National Signing Day 2016: 4-star CB Wayne Davis signs with Ohio State

The four-star cornerback puts ink to paper.
Nearly eight months after verbally committing to the Buckeyes over reported scholarship offers from programs such as Virginia Tech, Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State, and Maryland, four-star standout Wayne Davis is officially an Ohio State student-athlete. Signing his national letter of intent with OSU this morning, Davis will soon join former Lake Taylor (VA) teammate and current Ohio State defensive end Jalyn Holmes as a member of the Silver Bullet defense.
Davis isn't just one of the most sought-after prospects in the state of Virginia, but the entire country. Per the 247Sports Composite, the 5'11, 190-pound future Buckeye ranks as the 33rd cornerback and 328th overall prospect in the 2016 class. Although listed as a cornerback by many, Wayne definitely displays the skill set to also play safety on the next level.
Already used to lining up in a number of different ways, Davis was a massive part of Lake Taylor's success on the field last season. Seeing action on defense, offense, and special teams, he helped lead the Titans to an overall record of 14-1, and nearly a state title. Named Virginia's Gatorade Player of the Year, Davis returned five of his six interceptions for touchdowns, while accounting for well over 600 receiving yards, and six scores as a wideout.
Even though Urban Meyer isn't known for playing many true freshmen off the rip, the Buckeyes are looking to stack the depth chart with new faces next season. With playing time up for grabs, Davis will have an opportunity to earn first year burn during camp. If not, look for him to follow the long line of Ohio State standouts to redshirt during their first year in Columbus.

"The Norfolk, Virginia product is a physical football player. He possesses good size at 5’11, 187 pounds and he dished out the majority of the contact when he played both wide receiver and cornerback in high school. Davis will be playing cornerback at Ohio State, but he dished out a devastating stiff-arm with the ball in his hands.
As a cornerback, Davis is a perfect scheme fit for Ohio State’s physical press coverage technique. Davis’ mix of strength, athleticism and physicality allows him to play great man coverage. Additionally, he shows off great ball skills and is a big play waiting to happen.
Davis is sort of a hidden gem, as he is only the 247Sports Composite 33rd best cornerback in the nation, yet he has the ability to man up on an island on the outside. It is unlikely that he will crack the two-deep in year one or two, but Davis has the skillset to eventually make some noise." -Christopher Jason
