Game Thread Nebraska @ Ohio State - 11/03/18, 12:00PM (FOX)

Are you not entertained?
There are some positives from this game.
We have a running game! Dobbins had a fine day! And Weber provided some positive plays. Give this passing game a "complimentary" running game and we will be much harder to deal with.
Tackling looked improved even with our starting safety tossed. White played pretty solid in his first start. I fully expected Nebraska to take advantage but the improvised secondary held up.
Red Zone offense looked much improved. Davis playing TE for blocking seemed to work.
Special teams were solid.

Improvement was made in two major areas today. The running game and Red Zone Offense. And it was significant improvement in both of those areas. We failed in the turnover game but that hasn't been a major problem this year.

It's clear that the Defense still needs work. We have struggled with youth and injuries all year long. We've also struggled with bad schemes. We had three starters out in the secondary today after Fuller left. White looked very promising as his replacement. The DL has been disappointing ever since we lost Bosa. But I thought I saw some signs of hope though when the D stopped Nebraska on five straight occasions.

Still a ways to go but let's not lose hope.

GO BUCKS! Beat Sparty!
No. The Buckeyes did not make progress in those areas today. That was the #100 ranked defense in the country on the computers. Look at how the Buckeyes did today versus other teams they have played. Ohio struggled most of the game. Correct the ill-discipline and sloppiness and maybe they cover, but holy smokes.

I’m sure it’s already been covered, but one of the most glaring/head scratching things I saw......was how the hell hasn’t Brendan White gotten more time?

Guy was fantastic at keeping leverage, played downhill, and was a sure tackler.

Shit, go ahead and play him next to Fuller. We need that guy getting more time. He was a STUD.

It honestly makes you wonder how many other guys are buried on the depth chart that could be giving us quality snaps.

OSU fans wanted to see a running game, better LB play and competent safeties. There was a lot of growth in two of those areas.

Wade and White were not perfect but showed some nice potential. The LBs meanwhile continue to look like Madden when you guess wrong before the snap and tell your D to collapse the wrong way.

Two-Minute Drill: Postgame Reactions from Ohio State’s 36-31 Win Over Nebraska

Urban Meyer

+ Meyer began by thanking the military and the Ohio State fans. He said the fans really helped with the noise.

+ The red zone offense was improved, as was the running game. They worked hard over the last two weeks to get it done.

+ He got the effort he wanted from his team.

+ Safety Brendon White did a hell of a job in place of Jordan Fuller.

+ The defense has improved, but it’s not where they need to be. Due to injuries, it feels like all they keep doing is “stop-gapping.”

+ Asked if the defense is close to where they need to be, Meyer said no, then said yes.

+ Brendon White earned the trust through special teams play. He proved that trust was correct today.

+ Jeff Okudah had a freak injury and tweaked his groin on Tuesday. Isaiah Pryor had a shoulder impingement. Both should play next week.

+ Both running backs ran hard this week.

+ They made schematic changes on defense, playing more zone and off coverage than normal.

+ Meyer was happy with the win but upset with the turnovers.

+ They did several different things schematically to get the running game going. (They went without the RPO this week.)

+ “Get rid of the three turnovers and that’s a pretty good game.”

+ They are still trying to put the puzzle together in the secondary.

+ Nebraska is a two-win team that nobody wants to play right now.

OHIO STATE'S RUSHING ATTACK EXCELS, BUT BUCKEYES DON'T PUT TOGETHER COMPLETE GAME

98454_h.jpg

Ohio State’s coaching staff used everything it could during time afforded by the off week to recommit to the ground game after weeks of its decline.

The Buckeyes managed fewer than 100 rushing yards against Minnesota and Purdue in back-to-back weeks, which equaled the amount of sub-100 rushing yard games in the rest of Urban Meyer’s tenure as Ohio State’s head coach. Neither Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins had rushed for 100-plus yards in a game since Dobbins picked up 121 yards in the third week of the season against TCU.

A greater emphasis on running on Saturday wasn’t surprising to anyone, including Nebraska head coach Scott Frost who said on Tuesday that he thought the Buckeyes would be “a little more committed to the run coming off two weeks and extra time to work.”

It needed to be fixed, and everyone knew.

“We all wanted to silence the criticism of not being able to run the ball,” Isaiah Prince said. “I think we all took that personally.”

After hearing criticism for weeks, Isaiah Prince said he and the running backs gathered together in the locker room prior to his team’s 36-31 win against the Cornhuskers with a simple message: “You run as hard as we can, we'll block as hard as we can and you've got to get something positive out of that.”

Forty rushes later, Ohio State had accrued 229 yards on the ground for an average of 5.7 yard per game. Both are the team’s best totals since the opening week of the season.

“We worked ad nauseam at that. The amount of time that we spent at that was over the top, and I felt the line of scrimmage change,” Meyer said. “And it's difficult to run against that bear defense that Nebraska runs. And I thought the backs worked on pad level.”
