Pioneer Press - Mike James and the Timberwolves met twice on Thursday. The former Raptors guard has met with Kevin McHale, Jim Stack, Rob Babcock and owner Glen Taylor.

"Minnesota is definitely one of my top (choices)," James said. "They have one of the best players in the NBA in Kevin Garnett. I've been a fan of Kevin since I've been in the game. It would be an honor for me to play with somebody like that, because I think he thinks like me as far as how I approach the game, and he would bring out the best in me."

Houston and Dallas are also in the running for the guard.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bulls could use another big body. And according to team sources, the Sun-Times writes, the next name on Paxson's wish list is restricted free agent Chris Wilcox, a 6-10 power forward.

Since the Ben Wallace signing will eat up most of the Bulls' $16 million of cap space, their best chance of landing Wilcox will be through a sign-and-trade deal with his current team, the Seattle SuperSonics . That's always a tricky situation when the current team wants to retain the player, but the Bulls could benefit from the Sonics' shaky financial outlook.

Wilcox, who will turn 24 in September, is looking for a multiyear deal at roughly $10 million a year.

It's doubtful the Bulls would be willing to pay that kind of money as well, but they are in a better position to meet Wilcox's salary demands. The Bulls also have the kind of young talent to entice Seattle into making a deal.

J.R. Smith, a 6-6 guard who is also part of the Chandler deal, is very attractive because of his youth (he turns 21 in September), and Malik Allen and Viktor Khryapa are other players who could be included in a trade.

Even if they don't acquire Wilcox, a trade seems likely because the Bulls have too many players worthy of playing time. Brown, though, believes the Bulls have big plans for him.

''I don't think they're bringing me there to just let my contract expire,'' P.J. Brown told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. ''I think they want me to definitely help get this team to the next level. With the acquisition of Ben, you see how committed they are toward winning.''

The pair crossed paths again Sunday at a summer league game. So how are things going?

The Celtics would have to be insane, and delusional to go through with a trade for Iverson.

Personally, I think that Gerald Green is going to be a player like Tracy McGrady, and could be better, if he stays healthy; something T-Mac can't seem to do.

Iverson's a good ball player, but no way in hell do I go through with that trade, especially for a guy that can play in the NBA for 15-20 seasons, with a great deal of upside and potential.

Why not put Pierce and AI on the same court and see what they can do. If nothing else ticket sales should go through the roof and with two all stars they should be able to make some noise.

Wallace_Ben_det.jpg
Press Release - The Chicago Bulls announced this afternoon the team has signed free agent forward Ben Wallace to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are thrilled that Ben is now officially a Bull. His track record speaks for itself and he brings us a tremendous presence on the basketball floor,” said Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations John Paxson. “We believe that Ben fits with our young players and that he will have a tremendous impact on and off the court, providing toughness and leadership.”

The 6-9, 240-pound Wallace started all 82 games last year for Detroit, as well as all 18 playoff games. On the year, he averaged 7.3 ppg, 11.3 rpg (4th in the NBA), 3.7 orpg (1st), 2.21 bpg (9th), a career-best 1.78 spg (10th) and 1.9 apg in 35.2 mpg. He led the Pistons in rebounds in 59 games (50-9), recorded more blocked shots than the opposing team in 22 games (19-3) and posted 17 double-doubles (16-1). In recognition of his play, he was named an NBA All-Star for the fourth consecutive year and he earned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award for the second year in a row and fourth time in five seasons (2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006).

“He continues to be one of the best defenders and rebounders in the game today, and his work ethic fits that of our coach, Scott Skiles,” added Paxson. “He knows what it takes to win and we're confident that he will come in and make an immediate impact on the Bulls organization. We feel very fortunate to be able to add Ben Wallace today."

