Awesome. Thanks for the video (and the PM). I shall be celebrating the end of my finals/officially being a senior in college in five days with these little balls of love. Hopefully I can track down some sodium alginate and calcium chloride by then. :tongue2:

Did you use the same ratios as the guy in the video, just with whiskey instead of carrot juice?

Yes, and it made a lot. We probably could have halved that and been fine considering we used 12 year old Bushmills! OCBF can barely see to type!

As for finding the stuff, see a previous post regarding Le Sanctuaire.

OCBF wants me to add that if using alcohol for the liquid, instead of the carrot juice(or whatever), it has to be mixed not in a blender but in a pot on the stove under mild heat. Stir it constantly with a plastic spatula. The alginate will clump up but with the stirring it will break down and mix in. You don't want it to boil or simmer, so very low heat, just enough to get the alginate to mix in. Once it breaks down, the mix will begin to thicken, and end up like a honey almost. Pull it off, let it cool down. It will thicken some more but that's ok. It stayed liquid for us to be able to pull it into the syringe. Even 30 minutes later, after a couple of tries with the syringe it was still liquid enough to do what it was supposed to.

I think that the calcium chloride bath should probably be very cold or in a double bowl with the outer bowl being an ice bath. It will make the beads harden faster. I have to go buy a strainer too, like a tea strainer, not a slotted spoon.

Now that I have had some advil, a vitamin water and all that Jazz, I am ready to say that this idea rules.

And you called me MAD! "Whiskey balls in my beer? That sounds terrible, it wouldn't taste good."

Muuuahhhaaaahahahahaha! *Evil "its alive!" laugh*

Is it also on your registry?

My birthday is in June. Perhaps I can persuade someone to get it for me then.

The registry at one point DID include the newest (currently unreleased) season of House MD

I decided to ask people for those visa gift card things that are just as good as money and don't need to be spent in a particular store. And a window AC unit. Brick house - no AC. No thank you.
