Fickell is all the rage on the MSU message boards.

A change is needed but not sure this will be handled properly.

Dream would be Fickell HC and Duzzi comes back as DC.......would be a good start. Need someone with a clue as OC.

I highly doubt Sparty kicks Dantonio to the curb. He’s their all time winningest coach and by Spartan football standards has done V a great job. The administration may push him to make staff changes, that are not deck reshuffling.

I would be highly surprised if he’s not back next year...

This line of thinking is where programs run into trouble and dig themselves into deep holes with regard to revered coaches. tOSU was in a similar situation with Thad Matta three years ago. Matta took tOSU basketball to, arguably, its greatest heights. However, his last 4-5 years saw a significant, consistent decline and there was zero sign that it was going to improve.

Similarly, Mark Dantonio had sparty at their greatest heights in decades from ~2010-2015. Since then, it's been a sea of mediocrity with a smoke and mirrors 10-3 season sandwiched in the middle.

In 2017, tOSU wasn't looking at replacing ~2005-2013 Thad Matta; they were replacing 2013-17 Thad Matta:
2005-13: 230-61 (.790), 5 Conf Reg Season Champs, 3 Conf Tournament Champs, 6 NCAA Tournament, 2 Final 4
2013-17: 87-50 (.635), 0 Conf Reg Season Champs, 0 Conf Tournament Champs, 3 NCAA Tournament (all early exits), 1 NIT

In 2020, Sparty wouldn't be replacing 2010-2015 Dantonio; they'd be replacing 2016-19 Dantonio:
2010-15: 65-16 (.802), 4-1 Bowls, 2 B1G Champs, 1 Playoff Appearance
2016-19: 24-24 (.500), 1-1 Bowls, 0 B1G Champs (note - they still play @Rutgers and home vs Maryland, both winnable games)

Sparty's recruiting is declining, as well. They currently have the 10th ranked class in the B1G for 2020 with their highest commit being #320 nationally. Their highest ranked in-state commit is #17. They have zero commits for 2021.

All true and I don’t disagree with any of what you wrote here. My point is, and understand I live in tSUN and have for 30 years, MSU is not tOSU or even UM for that matter. They identify more as a basketball school than football.

I am in Lansing all the time and have many Spartan friends. They might not like what they see, but I haven’t heard much willingness to run Dantonio out of town. Do they think changes need made, yes. They realize the demise of the 2016 recruiting class has had a big impact. Nothing locally suggests any pressure on Dantonio or the administration to make a change.

Time will tell, but I don’t see it happening this year.

Not sure if this will or will not be a deterrent for MSU to cut ties with Dantonio:
But in less than three months, Michigan State will owe Dantonio that one-time $4.3 million payment after he completes his 13th season. It’s not unusual for contracts to include large payments designed to incentivize a coach to complete a full year or a period of years.

Dantonio’s contract includes a $700,000 payment he gets annually if he is Michigan State’s head coach through June 30. Other coaches have arrangements that theoretically require them to complete more than one year, but also let them get a pro-rated amount if they get fired sooner for not winning enough games.

If Dantonio is fired or retires before Jan. 15, 2020, he is not due the $4.3 million. He would receive a $7 million buyout. Dantonio’s one-time payment is due around the same time he is expected to be deposed in court for his dismissal of former staff member Curtis Blackwell, who was alleged by the university to have not reported a sexual assault to the university’s Title IX office or police.

A federal judge ordered the coach to face seven hours of questioning after MSU’s 2019 season is completed, but a firm date has not yet been scheduled.

He seems to have checked out imo.
The idea he's not there next year has more to do with skeletons in the closet. Does he quit before deposition? Does deposition force a for cause firing?
Does he weather the storm and admin forces Asst changes?

Freeman almost certainly goes with Fickell.
Is pitt ready to fire Narduzzi? Would he want to coach under Fickell at MSU again ? Dont see that working out.
