehabilitation and he'll probably be able to work out at full speed beginning in March or April.

Despite finishing his senior season early, Ringer's career numbers still rival some of the best backs in area history. In 33 games, he ran for 6,136 yards and scored 78 touchdowns. He averaged 9.94 yards per carry for his career.

Rivals.com ranks Ringer No. 17 at his position nationally and the 11th-best prospect in Ohio.

OSU coaches had previously asked Ringer if he would consider gray shirting, meaning he wouldn't enter Ohio State until January 2005 to delay his five-year eligibility count. Ringer didn't consider that option.

"He just fell in love with Michigan State," C-J coach Jim Place said. "He came back and said, 'Coach, I felt like I was home.' "

Michigan State's leading rusher, DeAndra Cobb (728 yards), finished his eligibility this season. Returning running backs include Jason Teague (688 yards), who will be a senior, and Jehuu Caulcrick (619 yards), who will be a sophomore.

Ringer won't be the only Eagle alum in East Lansing. Defensive tackle Brandon McKinney, a C-J product who served as Ringer's host last weekend, will be a senior next season, and Aisha Jefferson, a C-J girls basketball forward, will begin playing at Michigan State next year.

Paul Harker, a former C-J offensive lineman who finished his Michigan State career last season, is now the Spartan's strength and conditioning coach.

The Spartans went 5-7 this season with a win against then-unbeaten Wisconsin and a three-overtime loss to Michigan. They ranked second in the conference in rushing offense at 238.5 yards per game. Only Michigan, at 255.1 yards per game, was better.

Michigan State tied Ohio State and Purdue for fifth in the Big Ten at 4-4.

Don't forget James Davis, who we still have an outside shot at with a visit. Mike Ford is a stud who also needs to qualify. I'm not sure if he is close or not. Also, if Ringer would indeed qualify I could definitely see him switching his verbal to OSU, if offered.

This is an example of why you should never fall in love with a kid before he's in the fold.

Javon's numbers all Fall were crazy good and many of us on this board really, really wanted this great Ohio running back on the team. Seemed like Javon wanted the same thing. But it may never have really been in the cards, given the lack of an offer.

Now we've really got to sweat Mo Wells' decision and still keep looking for that big power back we may have lost in Gwaltney and Snoop Stewart.

The thrill of victory ...the agony of recruiting.

Interesting. I think this is a very strong indication that Mo Wells is going to be a Buckeye. I don't think Javon would pull the trigger for MSU unless the OSU staff told him he wasn't going to get an offer.

If he verballed to MSU as a ploy to accelerate an OSU offer I think that is a bad strategy that won't pay off for him.

Wish he had gone outside the B10. I hate it when kids like this line up against OSU. Seems like more than a few of them have HUGE days against the S&G.

Grades, grades, grades. Tressel asked him to greyshirt to take a year and concentrate on his studies, I would have to guess. MSU has a program for athletes with bad grades, something many schools like OSU don't provide. Admission to MSU is very easy for athletes. Ringer will go the McKinney route on this one.

If Tressel calls tomorrow and offers him a schollie, I'll bet a pound of bacon Ringer commits to OSU. I have a real bad feeling that if Tressel doesn't, this one will come back to bite us square in the ass.....but how could you blame Tressel for staying away from a kid that's been warned for 3 years to get his shit together in the classroom?

You can't blame him (Tressel) one bit. Especially with how he's been roasted the past couple of years for the Dennis Kennedy, Miles Williams, DeJuan Morgan, etc. situations. He's got fewer schollies to work with, he cannot afford to roll the dice on a guy who isn't going to make it past admissions.

It's unfortunate, but a harsh reality of recruiting.

i think its a shame that javon has verbally committed to MSU, but if that is the place he feels most comfortable at then i think he'll do some good there. i'll watch him on the television with any team, he is such an amazing athlete that i have had the pleasure of playing with for three years and watching him on the sidelines for the past three. if only u guys could meet him and watch him in person you would be amazed.

Please tell me there is no one on this board - other boards maybe but not this board - who really thinks OSU 'LOST' Ringer to MSU.

MSU and Minnie are the answers to the musical question "Whose gonna be there to pick up the pieces after JT breaks your heart".
