Barry Trotz resigns as Capitals head coach

Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz has tendered his resignation from the team, becoming a free agent after leading the franchise to its first Stanley Cup on June 7.

"After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I am officially announcing my resignation as Head Coach of the Washington Capitals," Trotz said in a statement Monday.

"When I came to Washington four years ago we had one goal in mind and that was to bring the Stanley Cup to the nation's capital. We had an incredible run this season culminating with our players and staff achieving our goal and sharing the excitement with our fans. I would like to thank Mr. [Ted] Leonsis, Dick Patrick and Brian MacLellan for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this great organization. I would also like to thank our players and staff who worked tirelessly every day to achieve our success," Trotz said.

"We are obviously disappointed by Barry's decision, but would like to thank Barry for all his efforts the past four years and for helping bring the Stanley Cup to Washington. Barry is a man of high character and integrity and we are grateful for his leadership and for all that he has done for our franchise," the Capitals said in a statement.

Well the NBA draft is now history, and if weren't awre of it the NHL draft starts tonight:

2018 NHL Draft
Round 1 | Fri, June 22 (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVAS)
Rounds 2-7 | Sat, June 23 (11 a.m. ET; NHLN, SN, TVAS)

American Airlines Center, Dallas TX

Barring some sort of trade, the Blue Jackets will select at #18, here's a few "mock draft" predictions:

18. Columbus Blue Jackets - Vitaly Kravstov, right wing (Chelyabinsk, KHL ): The 6-foot-2, 183-pound Kravstov really jumped up on scouts’ radars when he stepped up in the KHL playoffs with six goals and 11 points in 16 postseason games after a mostly non-descript rookie season. The skating, hands and willingness to play around the net are all there for Kravstov, who might not be far off from a look at the NHL level given the way he flashed in the KHL at the end of their season. Given the Russian forward’s all-around game, he would make a nice fit with a Blue Jackets outfit that’s always looking to get a little more explosive up front to go along with the rest of a pretty well-stocked roster.

18. Columbus Blue Jackets: LW K'Andre Miller, U.S. National Development Team

18. Columbus Blue Jackets: Jacob Olofsson, C, Timra IK (Allsvenskan)
The best rookie in Sweden’s top minor league has the size, speed and three-zone understanding to become an elite talent. Olofsson’s average play at several international events should not override what he did during league competition.

18. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS - Joel Farabee, LW, USNTDP: A gifted playmaker with a work ethic normally reserved for a lesser skilled individual.

Wayne Gretzky, in China, says NHL letting its stars play in Olympics is 'better for everyone'

The Great One has spoken on Gary Bettman's ban

For the first time in 20 years, the NHL didn't allow its players to play at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang in 2018. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, however, thinks that letting NHL players represent their respective countries is worth breaking up the NHLseason a bit -- and he said on Thursday in China that he wants NHL players in Beijing in 2022.

"I really think it's a real special stage. There's something really unique and special about playing for your country and there's nothing bigger than playing for your country in the Olympic Games," Gretzky told The Associated Press . Gretzky also said it's "always much better for everyone" if countries are fielding their best players.

Gretzky, who was an ambassador for Vancouver's winning Olympic bid in 2010, was speaking in China as the ambassador for the Kunlun Red Star, a Beijing-based team of the Russian Kontinental Hockey League.

The NHL hasn't addressed whether its policy this year will change for the 2022 Games, although the International Ice Hockey Federation has outright said that it would like the NHL back in the Olympics. Bettman has said it's "hard to envision" the NHL making a return to the world stage, but NHL players have pushed back against the rules.

Erik Karlsson goes to San Jose in a big trade

https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/erik-karlsson-trade-ottawa-senators-san-jose-sharks-1.4822421

The Erik Karlsson era is over in Ottawa.

The Senators traded the star defenceman to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, just one day before Ottawa hits the ice for training camp.

The Senators dealt Karlsson and prospect forward Francis Perron to the Sharks. Ottawa gets forwards Chris Tierney and Rudolfs Balcers, defenceman Dylan DeMelo, prospect forward Josh Norris and two conditional draft picks. If San Jose re-signs Karlsson, Ottawa receives a conditional 2021 second-round selection — or a first-round pick (not lottery protected) if the Sharks reach the Stanley Cup final in 2019.
