COLUMBUS, Ohio -- New Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann has added one piece to his coaching staff.

Mike Schrage, an assistant under Holtmann at Butler, will be coming to Columbus, a source told cleveland.com. CBS Sports reporter Jon Rothstein was the first to report Schrage could be coming with Holtmann from Butler.

Schrage worked at Butler for one season, joining Holtmann's staff there after stints at Stanford, Duke and Indiana. He was an assistant coach at Stanford from 2008-16, a director of basketball operations and recruiting coordinator at Duke 1999-2008 and student manager at Indiana under former Hoosiers coach Bob Knight.

He was also an administrative assistant for the Ole Miss basketball program for one year.

"Mike has long represented the best in college basketball with his passion and loyalty for the sport at Indiana, Mississippi, Duke, and Stanford. This is a terrific hire by Coach Holtmann," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement after Butler hired Schrage last year.

The addition of Schrage has not been officially announced my Ohio State. Holtmann will be formally introduced as the program's new head coach at a Monday news conference.

Schrage's mentors in the coaching game are as good as anyone's. He's been molded by legends.

His career began as a student manager for Bob Knight at Indiana, and took him to Duke where he worked in various administrative roles for Mike Krzyzewski. He also worked under Johnny Dawkins at Stanford for eight seasons.

Schrage was at Butler for one season before following Holtmann to Columbus.

"Two of the best, if not the best," Schrage said of learning from Knight and Coach K. "They have a lot of similarities in terms of their competitive drive. I learned a lot from Coach Knight. For that to be my foundation, he was an encyclopedia of Xs and Os, and I took in so much. Then nine years with Coach K you learn a lot about basketball, but also about communication with players and team building."

In his various stops, Schrage not only learned from coaching legends, but also learned how to put together a national recruiting plan that Ohio State will pair with Pedon's Ohio roots.

Going to be difficult to replace Schrage in terms of his national recruiting expertise. Some have talked about Netti or Scoonie getting promoted. I'd much rather we add someone who can recruit like Schrage can. We don't get Luther or Carton without Schrage, and Schrage was our main guy in recruiting anyone outside of the Ohio/Midwest. Pedon recruits more of that area and Terry Johnson barely recruits at all.
