MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

Nix: Actually, Tom (I believe thats his name) Yawkey died in the early 60's and the Sox were held in a Yawkey Family Trust for 30+ years with no one really "committed to winning," or running the show. Frazee was an awful owner, and the Sox did nothing under the Yawkeys for 70+ years. I don't know how you can say Yawkey was a good owner.

And, you are correct about the Indians, as well as many other teams with bad owners. Success in pro sports always comes down to ownerships commitment to winning. Period. Its all a trickle down effect, like I said:

Good owners hire good G.M.'s and good scouts, who hire good coaches and managers, who draft good players, who win championships. Bad owners hire bad G.M.'s and bad scouts, who hire bad coaches and managers, who draft bad players and suck.

I didn't say he was a good owner, I said he cared about winning. I care about OSU winning football games, but if you made me head coach, we wouldn't win a whole lot of games over the long haul. That might make me a bad coach, but it wouldn't mean I didn't care about winning. There's a difference.

Yawkey himself cared about winning from all I've read. That's all. And the Red Sox are not by cursed today by him or Jean(IIRC his wife's name) and their kids or whoever. And during Yawkey's ownership is when the Red Sox and immediately after it is when the Red Sox had their best shots at winning(46, 67, 75).

True, but no one under any circumstances or in any context should say that
"Hitler did some good things." From the moment she said this I no longer cared how she was treated. If she's stupid enough to say it then she deserves the treatment she recieved.
Whether it's true or not. it is an idiotic statement that will invite a harsh reaction.
This guy was the epitome of evil and should not be remembered or given credit for anything good.

Yankees vs. Oakland in the ALCS.
Phillies vs. Houston in the NLCS.

Yankees beat the Astros in six.

you have to understand that marge openly said that she hated the press....imagine the repurcussions for that....and the honesty in saying that....

as for the hitler comment....it was one blip where she said hilter did some good...for the economy of germany....simple as that.....

think about how many times someone with a vendetta against your could chop off a statement of yours to make it seem something other than what you meant...

hitler was able to rise to power in germany b/c their depressed economy was even worse off than ours at the time....

Ashland, we'll have to agree to disagree, but I agree that it's an idiotic thing to say, no matter what. But I just choose not to judge a person solely on the basis of one statement. I mean, if she'd said "Hitler was great all-around", that might be different--enough for me to judge her by that. But what she said is not something that, to me at least, is a "mortal sin".

And how many people out there say nice things about rotten sobs like Castro. Does anyone really doubt that if Castro had as much power as Hitler did he'd kill a whole lot of people? But I bet I can find lots of leftist radicals with lots of nice things to say about ole Fidel.

Nix and diehard

I understand what both of you are saying and it may be harsh for me to judge her on one comment. I just don't have any patience for anything that has to do with Hitler and Nazi Germany. These nut cases caused the deaths of tens of millions of people and to even consider mentioning Hitler with any kind of a positive spin is kind of sick.
I know we've all said things that we regret and would hate to have someone judge us by that one comment. But I cannot for a second understand the mentality of a person that would give Hitler praise in public or in private.
It is impossible for me to understand her comment and to justify it in way.

Nix, I know what you are saying concerning the left's seeming love for some **sholes like Castro. Some leftist are simply anti American. I don't understand it and I wish more people on the right would call them just what they are, unpatriotic at best, Anti American at worst.
Ya know, That 1940's generation may have been the greatest as Tom Brokaw has suggested. But sometimes I think they gave birth to the worst.
Please, nothing personal to you baby boomers to whom this doesn't apply.

Actually, I hate the Astros, but I know what you mean. The Cubs are media darlings, and I think that's caused some people to overlook the Astros. Their rotation can go toe to toe with the Cubs, and on top of that, the Astros have better bats 1-8 and the best bullpen in baseball, despite the loss of Billy Wagner. The key for them will be Andy Pettitte. I think he'll be boom or bust. He might get absolutely destroyed in that shoebox ballpark they have down there. Aging lefty+short porch in left field+facing a healthy dose of righty power in the likes of Sosa and Pujols= possible disaster.

All of this is not to say the Cubs are chopped liver. I think the division race will be a close one down to the very end. I also think though, that these teams will have the best records in the NL, if not both leagues when it's all said and done. They may beat up on each other, along with the Cards, but that's all cancelled out by getting the Reds, Bucs, and Brewers in heavy rotation.

I don't think it's so much the M's and A's not getting much love, as it is the Angels taking it away from them. Those are two really good teams still, but the Angels just got scary good by picking up Vlad Guerrero, Jose Guillen, Bartolo Colon, and Kelvim Escobar.

BTW, is anyone else sick of the media constantly pulling for a Cubs - BoSox World Series? Somebody should tell them that wishing for it really hard and ramming it down our throats every chance they get won't make it happen. I hate the Yankees, but I couldn't have been happier when those two choked last year, out of spite for ESPN and Fox. I can really do without all of the Johnny Come Lately fans who always root for the loveable underdog - you know, like Gonzaga basketball fans.

I think Oakland deserves love, but the Mariners? Nah. This team is getting older and older, and making very few moves to improve themselves or even stem the decline. Lose Mike Cameron, replace him with Raul Ibanez? Carlos Guillen (basically) swapped for Rich Aurilla? Might help them a little bit, but it also makes them older(and thank goodness for them the Vizquel trade didn't go through--that would have been a disaster).

Oakland may have lost Tejada, but Bobby Crosby is going to be decent for them at shortstop. They also lost Foulke, but Arthur Rhodes is not a bad pitcher by any means. And they improved their offense in the areas other than Tejada by getting Kielty and Kotsay instead of Long. They have 3 front line starters, Mike Redman is a solid middle of the rotation guy, and Harden has lots of potential. I still see Oakland as the top team in this division, with Anaheim a very close second. I see Seattle as a distant third and Texas as possibly the worst non-scum team in the AL.
