Mixed Martial Arts (Official Thread)

What are the odds in Vegas on this fight? I might want to drop some money on it.

As for the fight, I'm really expecting it to not be that close, I think Gracie is washed up AND outdated, with only one form of fighting. He is a legend in the UFC, largely being responsible for it growing to where it is at today, which is why I want to see the fight, although I'll be shocked if he wins.

On a funny note, my brother was in the same bracket as Matt Hughes in high school wrestling and placed over him. Hughes was the favorite to win it 3 of the years in Illinois, and was considered a major choke artist blowing the big matches constantly at state.

I've recently re-met Matt, Tim Sylvia, Robbie Lawyor, and Pat Militech. I thought they were all great guys. I had Matt Hughes record my voice mail greeting also, doubt many other athletic stars would gladly do that. Silvia Has since become the new Tito Ortiz of the UFC, as the most hated due to being a goofy looking ogre who lost the belt for steroids, but I still think he is a bad-ass.

That's the thing right there. Has Gracie ever fought under these rules? How long has he been gone? I've just started getting back into watching these fights after not paying attention since back when everything was allowed and there were no rounds or time limits...

His last fight in the UFC was in April of 1995.

The rules really shouldn't hurt him that much. If anything they might help some from his days. The main rule changes are, no low blows, weight classes (it used to be one large open division for the tournaments), and the you can no longer wear a gi.

The no gi is a large reason that Royce left the UFC, as he refused to fight without it; i suspect the money was another reason, but the no Gi also played a large role in it. The gi isn't really that great of a 'weapon' so I doubt not having one will make that large of a fight difference, it was more of a pride thing. The weight limit can also do nothing but help Royce. The rule hasn't been officially changed much, but the judges in UFC seem to score higher for 'ground and pounding' and punching, then in pride, where submission attempts are given much more value then in the UFC.

Thanks for the explanation...I watched the "classic" UFC fights last night, that were meant to hype this up a little. Gracie said he wore the gi so guys couldn't slide out of his grasp as easy when going for a choke. Another rule I saw that has changed was elbowing to the top of the head, not allowed any more. When on the ground, Gracie was getting a lot of his blows in this way in the matches they re-showed last night...I wish this was going to be on at the bar tonight. I'm going to miss it...:bonk:

Dana White wouldn't sign these fights if he felt that Royce, Tank Abbott, and Ken Shamrock had a chance of winning.

He allowed them back in a few years ago to be nothing more then marketing punching bags. If you listen to him interview he is very much trying to legitimize the sport form it's original days. In doing so he is having the 'old school' get trounced by the modern day fighting athlete proving that it now is more advanced with skill.

Well, the fights I've seen with the new guys are just as exciting as the old-school guys, if not more. At least now the end of a round ends some of the stalemates that used to happen in the old school UFC...
