Game Thread Navy 27, at tOSU 31 (Sep 5th, ESPN)

Another thing I came away with this game is that Rolle is going to be one heck of a player for us. His speed for a middle linebacker will be something I don't know if we've ever had? I thought he was very active all game long, and Also Nate Williams played a good game as well. Robert Rose looks in better shape then he ever has as well.

I'm just a bit surprised (hate to harp on a negative aspect) at how flat we were in the second half. This is a young team that wants to be the champs, wants to prove everyone wrong, hasn't played in 9 months, and is playing a good opponent and it looked like we let the foot off the gas peddle completely at halftime.

Also taking Pryor out and inserting Bauserman shouldn't have happened while in the first half. This is a QB that needs all the reps he can get before next week, and I felt that when they did that it took the offense out of rythem

Not sure if you're aware, but I think Jax's point still stands...appalled that they couldn't knock Navy back for 2 yards...in TWO plays. I would agree that line play wasn't what I had hoped for.

Pretty sure it was 3 plays? I think it was 2nd and 2, 3rd and 2, then 4th and 2, with identical plays being ran all 3 times. I 100% agree, we should have gone for it but not with a play that failed the first two times.

Quick thoughts on the game from the perspective of only seeing it once, plus reading the box score. Pleasantly surprised to see Saine get as many touches as he did, and perform well. Watching it live, it seemed that Saine got more carries than Boom, but the box says otherwise. Regardless, it looks like we have a #1 and #1A RB this season. Like Saine getting passes out of the backfield. Was also pleased by the number of screen and flat RB passes. Where was that during the Mo Wells years?

Pryor looked good, but I still think he needs to make reads quicker. There were a couple of plays where he was lucky not to get picked off because of a late throw. On certain routes, the ball needs to be in the air before the WR make his cut, otherwise the DB has a chance to break on the ball. I'm sure he'll see it in the film room this week. TP was definitely limited by the play calling this game, it was almost like a scrimmage for him. I expect that the coaches will loosen the reins for USC, and let him use all of his tools. His INT was nothing to worry about, went thru the WR's hands, defender was in the right place.

Regarding the 4th and 2 play, I thought they should have taken the points, but if they are going to go for it, they should put it in TP's hands. Give him an option pitch, a couple of WR routes, and let him decide to keep it or not. I'm sure he could have picked up the 1st, had the hand-off not been called.

Defense looked good, all things considered. A couple of costly miscues, but the trip option lived up to it's billing. Not only does Navy run a specialized offense that's hard to defend, but they run it better than anyone else at this point in time. I was very impressed with their execution, and Dobbs in particular. One thing about the trip option, when there is a missed assignment, everyone around the play is engaged with a blocker. That's why there were big plays, it's hard to get help on D. Coleman played his ass off, and while I don't think he will be that effective every week, he looks like the kind of leader that will make big plays when we need it. Also impressed by Rolle. There were plays where it looked like he was shot out of a cannon towards the ball carrier. Some plays he wasn't as effective, but a good showing for his first start. The middle of the line and pass coverage were suspect at times, but I chalk that up to defending the option as well. As someone alluded to earlier, holding Navy to under 200 rushing yds is no small feat. Add in that they changed their stripes quite a bit by passing more, and it was a tough task for our D.

The O-line was not as good as I had hoped, but not bad. IIRC, the times that TP was pressured had more to do with RBs or TEs missing their blitz pickups, but I may be wrong. Would have definitely liked to see better run blocking.

Overall, we were a couple of somewhat flukey plays from a solid win. Add in that Tressel had no intention of running it up on an academy, and the limited offensive playbook; and it was nothing to worry about. A friend who was at the game told me that there were only six offensive plays run by us all game. That doesn't ring true for me, but there is definitely not a lot for USC to look at for next week. Personally, I like that the team will be going into this week thinking that they have a lot to work on. In the end, it goes in the win column, and that's all that matters until kickoff on 9/12.

Even though we were impressed with our boys holding Navy to low offensive number, ESPN wasn't impressed:

BCS Bowl Predictions after Week 1

Capital One
(SEC vs. Big Ten)
Mississippi vs. Ohio State

In the preseason, just a week or two ago, he had us in the Rose vs USC. He now has the Rose set up with Penn St instead. Also, apparently Boise St looked so awesome that they are pegged to still be a BCS game. :roll1:

Couldn't agree more. I questioned the decision as it was happening....especially since we were only up by 10 at that point and by no way had the game wrapped up.

Which begs the question: Where would this team be without Pryor? There's a question to get you reaching for the Prilosec.

Navy averaged 292 ypg running the ball last year. Lot of people are overlooking that.

I've seen some posts to this effect on several of the recent pages. All I can do is laugh. We Buckeye fans chuckled HEARTILY when ND lost to Navy and tossed ND aside like the losers they are...then we make excuses when Navy gave us a run for the money.

I still have hopes for next week, but it's clear that there is A LOT of improvement necessary for this team to achieve their goals. There were some real bright spots to be sure, but the lines were not among them and this trend must be more frustrating for the staff than any of us here....and we're plenty frustrated...

What separates the top teams? Coaching? Schedule? Talent?
I would argue that the difference is at QB. Outside of 2002, when we have been really elite, we have had a great QB. A difference maker.
TP is that. Tress needs to set him free!

You're right on the money here. The QB! But JT has to have complete trust in that QB to turn him loose. Problem here is that JT doesn't have an amazing defense this year to fall back on in the event that he doesn't fully trust in his young QB yet. So really, he has no choice but to free TP and see how far it takes us.

We need to put points on the board...period. I don't think this defense is going to lead the nation in points allowed this year...just too many weak spots. I really think that to win ball games this year, we're going to have to outgun some teams and put up some serious points.

TP might have some growing pains, but I think by the end of the season, he's going to be in that zone, leading into an amazing run next year. Not that I'm writing off this year, but I just think (like most it seems) that we are one year away from being really special.
