Moving to South Carolina

I'm being relocated to South Carolina in the coming weeks. I can live pretty much wherever I want, but considering travel and other factors I've been told either Columbia or Greenville/Spartanburg. There is a really nice place in Loris, SC (we will be renting) but that is not real close to where I need to be.

I know there are several of you on here from SC, whats your opinions or advice?

My son relocated to the Charleston, SC area (from Columbus, OH) a few years ago and he loves it. He says: The weather is better, the people are friendlier, and the girls are prettier!

Greenville, Spartanburg, and Columbia are all comparable to Columbus...not overwhelmingly big but still enough metro.

Greenville and Spartanburg are known as Upstate...good high school sports, rabid fan followings, decently close to Charlotte, and closer to Clemson...but far from the coast.

Columbia is in the Midlands...centralized like Columbus so Myrtle, Charleston, Savannah, etc are not too bad of a drive. USC is in Columbia...good high school baseball, some football, and decent basketball.

If Charleston was on your list, it would be a no-brainer.

It appears that the cost of living in Greenville/Spartanburg is a little lower than Columbia. Do you have any information about Loris? It appears to be a really small town or more specifically Woodland Valley CC.

Charleston is amazing. Period.

Being upstate/near Charlotte is a plus - FWIW "Rockeel" is really "Rock Hill, SC. Took me a year to figure that one out.

Havent been to Columbia, but have heard good things. If you are anywhere near Columbia/Upstate, be sure to check out the Carolina Cup next spring.

That's all I've got.

Everyone has said this so far. What is so great about it. I am not being smart, I really have no idea. Other than coastal living...

Charleston is just a laid back, classical southern city...plenty to do, good people, rich history, and amazing food.

Loris is northeast of Myrtle Beach...very small country community near the NC border. 20 miles or so from the coast...

Ditto to what grad said - and just a great town with a cool historic downtown. Great food, great shops, great beaches close by. Very nice people. Tons of cute coeds, too (not sure if that helps or hurts your case).

If you can swing it, the Chuck is a great move. If not, you will at least be a reasonable drive away.
