MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

MLB is just a summer diversion, a place to turn when you're home and the game is on, unless you're a fan of a handful of teams. Sure, there are the occasional magical seasons but over time it'll always be the big teams with the deep pockets who have the edge. Fuck the Yankees, the Dodgers, the Red Sox, etc., and their fans.

Of course, if the NFL didn't have a salary cap I may feel a bit differently about teams with deep pockets. But they do, so how I may feel is irrelevant.

To me it gets back to the economics of baseball so I saw this article from FanGraphs and thought it appropriate in the general MLB thread.

Have Fans Been Conditioned to Accept Less?

They certainly have in Pittsburgh. Most of the marketing centers around PNC Park, post game concerts, fireworks nights, pup night, kids' days, t-shirts and bobbleheads...lots of bobbleheads. If the team happens to win more than they lose, that's cool, but most of us don't really expect it anymore.

We also know star players are going to be dealt sooner or later. No one is surprised Cutch got traded. We hoped he'd be an exception but deep down we knew it was coming. Business as usual in the Burgh. :ohbrother:

I’m surprised he lasted as long as he did.

Free agent signings this week:

OF Daniel Nava signed a minor league deal with the Pirates.
P Yu Darvish signed a 6 year $100+ million deal with the Cubs.

There's the NL Central in a nut shell. :ohbrother:
