NBA Basketball on the rise??

crazybuckfan40

Head Coach
Just curious what some of you guys think...

I know there are some on here that aren't fans of the NBA...For whatever reasons...

Many have used reasons along the lines of no defense, bad style basketball, league of thugs, etc...

But just after seeing this weekend and really here people talk about it the way that they did...

Also to see guys in the rookie/sophomore challenge that aren't all right out of high school that you can put with a team in college, doesn't seem to be as much based on potential in the top of the draft as used to be...Brandon Roy, Kevin Durant, and Al Horford are examples here...Roy is ready to take over a franchise because of gaining more maturity in college IMO...Durant is struggling some in Seattle to get recognition, but another good player or two and if Seattle moves cities he will have that team on the up swing as well...Same with Horford in the Atlanta...No one really talks about him, but kid can play, and should be up for Rookie of the year, but those are guys that many watched last year in college and saw what they could do and have interest in watching in the pros...

Also seems to be more superstars...LBJ, Dwight Howard, DWade, Chris Paul, are guys that are young superstars that many in those cities are standing behind...

This is not mentioning guys that have been faces of the league for a while now and are still playing at a high level...Kobe, Dirk, Nash, Garnett, AI, Rip, Chauncey, Yao, Duncan, Parker, etc...

Also Boston being back is helping as well, and I think that if the Knicks were ever to return it would only help as well...

Just some thoughts I thought I would throw out there after the weekend, curious to hear some thoughts...

I admit to being a bandwagon Cavs fan because of Lebron and the fact that they are good now. As long as Lebron stays a Cav for his entire career I will probably always be a Cavs fan from here on out, but judging by my Browns and Indians fandom I won't watch them as much when they aren't good, but back to one of my other threads this is a great time to be a Cleveland sports fan.

I think so.

Baseball is on the fall. Mitchell report destroyed that sport, as if it hadn't taken a hit already.

Football is also on the decline. Until the Pats and Colts slow down, nobody wants to see two teams dominate as the Sox/Yanks. Plus, the dynasty of this era, is coming to a halt, and I think, the least that should happen is the losers vs. the Pats (Rams, Panthers, Eagles) should atleast get a share of the titles.

Hockey is going down even farther, as before the strike they had gained popularity, but unfortunently the strike ruined that.

Basketball however, is making new things happen, and even perhaps adding a Europeon division to make things so much more interesting.

I agree with everything here, besides football on the decline, but wanted to comment on the last thing about Europeon division...

I think in theory that could be a good idea, especially with lots of the best players from over there coming over here to play anyway...

But what do you do when guys will refuse to go across seas to play...Guys willingly come over here to play...Also what about the fan base over there...What about travel...Lots of questions that would have to be answered for that to happen...

Basketball is a game were you're not going to the get a call in the final minute that you would with nine minutes left in the game. Case in point the Georgetown-Villanova game. The general populace gets upset about that call and rightly so. That happens in the NBA on a nightly basis with stars. Dwayne Wade is getting a different called for him than Jason Kapano. I'm not saying DWade isn't good but in the NBA you get officiated on your stature and value to the league. Wade, Melo and Lebron are getting a whole different game from the refs than Shannon Brown, Devin Brown or Daquan Cook.

You have the greatest scandal that's treated like a non-scandal in American sports history. Tim Donaghy.

Stern said an internal review had found that all of the league's 56 referees violated the contractual prohibition against engaging in gambling, with more than half of them admitting to placing wagers in casinos. But Stern said none of the violations was major, and no referees had admitted to wagering in a sports book or with a bookie.

:roll2:

The reffing in the NBA is more crooked than F1 track.

The ridiculous dress code which keeps corporate ticket buyers at ease because black men with tatoos in baggy jeans and sideways hats makes them uncomfortable.

attendance has been at records amounts of total attendance the past 3 years, the nba is on track to beat last year and hit about 22m. buildings are supposedly 92.3 full a night. though, no team averages greater than 95% on the road.

i do know that 7 nba buildings have a percentage of capacity less than the lowest in the nhl. and that columbus which is 79.8%.

on the question, i dont know. what is "on the rise" back to bird v magic days? no. the sport has always been a second tier pro sport, with the exception of maybe 15 years.

i mean baseball attendance is it at nearly 80m, with solid growth each of the last 4 years. the same can be said for post lock out hockey, the nba, is it just the one sport with increasing attendance or something we are seeing across the board.

i know where you are comming from, lots of nba talk lately and the talk during the all star game. the slam dunk comp is back and yah de dah, where are you hearing that? espn and tnt, the two networks that have the majority of the rights to the league....

Curious is where you got the stats from in terms of percentage of fill...Would like to take a look at them...

But even ESPN who has the rights hasn't been pushing the NBA that hard...Have heard guys that say they are just playoff fans, saying that they are taking more of a liking to regular season games...

I just think that go back a couple years ago with the fights, and brawls that the NBA has gotten past that and is back on track and I feel that there is just more excitement as a whole...

The only legitimate problem with the NBA right now is the officiating. It's still terrible.

Interesting you say that. I was just talking to my friend the other night that is on the Utah Jazz staff. He was telling me how it's become really evident that basketball refs are influenced by the league. Every game in Utah, the fans are getting upset with bad calls...literally 6 or 7 a night. Boozer never got into foul trouble...now he's all of a sudden racking up fouls. Their conspiracy theory is that the leauge doesn't want to see a small market team be successful and ref their games with their own agenda.

I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories. I just think that NBA officials aren't on top of the action like they are supposed to be. On at least 25% of calls a night, they are flat out guessing. The game is simply too fast for them.

If that were the case the Spurs would never get a call because the NBA has to hate them in the Finals. SA might be a big market, but nobody outside of Texas wants to see them. The Cavs on the other hand aren't a large market, but are a team that will bring in viewers because of Lebron. I bet a Cleveland/LA Finals would get decent ratings. Of course the Cavs get screwed over the way your friend claims the Jazz are most of the time. As far as Boozer is concerned karma is a bitch.
