    Even though they were before my time, I'd take Ray Nitschke or Jack Tatum. Not just because he was a Buckeye, but dude was just brutal, and Nitschke was a monster. Some of the stories in Lombardi's biography of that man are unreal.

    Now, what made me think of this thread was this hit...Steve Atwater on The Nigerian Nightmare. I still remember this hit from when I was in like seventh grade. For the youngsters, Okoye was a 260 pound RB who had a reputation as a bruiser and Atwater was a young 210 pound Free Safety. His body of work might not have been legendary, but DAMN...

    Tatum was a extremely hard hitter but he did what was common during the day, a forearm to the head. A man who gets a nickname as assasin and a book because of it, is a legend. But he wasn't mean.
    How about Jack Del Rio?
    Well anyone who wanted to be mean tried to emulate Butkus. Butkus was the begining. Butkus was the first player who was noted for just picking through the players until he found the one with the ball and left the rejects in "not as good condition" before they met him :tongue2: .

    I would have to go with Romanowski because in the show "60 Minutes", they had a special on him and he was absolutely nuts. He says when he got out on the field, he hated everyone. He hated their families and all their friends. He just went out there and literrally tried to hurt people. Hes one crazy football player.

    Don't forget Kevin Gogan, who had the SI article about him being a dirty player, and also Bill George and George Trafton were said to be terrors in the early days of the NFL...as was Bronko Nagurski.
