Less than a month after entering the transfer portal, defensive back
Myles Sims has decided where the next steps of his career will take him, it just won't be in Ann Arbor. Sims took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce that he will transfer to his home state of Georgia to play for Georgia Tech.
Sims joins the Yellow Jacket program that has undergone some major changes during the offseason. He will play under new head coach
Geoff Collins and an overhauled staff after the retirement of former head coach
Paul Johnson after the season.
"Thank you to the University of Michigan for the invaluable academic and athletic experiences that will leave an indelible impression on my life," Sims tweet read. "I sincerely appreciate Coach Harbaugh and the football staff for the opportunity, professors for shaping my mind, incredible teammates for unbreakable bonds, friends and family for the unwavering support and dedicated fans who truly made my time at Michigan special. For personal reasons, my steps are being ordered closer to home where I will continue as a student-athlete at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Go Yellow Jackets!"
Sims transfers from the Wolverines' program after redshirting during his freshman season in 2018. It's unclear whether he will apply for a waiver for immediate eligibility. According to NCAA transfer rules, Sims must sit out the 2019 season and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
After not being mentioned much by the U-M coaching staff this spring, cornerbacks coach
Mike Zordich explained that the young Sims must show more consistency before being able to see the field.
"Myles, he’s just got to be more consistent," he said. "He put together a couple of nice practices, then he just kind of … he's just got to stay getting better every day. He's got the skill set, he has it. He’s just got to be consistent."
