New Jersey Devils' Ilya Kovalchuk announces retirement - NHL.com
NEWARK, N.J. ? Today, New Jersey Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk announced his retirement from the National Hockey League.

Statement from New Jersey Devils President/CEO/General Manager Lou Lamoriello:

"After many conversations with Ilya over the past year on his desire to retire from the National Hockey League, Ilya?s decision became official today. On behalf of the entire organization, I wish Ilya and his family all the best in their future endeavors."
Statement from Ilya Kovalchuk:

"This decision was something I have thought about for a long time going back to the lockout and spending the year in Russia. Though I decided to return this past season, Lou was aware of my desire to go back home and have my family there with me. The most difficult thing for me is to leave the New Jersey Devils, a great organization that I have a lot of respect for, and our fans that have been great to me."

NHL, NHLPA reach agreement with IIHF and IOC for player participation in Sochi - NHL.com
NEW YORK/TORONTO -- The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that an agreement has been reached with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to secure participation of NHL players in the upcoming 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
About time. Really liking our chances next year. Our team should be much better this time around, with a lot of great talent, but much of it is of the younger version. Been looking at possible rosters & I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux has surgery after golf injury - NHL.com
Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux will need 5-6 weeks of recovery after surgery Thursday on his right index finger. According to the team, Giroux was injured while playing golf in Ottawa.
"Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger," general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement. "Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks."
A little late to the party as this happened last week, but the last thing Flyers fans needed to hear after last season. Regular season starts on October 1st, exactly six weeks from today, so it sounds like he'll be out all preseason unless he recovers quicker than originally expected.

Winter Classic turned $20M profit

Why are we seeing the proliferation of outdoor NHL attractions? The 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic not only generated the largest attendance and broadcast viewership for a regular-season game in league history, it also made a profit of more than $20 million. According to an NHL source, the Jan. 1 game at Michigan Stadium posted more than $30 million in revenue against costs of $10 million. Approximately two-thirds of the revenue was derived from ticket sales. ... An additional $10 million in revenue came from retail and advertising sales. A specific breakdown of those categories was unavailable. As a point of comparison for those numbers: The previous Winter Classic, the 2012 edition at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, is believed to have made $15 million in revenue against costs of $10 million.

The NHL is finally starting to recover - in part because the NBA has finally been exposed as a group of whiny, overpaid bitches who tank when they aren't any good instead of fighting every night to try to win.

I wonder how the evil elf Buttman will fuck it up. He's been the NBA's best employee since 1992.

Re: Of the $10 million cost to produce the event, $3 million was paid to the University of Michigan to rent Michigan Stadium for four weeks.

The only negative thing (from an Ohio State perspective) about the Winter Classic.

Just sayin': Maybe the Blue Jackets (and Ohio State) should look into getting the Winter Classic in some future year.

In the first two seconds of last night's CGY-VAN game:
20 penalties, 142 penalty minutes, and 7 ejections. Tortorella had to be restrained from going in the Flames locker room during the first intermission. The only thing missing was the goalies meeting at center ice to join the fray.
