Star Tribune's Amelia Rayno adds her own story to Teague scandal

...

Cultivating sources is a critical part of a reporter’s job. Sometimes that crosses into social gatherings. Having a drink with a source is not at all unusual, and I didn’t feel being a woman compromised me because I was there solely for work purposes.

Since coming to the university, Teague had presented himself to the media as someone who was a good source and not afraid to get blunt. For a reporter, that was extremely valuable. After he arrived, and before Dec. 13, 2013, he and I had drinks five to seven times, all but one of those occasions in a group setting. I also attended several cocktail parties at his house. I was happy to have such a useful window into the program. We talked about basketball, coaches and his plans for the department.

So I agreed to have that drink. But this December night was different. Teague asked me about my longtime boyfriend, as he often did. My mistake was acknowledging that we had just broken up. The switch flipped. Suddenly, in a public and crowded bar, Teague tried to throw his arm around me. He poked my side. He pinched my hip. He grabbed at me. Stunned and mortified, I swatted his advances and firmly told him to stop. He didn’t.

“Don’t deny,” he said, “our chemistry.”

I told him that he was drastically off base, that my only intention in being there was as a reporter – to which he replied: “You’re all strictly business? Nothing else?”

I walked out. He followed me. I hailed a cab. He followed me in, grabbing at my arm and scooting closer and closer in the dark back cabin until I was pressed against the door. I told him to stop. I told him it was not OK. He laughed. When I reached my apartment, I vomited.

Later that night he texted: “Night strictly bitness.’’

The incident wasn’t the first with Teague.

Aw, c'mon, Gopher ladies...seriously? Another one who doesn't have a clue about protecting her own boundaries? You push your uninvited butt into a cab next to me, Buddy, and that cab ain't gong ANYWHERE. It sounds like she let him ride home with her. Or, did she just wait for him to get out while tolerating the aggression and never uttered one word to the cab driver that she was being assaulted in the back of his cab?

If you've read many of my posts, you know I'll usually give the benefit of the doubt to the accuser. But, criminetly! We're responsible for being at least a little proactive in our own defense. Some males cannot comprehend a soft "no". If blunt is what it takes, then it's what it takes. It's not any fun when the harassment involves your livelihood, but then there's a choice to be made, isn't there? If she tempered her response based on concerns about affecting her job, that was her decision. This isn't the same situation as being raped at knife point. She had options.

Much like the actual physical assaults on women by athletes I read about, I am left wondering how the men in these women's lives deal with this stuff.

My wife or daughter comes home and tells me something like this got to the level where they couldn't handle it, had to tell the guy to stop and he didn't or whatever and there is going to be violence.

I'm shocked it doesn't happen more often in these kind of situations.

I think that the women who know that their men would take steps tend not to tell them about it.

Were you even listening to The Dude's texts, Donny?

Complaints against Teague date back to 2012
University of Minnesota and Virginia Commonwealth paid $300,000 to settle earlier claims of gender discrimination.

Two complaints accusing former University of Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague of gender discrimination against co-workers resulted in $300,000 in settlements dating back to 2012, records obtained by the Star Tribune show.

The complaints were filed by employees at the University of Minnesota and at Virginia Commonwealth University, where Teague worked before being recruited by the U.

Teague resigned from the University of Minnesota on Friday after revelations that he sexually harassed and groped two female U employees, and had sent lewd texts to one of the women.

So that statement from Minnesota that he was promptly fired after the very first complaints they ever received was full of malarkey?
It always amazes me the stuff public officials say, knowing full well this stuff is in the public record...