A First Team member of the NBA All-Defensive Team fives years running, Wallace has earned All-NBA Second Team honors in 2003, 2004 and 2006 and All-NBA Third Team honors in 2002 and 2005. In his 10 years in the NBA, he has appeared in 698 regular season games (583 starts), and yielded career averages of 6.6 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.3 orpg, 2.29 bpg (17th in the NBA all-time), 1.34 spg and 1.3 apg in 31.1 mpg.

Wallace, 31, helped lead his team to the postseason each of the last five years, and reached the Eastern Conference Finals the last four years, including back-to-back trips to the NBA Finals in 2004 and 2005, culminated with Detroit winning the NBA Championship in 2004. In that time, he has played in 93 playoff games, all starts, and averaged 8.5 ppg, 13.3 rpg, 4.1 orpg, 2.31 bpg, 1.85 spg and 1.5 apg in 39.5 mpg.

He went undrafted following his senior season at Virginia Union in 1996, before signing with the Washington Bullets on Oct. 2, 1996. Following three seasons in Washington, on Aug. 11, 1999, Wallace was traded with forward/center Terry Davis, guard Tim Legler and guard Jeff McInnis to Orlando in exchange for center Isaac Austin. He spent one year with the Magic, before he and guard Chucky Atkins were sent to Detroit on Aug. 3, 2000, for forward Grant Hill.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Sports Illustrated - Mike James has finally got the security he has been craving for, signing a four year, $23 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves Thursday.

James was being chased by multiple teams, including Dallas and Houston, before coming to terms with the Wolves.

The clinching call may have come Tuesday morning, when former MVP Kevin Garnett called just before leaving for a trip to China.

"It just made me feel good that someone with high standards and he's so respected in this game," James said. "And for him to call little old Mike James, it made me feel good. It made me feel that much more appreciated." </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Stoudamire_Salim_atl.jpg
Atlanta Journal-Constitution - Some people take losses hard. Salim Stoudamire takes them a little further.

"Honestly, there were days when I wanted to come up in here and fight somebody because we were losing so much," Stoudamire said. "That's just me being competitive and wanting to win."

It didn't help that the Hawks only won 26 games during his rookie season. Now, in the summer after his first professional season, the 23-year-old says he has changed.

"I realized my demeanor did affect the players around me," Stoudamire said. "If I'm positive, it's going to wear off on other people, and if I'm looking like I'm not then they're going to get a sense that I'm not happy. I sat back this summer and thought about that, and now I have a different approach."

It was Stoudamire's attitude which caused his stock to drop in last year's draft, although the Hawks admit they tried trading up to secure him before he fell to them at pick 31.

"We tried to trade up to get him," Hawks general manager, Billy Knight said after the draft. "We really feel he was the best shooter in college basketball. Anywhere on the floor he's a threat, and he'll bring that element to our team. He hit so many game-winning shots for his college team, so we know he'll take those shots."</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Thomas_Isiah_nyk.jpg
Larry Coon FAQ - According to Larry Coon in his 'Salary Cap FAQ,' six teams were forced to pay the luxury tax for the 2005-2006 season. The tax level was set at $61.7 million and listed below are the clubs that went over and the amount which is owed.

New York Knicks : $37.2 million
Dallas Mavericks : $17.3 million
Orlando Magic : $7.8 million
Indiana Pacers : $4.7 million
Memphis Grizzlies : $3.7 million
San Antonio Spurs : $.9 million

The tax level for the 2006-2007 season, according to a NBA Press Release, will be $65.42 million.

Coon helped round out the luxury tax picture with the following comments:

"I don't expect any non-taxpaying teams to become taxpayers, and most of the teams who paid tax this year have enough flexibility to get under the tax level for next year, except New York and probably Dallas. It seems most teams are making a pretty conscientious effort to stay under the tax level, so I can easily see just those two teams paying tax next year."

When asked if any of the clubs on the list were surprsing, Coon replied, "The new CBA took out a lot of the uncertainty that could have led to surprises, by setting the tax level in advance of the season. Teams no longer need to project where they think the tax level will fall -- they now know exactly where they need to be. In addition, last year's amnesty provision allowed teams to cut expensive players and reduce their tax profile. As a result, there were no real surprises this year."

The one-time amnesty clause helped both the Knicks and Mavericks.

"The Mavs would have owed another $15.9 million; the Knicks another $6.6 million, but without the amnesty provision they might not have made the same decisions about the rest of their rosters, so you can't exactly say that they saved that much." said Coon. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Press Release - The Phoenix Suns today signed unrestricted free agent guard/forward Eric Piatkowski to a two-year contract.

A 12-year NBA veteran, Piatkowski joins his fourth NBA team (L.A. Clippers, Houston, Chicago) and has averaged 7.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 18.9 minutes in 762 career games.

“We’re happy to have added experience and one of the NBA’s best shooters to our team as we pursue the goal of winning an NBA championship,” Suns Head Coach and Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Mike D’Antoni said.

The 6-7, 215-pound swingman has consistently ranked as one of the top three-point shooters in the NBA, owning a .399 career three-point percentage, which is tied for eighth-best among all active NBA players. Suns guard Steve Nash and Bulls guard Ben Gordon lead all active players with a .421 three-point percentage. “The Polish Rifle” has shot 40 percent or better from long distance five times, including a career-best .466 (3rd in the NBA) in 2001-02 with the Clippers.

The 35-year-old played in a career-low 29 games in 2005-06, averaging 2.0 points and 0.8 rebounds in 7.9 minutes in his second season in Chicago.

The former 15th pick overall in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers , was traded on draft night to the Clippers, where he played his first nine seasons. Piatkowski still owns the L.A. Clippers franchise record for most three-point field goals made (738), attempted (1,835), as well as three-point percentage (.402).

Piatkowski, who finished his college career as the only player in Nebraska school history with 1,000 points (1,934), 600 rebounds (669) and 300 assists (322), recently became only the third player in Cornhusker men’s basketball history to have his jersey No. 52 retired on Feb. 18, 2006.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Mercury News - The 76ers have been spending the better part of the summer trading Allen Iverson, but the former MVP wants to remain in Philadelphia, with a catch.

"I want to be a Sixer, I have said that since Day 1," Iverson said at a news conference to promote his annual charity softball event. "But if I am not wanted, then I definitely don't want to be a Sixer and I am willing to start my career all over."

"It's a business. I have some value," Iverson said. "We didn't make the playoffs last year, and when something like that happens, you feel like you got to do something. I don't know why it has to be me, but I guess I have that type of value.

"It's just tough everywhere you go, no matter where in the world, people ask you that same question. I am used to it, but I am also tired of it. Sometimes I even think leaving might not be such a bad thing because I might not have to deal with this every summer. Indianapolis Star - The Pacers gained a valuable trade exception worth $7.5 million from the Hornets in exchange for Peja Stojakovic.

"It's a great thing to have," Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said Thursday. "Everybody in the league knows we have it now and knows what it could mean."

Walsh credited senior vice president David Morway for arranging the deal.

The Hornets agreed to the arrangement because the Pacers added an undisclosed amount of money to the trade.

Along with the exception, the Pacers acquired the draft rights to 7-1 British center Andrew Betts, a second-round draft pick of the Hornets in 1998.

This move could make trading for Al Harrington far easier for the Pacers. The Pacers could use the trade exception to land Harrington by trading a future draft pick and/or cash along with the exception.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

http://hoopshype.com/

Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry has been on the prowl for a veteran guard.

Sources say the Cavaliers are close to signing veteran David Wesley.
Wesley, who will be 36 on Nov. 14, could be signed with part of the Cavaliers' mid-level exception or possibly the bi-annual exception ($1.8 million).

He played 71 games last year for Houston, including 59 starts. He averaged 9.9 points, 2.9 assists and 2.5 rebounds.

