D-I Hockey: March On D.C. Begins

INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division I Men?s Ice Hockey Committee has selected the 16 teams that will be participating in the 2009 NCAA Division I Men?s Ice Hockey Championship.

The championship playoff format involves four predetermined regional sites with four teams assigned to each site. The four regional winners advance to the Men?s Frozen Four. The entire championship uses a single-elimination format.

Automatic qualification privileges are granted to the postseason champions of six conferences. The remainder of the field is selected at large.

Boston University was the No. 1 overall seed. The other No. 1 seeds, in order, included the University of Notre Dame, the University of Denver and the University of Michigan.

The dates, sites, times and pairings of this year?s championship are as follows:

East Regional, March 27-28

Air Force has made it three straight seasons now. In each of their past two trips the Falcons lost in OT of the first round (against the No. 1-seeded ND two seasons ago and against Minnesota (after blowing a 3-1 third period lead) last season. I'm worried the third time will be the charm and it'll come at the expense of my Wolverines. As far as Ohio State goes, I'm actually picking the Buckeyes to upset the No. 1-seeded Terriers. Ohio State does well against good teams. It's the ones OSU should beat that have snuck up...

Good thing I picked ScUM to go to the Frozen Four in multiple pick'ems and one on CollegeHockeyNews.com.

When will I ever learn as an Ohio State alum to never depend on anything ScUM.

Air Force looked dead tired at the end, but hell, ScUm hasn't scored in like almost five periods.

And it looks like I was right when I said Air Force was due after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in each of the past two seasons. Air Force's goalie made a ton of saves, but the shots on goal don't do Air Force justice on how well they played. Yes, my Wolverines outshot them big time, but lots of them were bad shots that Air Force forced from way out by the blue line. Not a lot of real "scoring chances" in those 40+ Michigan shots.

As a bigger U-M hockey fan then I am football or basketball, this one stung big time. I had a hockey hang over that lasted a full 24 hours until ND somehow lost to Bemidji State in the Midwest regional. That put a smile back on my face.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Tyler Scofield had two goals and an assist, and Matt Dalton made 34 saves to help Bemidji State (19-15-1) beat top-seeded Notre Dame (31-6-3) by the score of 5-1 on Saturday night in the NCAA hockey Midwest Regional. :slappy:
