Game Thread Minnesota @ Ohio State - 10/13/18, 12:00PM (FS1)

You didn't miss anything. Literally one of the worst-executed offensive game plans I've ever witnessed. It seemed like the only pass plays were either 3 yard dump offs or having Bellisari chuck it up and hope someone caught it. The o-line couldn't seem to open up anything either.

didnt help that Combs hurt his foot the prior week vs wisky (i believe on his 80 yard td) and we only had J Wells at RB (and to be fair to that point he wasnt anything special)

That -1 in the 26-1 was the beginning of the end for John Cooper too. They lost 4 of their last 7 including the bowl game.

I knew somebody would bring that shit up

Infuriates me that OSU's good name was besmirched but it got rid of that dumb hick once and for all so all in all, it was a pretty significant win.

BIG TEN TELECONFERENCE RECAP: URBAN MEYER DISCUSSES OHIO STATE'S PASS RUSH, HOW TO BOOST THE RUN GAME AND PETE WERNER'S “INCREDIBLE FUTURE”

97481_h.jpg

URBAN MEYER, OHIO STATE

  • On Pete Werner: "He's an elite player, elite person. He's very gifted. Very talented guy. Big, fast, extremely smart. Says he has an "incredible future."
  • About Dwayne Haskins: "He does a lot of work with setting protecting and directing traffic and he's done a really good job of that."
  • "I don't feel the depth like other people say we have. We're dealing with injuries, et cetera."
  • Says Minnesota's defense is one of the best teams in the country at stopping big plays, and says Ohio State is a big-play offense, which he believes is biggest challenge.
  • On penalties: "It's always a concern. I'm not one of those guys that goes crazy on penalties, especially when you're playing aggressive. But that's far too many." Says the penalties on the kicking game drive him crazy.
  • Doesn't foresee changes on the offensive line when Brady Taylor returns, but Taylor will be a boost to the lacking depth. Says Wyatt Davis, Nicholas Petit-Frere and Joshua Alabi are "coming on," but Ohio State needs more depth up front.
  • Says the issue in the run game is defenses are packed the box. Meyer says possible solutions include throwing the ball a little more or getting on the edge with runs a little more.
  • No update on Brian Snead's status.
  • On the pass rush: "Chase (Young) has been really good. (Jonathon Cooper has) been pretty good. Dre'Mont (Jones), we need a little bit more. Says the pass rush is "Not what we've expected" without Nick Bosa, but it's "getting close."
  • On Denzel Ward: "I saw Sam Hubbard had a great day as well. Denzel, he's one of our all-time favorites here."
  • On Malik Barrow: "He's still rehabbing and working his tail to get back." Says he's still on the roster.
  • Says Thayer Munford is "incredible" and is a "hell of a player for us."
Here are some highlights from the other Big Ten coaches during Tuesday's teleconference.

Two-Minute Drill: Urban Meyer B1G Teleconference 10.9.18

18-09-22-FB-0244.jpg

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer spent some time on Tuesday’s weekly Big Ten coaches teleconference. He took questions on several players and also looked ahead to Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Here are the highlights.

+ Pete Werner is an elite player and person. He is very gifted and talented. Big, fast, and extremely smart. He really cares and has an incredible future.

+ Meyer doesn’t think Ohio State is as deep as people say, but the depth they do have has helped in wins over TCU and Penn State. The Buckeyes are very tough in the second half.

+ Minnesota has a Top 20 defense. They’re one of the best teams in the country in stopping big plays, and Ohio State is a big-play offense, so that will be a challenge.

+ OSU is 118th/119th in penalties/yards this season. Meyer doesn’t go crazy when there are penalties because he wants his teams to stay aggressive, but there are too many right now. Fundamentals, technique, and effort overcome penalties and they have talked about that.

+ Meyer doesn’t foresee any offensive line changes when Brady Taylor returns to full strength.

+ They have talked about using two backs in short-yardage situations, but the issue is that everyone is packed in on them, so they have to get the defense out of that. The options are throwing it or getting the ball out on the edge.

Lol. Bells was a mobile Bauserman and Germany was our best receiver. It wasn’t good.

Bellisari wasn't on the same planet in terms of arm strength when compared to Bauserman. Also, Bauserman was never anything but a QB. Had Cooper not ignored the QB position in his recruiting in 1996 and 1997, Bellisari would have remained at Safety but Austin Moherman wasn't very good.

Football: Urban Meyer talks improving running game in Big Ten Teleconference

IMG_2016-1jwqnbc-1024x683.jpg

As No. 3 Ohio State prepares for a Week 7 game against Minnesota, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said in the Big Ten Teleconference there needs to be something that changes in the running game.

He said the offensive coaches have talked about everything, including placing both sophomore running back J.K. Dobbins and redshirt junior running back Mike Weber on the field at the same time more often.

However, he said that’s not the major issue of why the running game needs to improve. It’s the defensive sets Ohio State running backs are facing.

“Everybody is packed in there on us, so somehow we have to get out of that,” Meyer said. “There’s a variety of ways to do that. One’s throwing the ball a bit more, one’s trying to get on the edge a bit more … as opposed to slamming up in there all the time.”

In Saturday’s 49-26 win over Indiana, Ohio State rushers averaged 3.2 carries, with Dobbins recording 82 yards on 26 touches with a rushing touchdown.

Meyer also said there is no update on the status of freshman running back Brian Snead. Snead has been practicing with Ohio State, but has not been with the team on game days after not traveling with the team to Arlington, Texas, to face TCU on Sept. 15 because of what Meyer referred to as “disciplinary actions.”

Penalties hurt Ohio State

Despite coming out of the first six games of the season with wins, Ohio State has still struggled with penalties in the first half of the season.

The Buckeyes are No. 118 in the nation, averaging 8.5 penalties per game and have recorded 80.83 penalty yards per game, which is No. 119 in the country.

Meyer said this is an area of concern for his team moving forward.

“I’m not one of those guys that goes crazy on penalties, especially when you are playing aggressively, etc., but that is far too many,” Meyer said. “That’s something we have addressed constantly.”

Meyer said the main area of concern is penalties in the kicking game, saying that is the point where he loses his mind because those penalties are “devastating.”

Right but Bells and Baus were neck and neck in accuracy. Nebby passing chart could easily have been a Bellisari passing game...lol.
