Ski-U-Mah (pronunciation: /ˌskaɪ.juː.ˈmɑː/, sky-yoo-mah) is a slogan used at the University of Minnesota since 1884.

U of M Rugby captain John Adams had heard Sioux boys yell "ski-yoo!" when they won canoe races on Lake Pepin. He incorrectly interpreted that phrase as the Sioux word for victory, or exultation and suggested it as a cheer for the University rugby team. A co-captain added the "mah" to make it rhyme with "rah" and created "Ski-U-Mah!" The slogan has been used to cheer on the Minnesota Golden Gophersathletics teams, and was written into the lyrics of University songs including the "Minnesota Rouser", "Go Gopher Victory", "Minnesota Fight" and "Minnesota March".

Humm, learn something new everyday ... I'm sure I'll forget about it soon enough. "Row the boat" Sure I'll hear enough of that in years to come.

As a western Michigan alum I'm a bit irritated. I never really liked Fleck, and all his RTB, bullshit, but you can't argue with his results. But the fact that the university didn't do whatever it took to keep him is symbolic of why the MAC will allways be a mediocre conference. You don't let somebody turn your program around and then make no effort to keep them. WMU sank their own boat.

What can they do? How much of a subsidy is the wmu athletic department taking every year? What percentage of a student's tuition is going to keep the AD afloat? At the Ohio Mac schools is it's right around 10%. At some point, MAC schools need to step away from trying to compete and restore some fiscal sanity. Throwing a 3 million dollar contract at Fleck would have been an irresponsible move in the wrong direction.

You are correct, and I've had a few days to soothe the but hurt, but I still think I'd feel (yeah I know who gives a fuck about feelings! Suck it the fuck up!!) a bit less bitter/irritated if theyd at least made an effort to retain him.
