Mike Hartline (OC Ohio Dominican)

Kentucky's Hartline tears MCL, out indefinitely

Lexington, Ky. | Kentucky will have a new starter at quarterback this week when it travels to play Auburn (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference). Coach Rich Brooks just doesn't know who it will be yet for the Wildcats (2-3, 0-3 SEC).

Brooks announced Monday that regular starter Mike Hartline suffered a complete tear of his medial collateral ligament during Saturday's loss to South Carolina. Brooks said the MCL will not require surgery, but Hartline will be out at least a few weeks and possibly the rest of the season.

Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline may not have been a fan favorite over the years, but Kentucky will be going to a fifth consecutive bowl game this season.

This wasn?t sympathy.

Certainly, Mike Hartline has been on the other side. He?s been showered with boos and heckled by his own fans more than any quarterback in the SEC should. He?s had his ability questioned every year, including before this one, since arriving at Kentucky.

Now things are different. They?re different because Hartline is among the best quarterbacks in the country. His 148.9 efficiency rating is the 24th best in the country. They?re different because Hartline has thrown for nearly 3,000 yards and led a mediocre SEC program to a big upset last month against No. 10 South Carolina.

So two weeks ago, late in his final game at Commonwealth Stadium, Hartline was back on the field as part of a plan hatched by Head Coach Joker Phillips. Hartline was put back in the game for one final play to soak it in, and for fans to pay their respect.

Sympathy? No.

This was appreciation.

After five turbulent years as the University of Kentucky quarterback, it was the least more than 60,000 Wildcat fans could do for Mike Hartline. He received the loudest ovation of his career as he walked off the field.

Funny.

Hartline, the object of Kentucky fans? adoration. He?ll be the guy leading the Wildcats into their final game of the season Saturday at Tennessee.

?We thought Mike deserved that,? Phillips said. ?The guy is a stand-up guy. He has handled everything that?s happened to him like a man. We have 16 seniors ... those guys are more than ready to handle all the things that come up in this world because of the things they?ve been through here in the last five years, and especially Mike Hartline.?

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Lexington police say Kentucky starting quarterback Mike Hartline has been arrested on charges of alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct.
Police confirmed Hartline was arrested early Friday morning near the Kentucky campus after authorities responded to a complaint of an altercation.

Sherelle Roberts says the incident occurred about 3 a.m. ET. She says Hartline had been released from the Fayette County Correctional Center.

Kentucky spokesman Tony Neely said coach Joker Phillips is aware of the situation and will make a comment "at the appropriate time."
The Wildcats return to practice Saturday in preparation for the BBVA Compass Bowl on Jan. 8 against Pittsburgh.

I'm always amused when somebody gets arrested for public intoxication. Sorry, but being drunk in public is not a crime. Put it another way: if you are acting obnoxious and not drunk, you're ok; but if you're acting obnoxious and drunk, you're arrested?

Sunday Special ? Mike Hartline ready to prove himself to NFL teams

Just because Mike Hartline is a young NFL hopeful doesn?t mean he is a na?ve one. The GlenOak High School graduate and University of Kentucky starter knows exactly why he

didn?t get drafted last month by any team. He has no one to blame but himself, but he?s past the blame and is moving on.

Hartline was arrested in December for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. He accepted a diversion offer from prosecutors, and if he completes community service and alcohol counseling, he will have the charges expunged from his record. Normally, public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges on a college kid aren?t unusual.

Hartline wasn?t any college kid. He was Kentucky?s starting quarterback. As such, he suffered more than most. The university suspended Hartline for the Wildcats? bowl game, and it probably cost him tens of thousands of dollars as a draft pick.

?(The arrest) definitely played a part,? Hartline said. ?You can?t say it didn?t the way the NFL is now. The good thing is we tried to get all the right information out to all the teams when it happened, such as here was the situation, here?s what happened and here?s the type of guy I am. But the way the league is now, teams aren?t going to take a chance on a guy in the sixth or seventh (round). My agent told me it was a threat to me and it might hurt, but the thing is, only one guy from one team has to really like me.