The 2006-07 season will be his 14th in the NBA. Wesley has averaged 12.9 points, 4.5 assists and 2.1 rebounds in his career. He's a 42.5 percent career shooter, including 37 percent from the 3-point line.

If he's added, the Cavaliers would be overloaded at guard, especially after drafting Shannon Brown of Michigan State in the first round and Daniel Gibson of Texas in the second. Other guards on the roster are starters Eric Snow and Larry Hughes and backup point guard Damon Jones, whose name has surfaced in trade talks.

Unless things turn around quickly, Drew Gooden could be playing for another team next year.

Talks between his agent, Calvin Andrews, and the Cavaliers have started to break down.''We're trying to see if any sign-and-trades work,'' Andrews said. ''We are trying to exhaust every avenue. We're working through some different things.''

The Cavaliers told Andrews to be patient while they were working on LeBron James' three-year contract extension. Now, it's Gooden's turn, and apparently he's the main focus of their attention.

The 6-foot-10, 242-pounder is a restricted free agent. He wants to remain in Cleveland. Andrews said a sign-and-trade might be the answer.

''I think it's a very feasible route,'' he said.

Of course, all would be well in Gooden's world if the Cavaliers make an offer to his liking, but that's not been the case.

''They have not made an offer yet,'' Andrews said. ''Maybe they are holding out on something. We're being patient and working with them. We respect what they're trying to do. We'll follow their lead.

''They can make an offer he likes. That's what he would prefer. Drew wants to stay in Cleveland. If they make an offer that makes sense, we'll do it. If a sign-and-trade makes more sense, we'll do that. We're not ready to hit the panic button.''

The few teams that have money remaining don't have a crying need for a power forward. He might have to take a mid-level offer (starting at $5.2 million) or accept the Cavaliers' qualifying offer ($5.4 million) and become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Andrews said earlier that taking the qualifying offer will be their last resort.

Alot of Cavs rumors today! I'm not really interested in Wesley unless we indeed unload DJ/Sasha/Luke/Ira. But, it'd be a solid pickup with the BAE. I'd like to bring in Banks to replace Snow at the starting PG, and it looks like we will end up signing him.

While the Kings still can offer their mid-level exception ($5.2 million), they would prefer to avoid paying the luxury tax.

Wells is the team's top priority, meaning others must wait. Among them is former Kings forward Darius Songaila, a Chicago restricted free agent who is not expected to receive an offer from the Bulls.

According to several sources, Brown was calling Balkman "a potential steal" weeks before the draft.

While he was still employed by the Knicks, Brown was responsible for running Balkman's workout. He also scouted him extensively during the Orlando pre-draft camp.

"There were five players that figured to be available late in the first round that Larry really liked," says one Knicks source. "I don't know if Larry would have taken him as high as 20 but he always liked Balkman."

Brown, according to the source, told several of his close associates around the league to consider Balkman. Although Brown and Thomas disagreed on everything last season, they shared the same opinion on a raw forward with loads of athleticism and limited offensive skills. When reached at his East Hampton home, Brown declined to comment on the Knicks.

"It is rare when you find guys who can have an effect on the game without having to call plays for them," Thomas says. "Those guys have a way of asserting themselves on the defensive end. They do all the things that don't show up on the stat sheet."</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Gooden thinks hes going to get anything close to 6 years for 60 million?

Thats fucking crazy.

Yeah, his agent thinks he can get it because Nene got that deal. So blame Nene for this. What a joke...it says Cavs want a $6 a year, which sounds about right.

Why are we signing another old guard???

This just means we are definatley trading DJ, and probobly Luke/Ira. I think Sasha will stay, seeing as how he hired a personal coach and is practicing 4 hours a day at the Q.

If we sign Wesley then consider DJ outta here.

Songaila_Darius_chi.jpg
Washington Post - Bulls free agent Darius Songaila has agreed to a five year, $21 million deal with the Washington Wizards , the Washington Post is reporting. Songaila had previously been waiting for the Sacramento Kings to tie up loose ends with free agent Bonzi Wells to see if there was a chance he could return to the Kings.

