Jury rules she was insane when she bludgeoned her 3 children

(CNN) -- A jury acquitted a Texas mother of killing two of her sons and seriously injuring the third after determining she was insane at the time.

As the verdicts were read, Deanna Laney's face quivered, but the 39-year-old shed no tears.

Laney would have received an automatic life sentence had she been convicted of capital murder.

Instead, she will immediately be taken for evaluation to a maximum security state psychiatric hospital, where she could stay as long as 40 years.

Laney admitted bashing her three children in the heads with rocks. She said God told her to do so.

Laney was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of 8-year-old Joshua and 6-year-old Luke, and a single count of injury to a child for 15-month old Aaron, who survived the attacks on Mother's Day 2003.

Prosecutor Matt Bingham has said Aaron's vision is impaired and he will never be able to live on his own.

Bingham chose not to seek the death penalty in the case.

"I don't think anybody in this room or anybody in that courtroom wasn't touched by the evidence in this case," the Smith County district attorney told reporters after the verdicts.

"For the rest of my life I'll remember Aaron, I'll remember Joshua, I'll remember Luke. I'll never forget what happened to them that day," he said.

Aaron, left, Luke and Joshua Laney are shown in this undated family photograph.
Laney's court-appointed attorney, Buck Files, said he felt a sense of relief.

"We have believed as strongly as we could believe that our client was insane at the time of the events," Files said.

Files said in court that Laney believed God had told her the world was going to end and "she had to get her house in order," which included killing her children.

"The dilemma she faced is a terrible one for a mother," Files told the jury. "Does she follow what she believes to be God's will, or does she turn her back on God?"

First off, the court appointed attorney's name is Buck Files. Sounds like a name from the porn name generator website.

It is very sad that she got off using the "God told me to do it" route.

Uh, guys, she didn't "get off". She's going "to a maximum security state psychiatric hospital, where she could stay as long as 40 years". The bitch is 39 years old, and she will most likely never see the free side of the fence alive again. Not a whole ot of difference between prison and state psycho ward. Maybe we'll all get lucky and a ward orderly will drug her up and abuse her for years on end. Karma is indeed a mother f*cker...

maybe an orderly...or inmate...with a bdsm/torture fetish at her sanitarium will get a call from god themselves....

edit: since my ex-wife is making my life hell....what if this were a man who said "god" told him to do thinks it would be front page national news and a death penalty....

you're wrong. It's very hard to convince a psychiatrist to release somebody who has committed a crime like this. A lot of times juries don't understand that...telling somebody they are not guilty b/c of insanity many times is just as good as giving them the chair. And it's easier on the conscience too.

DiHard: John Hinckley didn't kill anyone, let alone viciously beat his own children to death with rocks...huge difference.

The thing that pisses me off the most is the there are laws that prohibit you from committing crimes in the name of religion, and yet this cunt dodges the death penalty by doing just that, i.e., using her "belief in God" as an excuse. My saying that her "incarceration" in a mental institution is similar to being in prison doesn't mean that I think it is the correct verdict. I think the bitch should die, and die painfully.

good point about hinckley mili.....that wasnt a good comparison on my part......

is there a father in this whole scenario? and what are his thoughts......if hes a good father he should get the chance to beat her to death......

  11. People who openly admit to believing in some of these radical religions and even some of the more mainstream ones, should probably be classified as insane by that fact alone.
