NASCAR (Official Thread)

Still far more enjoyable to me than watching guys drive in a circle for 4 hours. I can actually watch F1.

NASCAR will race on COTA's 3.41-mile long course layout

Today's race wasn't a circle, it was a 3.41 mile road course, they raced at the COTA F1 track in Austin, TX. There was actually numerous leader changes, passing, and crashes. There was a whole lot more than just "one guy's pit crew couldn't get his left front tire off and he has to (DNF) the race, etc."

Decided to try to watch some NBA playoffs.

This Heat/Bucks game is fun.

Note that Giannis gagged some FTs that probably coulda put the game away, and then proceeds to play ole defense on Butler allowing him to tie the game.

After watching the (F1) Monaco Grand Prix this morning, I decided to try NASCAR this afternoon. It was fun too, and very rainy....

Not a big NASCAR guy, admittedly. But this guy is my favorite driver.

Dude needed to pass a few cars to make it into the playoff. So he decides to floor it on the back straight and ride the wall through turns 3/4 and then to the finish line. He literally floored it along the wall in the turn and passed the guys he needed to so he could be in the playoff.

This is what legends are made of. Hell yeah.

I rarely watch NASCAR, but this night race in the LA Coliseum is interesting. Such a small track the top speeds are in the 80s and lots of trading paint is going on. Looks like a battle of attrition as there have already been a couple of wrecks.

If Logano, Chastain, or Harvick win, I'll win too. Naturally, none are in the top 10 at the moment.

There was an accident late in the race yesterday that my dad was talking about. He said Kyle Larson was lucky to be alive. So I checked it out, and holy shit. Had the impact been on the driver's side, it could have been really bad.

They need to figure that out immediately. That being said, this article indicates that it might not have been as dangerous had it been on the driver's side. But the fact that it failed so badly is extremely concerning.

I'm not a big NASCAR watcher at all (usually will watch the Daytona 500), but I am interested in seeing the race in Chicago this weekend.

@ORD_Buckeye, has all the accommodations that have been set up for this event had any effect on traffic around your way? Or is your neighborhood far enough from all of it that it's not having an effect? I also wonder if the air quality with the Canadians fires will be problematic?

I'm 8 blocks (exactly one mile) north of the north end of Michigan Avenue. The river and beginning of the loop (where the race is) is another mile south. That's the thing about Chicago. You can have a quarter million people down there for Lollapalooza, the NFL draft or whatever, and two miles north, and I really won't notice. So, I don't expect any guys with mullets wearing cut-off jeans and mesh tank tops and carrying half killed suitcases of Busch to be walking stumbling down my street.

AQI this morning was down to 90 from 215 a couple of days ago, so it shouldn't affect things at all.

Definitely. I think Chicago is one of the best planned major cities in this country. Very well laid out. I was wondering if this event was a bit different since it seems that a good portion of actual street in the Loop would be used for this event, compared to other large crowd drawing events like festivals/drafts which are usually contained to a building or a fairgrounds.

Only difference is that a portion of Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue is closed, and that will create a traffic clusterfuck. I wouldn't think about driving downtown this weekend. I don't give a damn about NeckCar, but I hope this is being used as a test run to get an F1 race.

As for Chicago's layout, thank the Master Plan that was implemented after the fire. Sherman gave Atlanta the same opportunity, but they passed.

Sherman gave Atlanta the first chance, but they got a second chance in 1917