?Guarantee it played a role, but you have to accept that and move on.?

Now Hartline is one of hundreds of rookie free agents on the outside looking in. Because of the NFL?s labor unrest, teams are not allowed to sign rookie free agents. Normally, Hartline?s agent (Neil Cornrich) would have fielded several calls for his client?s services.

At 6-foot-6, 210 pounds Hartline has the look of an NFL quarterback. He was a three-year starter for the Wildcats. In his senior season, he completed 268 of 405 passes (66 percent) for 3,178 yards, and he threw 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions on a team that played an SEC schedule that traditionally is above its head.

Hartline finished his career with 5,680 yards, fifth in Kentucky history.

During a conversation last week, Hartline did not shy away from talking about his arrest. He owned up to his mistake and he?s ready to move forward.

?If this is the worst thing that happens in my life, I?m gonna lead a pretty damn good life,? Hartline said. ?It blows up more because you?re an athlete and a quarterback. But I?m not going to beat myself up over this for the next three months. I just didn?t want it to corrupt my future.?

NFL FUTURE

Hartline is back in Stark County and staying in shape and sharp for when the NFL settles its labor dispute. A handful of teams called him in the days leading up to the draft to check on phone numbers in case they selected him. Among those teams were Seattle, Arizona, Miami (where his brother Brian is a starting wide receiver), Indianapolis, Carolina and Atlanta.

The good news is, of those teams, only Carolina drafted a quarterback (Cam Newton).

?Right after the draft, I wanted that phone call to have the piece of mind, but I knew it wasn?t going to happen because of the labor rules,? Hartline said. ?If you think about it the only difference between me and the drafted guys is they know where they?re going. I still have to wait.?

Source: QB Hartline signed to future deal
January, 12, 2012
By Mike Rodak

The Patriots on Thursday signed quarterback Mike Hartline to a future contract for the 2012 season, according to a league source.

Hartline, the brother of Dolphins receiver Brian Hartline, was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky last July, and spent the first month of the season on the Colts' practice squad.

While at Kentucky, Hartline was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct, and was subsequently suspended for his team's bowl game against Pittsburgh last season.

The Patriots worked out Hartline last month. He will join the team when rosters expand to 80 players this offseason.

Hartline joins Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett as quarterbacks under contract for 2012. Brian Hoyer is scheduled to be a restricted free agent.

BRIAN HARTLINE LOOKING TO PROVE HE BELONGS, HELP OHIO STATE'S WIDE RECEIVERS GET BETTER EVERY DAY

97823_h.jpg

July 26, 2018 was a life-changing day for Brian Hartline.

On that day, Ohio State named him interim wide receivers coach, just three days after former wide receivers coach Zach Smith was fired, and just eight days before the Buckeyes began preseason camp.

Hartline described that day as “a little surreal,” as it meant Hartline would have the opportunity to coach the position he once played at Ohio State, less than 10 years after he concluded his own career playing for the Buckeyes.

“I’m very passionate about this particular room,” Hartline said Wednesday while meeting with the media for the first time since his promotion. “Just really thinking back on really thinking I’d ever be in this position, I think I’d probably laugh at you.”

Quickly, though, Hartline moved past the surreality of his new position and turned his focus to his new responsibility, because he wants his interim role to be only the beginning of his coaching career.

“I’m looking forward to earning past that, so to me, it was an opportunity that I wanted to capitalize on. It was not the end role,” Hartline said. “I don’t take it for granted.”

“I love him,” Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said Wednesday of Hartline. “He’s doing a great job.”

Meyer says Hartline has brought “instant credibility and knowledge” to Ohio State’s wide receivers, because of his own experience playing the position at Ohio State and in the NFL, and offensive coordinator Ryan Day has also praised what Hartline has brought to the team.

“His energy’s been excellent,” Day said earlier this season. “I think he has credibility with the players. I think they respect when he says something that he’s been through it before. So energy’s been great, and credibility’s probably the second thing.”
