Capitals forwards Andre Burakovsky and Alex Ovechkin have atouchy feely relationship, including a warmup tradition that features aggressive collar-grabbing and yelling.

Wednesday, we learned that the two players’ pregame routine gets even more bizarre than this. In an interview with the NHLPA, Burakovsky said that his strangest gameday superstition
is Alex Ovechkin “biting me before every game.”

NHL expansion news.....

Construction delays could push Seattle NHL expansion back 1 year, league says

Seattle may have to wait an extra year for the National Hockey League. An article published by the NHL on Monday casts doubt on whether KeyArena will be ready for hockey for the 2020 season and the league apparently does not want to start the season in an alternate arena.

"They've mentioned that possibility, but I don't think that's an ideal way to bring in an expansion franchise by playing in an alternate venue for any period of time, really," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in the article. "We'll see how that plays out. I know they have an interest in starting in '20-21 and we'd like the accommodate them any way we can."

The league's Board of Governors will meet Dec. 3-4 in Sea Island, Georgia. Daly expects the board to make a final decision on Seattle.

Europe ‘sooner rather than later’

League deputy commissioner in favour of introducing a whole new division.

Both the National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) have said it is inevitable that Europe will get an expansion franchise.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said earlier this week that he hopes to see a new team outside of North America sooner rather than later, although stressed that was a personal rather than organisational opinion.

It comes in the wake of recent utterances from NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly regarding the inevitability of a European expansion.

“I think it would be a real positive statement to create the first really trans-ocean league,” Fehr said on Monday. “I think it would be an extraordinary achievement for everybody.”

Speaking at Prime Time Sports & Entertainment’s annual sports-management conference in Toronto on Monday, Daly once again repeated his stance on the matter. He said a European expansion will happen “in the short- to medium-term but with continued growth in the sport, franchises in Europe at some point are probably inevitable.”

Previously Daly has been on the record saying that the only way an expansion can work is if an entire division of teams, probably a minimum of four, is added.

Fehr, speaking at the same event, added: “I think the sooner the better, provided it can be done right. You don’t want to rush it.

“You don’t want to do it before the capital is committed, the schedule is worked out, all the rest of it.”

The candidate cities reportedly include Stockholm, Helsinki, Moscow, Prague, London, Zurich and Berlin. This would allow North American-based teams to travel to Europe no more than once or twice a season and play four or five games on each trip.