The Wizards were interested in Songaila last summer before the 6-foot-8, 240-pounder signed a two-year contract with the Bulls, earning $2.2 million last season. However, Songaila declined to pick up the second-year option on that contract and drew interest from several teams before agreeing to terms with the Wizards yesterday.

Before signing with Chicago, Songaila played two seasons with the Kings, where he averaged 6.1 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 51.2 percent. Like the Wizards, the Kings ran a version of the Princeton offense and Songaila carved out a role as a good midrange shooter who flourished in the pick-and-roll game, and as a solid rebounder.

The addition of Songaila should give the Wizards some much-needed depth in the front court. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Iverson smiled, sort of.

"I don't know," he said. "You know, God works in mysterious ways. So whatever happens, happens."

"He's just a great person and he's a stand-up guy and he's straightforward... I want to play with Chris. When people said that we couldn't play together, we proved everybody wrong. Now we just have to try and win together. We want to win together." </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Seattlepi.com - An Oklahoma City group has agreed to buy the Seattle SuperSonics and the Seattle Storm.

In February, majority owner Howard Schultz threatened to possibly move or sell the city's oldest major league professional sports franchise, saying the team has lost about $60 million in the past five years

Jeffries_Jared_was.jpg
New York Daily News - Knicks GM Isiah Thomas says he is not actively pursing deals for free agents, but, according to sources, the Knicks have had conversations with Jeffries' agent, Andy Miller, in recent days as negotiations between Jeffries and the Wizards have stalled.

Jeffries is considering accepting Washington's one-year qualifying offer for approximately $3 million, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The Knicks can offer Jeffries their mid-level exception, starting at approximately $5.2 million. The Knicks are reluctant to add salary, but the 6-11 Jeffries, who can play four positions, would give the team a versatile player who is regarded as a strong defender. The 24-year-old Jeffries averaged 6.4 points and 4.9 rebounds in 77 games last season.

The Knicks' interest in Jeffries suggests that Thomas will not match the three-year, $7 million offer Jackie Butler received from the San Antonio Spurs . The Knicks have until tomorrow to decide on Butler's fate. By allowing Butler to leave, the Knicks would have one roster spot available.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Allen_Ray_sea.jpg
Press Release - The Basketball Club of Seattle (BCOS) announced today that it has signed a purchase agreement to sell its NBA Seattle SuperSonics and WNBA Seattle Storm for $350 million. The teams are being purchased by the Professional Basketball Club LLC, an Oklahoma City, Oklahoma based investment group led by Clayton I. Bennett, chairman of Dorchester Capital, a private investment company. Additional members of the group include Aubrey K. McClendon, Chairman and CEO, Chesapeake Energy Corporation; G. Jeffrey Records, Chairman of the Board and CEO, MidFirst Bank; Tom L. Ward, Chairman and CEO, Riata Energy, Inc., and G. Edward Evans, chairman, Syniverse Holding, Inc. The group will also consist of additional investors. The transaction is expected to close by the end of October of 2006.

“We have enjoyed the opportunity to own and operate the Sonics and the Storm for the past five seasons and are proud of what we’ve achieved both on and off the court,” said Howard Schultz, chairman of the Basketball Club of Seattle. “Since the majority of the Basketball Club of Seattle’s investors live and work in the Seattle community, it was extremely difficult for us to decide to sell the teams. As you may know, over the past two years, we have worked with local and state officials to seek a solution to the arena issues. However, it became more apparent that a new ownership group may be more successful in achieving the remaining goals of the Sonics and Storm.”

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to combine our passion for professional basketball and our abilities to build successful business enterprises,” said Bennett. “We thank the BCOS. They love this city and the Sonics and Storm. We appreciate the opportunity to lead a professional sports organization that has achieved the pinnacle of success within both the NBA and WNBA." </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
