Mike Dontonio (get off my lawn!!!)

He's a good coach but he's a douche

I seem to recall a lot of people having very bad things to say about UFM too...
Not suggesting Dantonio is "the guy", just that I think he's on "the list" - hopefully we can grow that list with Herman, Ash, Fickell, Warinner...
He hates himself some wolverines too... I mean hate doesn't even describe it. He loathes them in a way that warms my cockles. The offense would be a return to Tressel, but alas...

He's older than UFM. He's not on any future Ohio State coaches list IMO.
Unfortunately I am not sure UFM is going to coach until he is old and gray. I have nightmares where I often wake in a cold sweat and UFM has announced his retirement. That is when I log in here at 3 am to make sure it was just a bad dream. I then try to get my wife to hold me but she never does and thinks I'm just crazy. Of course maybe if I asked for a hug instead if a hander I might get farther?

I had issues with him while he was here as well. I just kept my mouth shut because it was counterproductive.

Let's just say that IMO the Robert Reynolds incident didn't happen in a vacuum.

Without even getting into Gatorubet trolling, I figured Tress would be here for eternity... and it ended pretty fast in terms of football seasons. One moment we were mired in controversy but still winning the Sugar Bowl, before the next season he was gone.
Anything can happen in the world of College Football, it's part of the AD's job to prepare for leadership transitions. We got a little lucky with Urban I think. A massive windfall. But Ohio State will be still be Ohio State when he leaves -- I'd like to think we're not Florida with the imploding and bitterness.

lol

In all seriousness though, I don't want anyone involved with handling the Gholston concussion to ever set foot in the WHAC.

Fair point. There's aspects of Meyer's career at Florida that I hope we never see in Ohio too.

Mark Dantonio quickly tosses aside South Carolina discussion

Michigan State has become a national power under the coaching of Mark Dantonio. The grizzled and confident coach has put together a master plan in East Lansing and has taken the Spartans to the top of the Big Ten along the way, capturing a Big Ten title and victories in the Cotton Bowl and Rose Bowl as well as in-state dominance over the Michigan Wolverines. Danotnio is preparing his Spartans to take on the Wolverines this week, but with the new vacancy opening up at South Carolina following the sudden retirement of Steve Spurrier, Dantonio has already been presented with the question about his thoughts on coaching at South Carolina.

.
Dantonio played defensive back for the Gamecocks in the mid 1970s, which helps make Dantonio an interesting name to mention in any coaching future discussion out of Columbia. While Dantonio may have played at South Carolina for Jim Carlen, Dantonio grew up in Ohio and has coached the bulk of his career within Ohio and the Big Ten. He is also one win away from picking up his 100th career coaching victory, 81 of which have come at Michigan State.

I get the whole alma mater thing but Msu to little sc is a pretty big step down. But I guess sec sec sec. Think urban should take the kentucky job if it comes available?

Texas or USC (the real USC), yes. That would be a step up in terms of ability to get to an NC.
South Carolina is at best a lateral move and an invitation to start all over again to make the team competitive in their conference. It would take a bundle of money - that I don't believe the school has - to entice him to take that on.

I can't see it (real USC and Texas that is) for a few reasons, but one main reason. He's pretty old. In the coaching world, that is. He's 60. If he were 50, I could see it. But assuming he only coaches for about 5 more years, why leave something you've built for a 5 year end to your career? Especially since he'll leave MSU as a God.
