With you 100%, I think Yurcich is the best hire we could have possibly had for the QB position. Really, really excited to see what he does with Fields. We'll have to see how it transpires, but having Day at HC and Yurcich, Wilson, and Hartline on the offensive staff sounds like a dream team to me. Only downside is Studrawa and I really hope for our sake (and Fields') that Stud can manage to put together a good seasons, because this offense could be amazing if he does.

    • Yurcich said coming back to his home state of Ohio was a big factor in his decision to leave Oklahoma State and come to Ohio State.
    • Yurcich said he and the coaches have not focused on the players Ohio State lost from last year, but on building with the players they have now.
    • On developing with Justin Fields and his other quarterbacks, Yurcich said it's a long process, and they're nowhere near where they need to be yet.
    • Yurcich said he wants Ohio State's offense to be a quarterback-friendly system.
    • Yurcich said he is still learning what Ohio State's offense does, so he isn't ready to say exactly what the Buckeyes' offense is going to entail this year.
    • On Matthew Baldwin: "Very accurate passer, very cerebral-type guy." Said he developed a relationship with Baldwin's relationship at Lake Travis High School, Michael Wall, and knew he was well-coached.
    • Do you think everybody wants to have a Big 12 offense? "I think everybody wants to win games."
    • "What is a Big 12 offense? I don't think you can just point and click at it," but said he does believe it is predicated on throwing the ball vertically, and believes that is now commonplace throughout the country.
    • Does Fields' uncertain eligibility situation affect how Yurcich will coach the quarterbacks? No, because his job is to work with all the players and make them better.
    • "You can't walk into a room and think you know everything," and said he is asking the "uncomfortable, stupid questions" to make sure he knows what he needs to know.
    • On why he decided to come here, "I think Coach Hafley answered it best when he said he decided to come here because of great people."
    • "To come here is a no-brainer for me."
    • What do you bring here that you picked up from Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy? "I think the biggest thing I learned from him is you have to be yourself. I can't try to be Mike Gundy, and I'm damn sure not going to grow a mullet."

Mike Yurcich on Ohio State: ‘That’s what intrigued me most’

As Ryan Day heads into his first spring practice as the head coach of the Ohio State football program, there are a lot of unanswered questions about his team.

Almost the entire defensive coaching staff changed in the last month, including two new co-coordinators.

On offense, Urban Meyer handed over his whistle to Day, meaning his particular set of offensive preferences is now gone, too.

And while Day and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson are back to provide some stability, new passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich will bring some additional elements.

Yurcich comes to Columbus after a wildly successful stint as the offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State.

His Cowboy offense finished 7th in the nation in S&P+ in 2018, an opponent-adjusted metric that measures offensive efficiency and explosiveness.

That wasn’t just a one-year fluke, either. They ranked 4th in 2017, and 7th in 2016. Only one other program (Oklahoma) managed to finish in the top-10 in all three of those seasons.

With a returning offensive coordinator and a head coach who specialized on his side of the ball, it’s reasonable to wonder how much influence Yurcich will really have. But he said he has to get up to speed on what the Buckeyes do now before he can worry about that.

“For me it’s a time to learn. It’s a critical time for me to develop and to learn what Ohio State does on offense,” Yurcich said.

There are certainly overlaps between what Yurcich has run at Oklahoma State and what Day and Wilson have done in Columbus.

“There’s a lot of carryover, so there’s a lot of similar concepts but there’s a lot different,” Yurcich said. “That’s what intrigued me most about this particular position is the dynamics of this offense and how comprehensive it is and how quarterback-friendly this system is.”
