Need HTML Help

I am trying to take over maintenance for the recruiting spreadsheet that shows the scholarship breakdown. I have a copy of Front Page and it is a snap to keep it updated. The problem is that when I cut and paste the HTML to this site I get all sorts of extra white space. (Below I posted it immediately after my last line of text and the names withing each cell were single spaced).

A solution to this is to get rid of all the carriage returns and post it as one continuous line of HTML. Getting to that point after each update is just too much of a pain.

Anybody know of a beter solution?

The main problem (actually, the only problem) is the you're using FrontPage. It's a piece of shit. It puts in so much extraneous bullshit unnecessary code it's laughable. I personally do all my coding in straight code (HTML, ASP, ColdFusion, PHP although just learning it, etc.). I would break your page down into simple HTML and then just update that. Do you know any HTML yourself, or do you use FrontPage because you're not yet familiar with HTML?

mili hit it dead on. front page writes some of the most pathetic html known to man. it is quite easy to learn html on the other hand and i would be willing to answer any questions you have via PM.

if you don't want to learn html for whatever reason try a different program. i have never used any of them but i have heard macromedia's dreamweaver is pretty good. it is expensive though. fortunately there is a work around for acquiring any software/music/video/any large and pricey computer file. the bit torrent system is the wave of the future that will kill kazaa (and all its spyware and system crashing shit). of course downloading any copywritten material is against the law and not recommended by me at all. i of course only use it to download open source and noncommercial work.

browse through the categories in yellow and white near the top of the page for a small sampling of what is available in torrents. you will be amazed at what is out there.

on a man to man side note, there are no adult files on suprnova. there are torrent sites out there though that cater to that manly need as well. if interested PM me and i will pass along a link.

i have been using torrents for some time now and i have yet to run across any virus infested materials or download movies or programs that aren't as described. kazaa on the other hand i believe led to the destruction of my last computer (and my friend the irish patent attorney's computer, and he is a computer science undergrad so i would stay the hell away from kazaa and the like unless you like putting your dick in harm's way).

to download a torrent you will need a bit torrent program. the most popular two are shadow's experimental and azureus. i have used both but use only azureus now. it does require you to use java on your computer (which you probably are anyways) but if you don't want to use java, stick with shadow's. i don't have a download link for either of those programs but you can surely google them or find them on www.download.com i imagine.

one note about torrents. it is a give and take system. you must allow the rest of the community to download as much off of you as you take from the community. in fact while you are downloading something (say linux which is free anyway) the unfinished file on your computer is already being uploaded to the rest of the community. most torrent communities have a tracker program that keeps a log of your share ratio. if you don't upload as much as you download you will likely be banned from that particular torrent community and cut off from the good shit. that is how bit torrent goes so damn fast. i can download up to maybe 200kb/second. i can pull full copies of just about any dvd in the world into my computer and burn the damn disc within one night of drinking and playing xbox with my brother the CBG.

anyways, way off topic here but if you want to check out a better editor than front page maybe you can find something 'free' on bit torrent. front page isn't worth wiping your ass worth. worst code writer ever.

The main problem he's running into is actually something that the forum software does.

When you type a post, you don't do so in HTML You're just typing plain text. So when you want to start a new paragraph, you do so just like you would in a text or Word document, you just hit return a couple times. In order for that to display properly, the forum software inserts breaks in the form of the 'br' tag.

When you enter HTML through the system, it's still being handled as a post. So the difference between this;

HTML:

<table>
        <tr>
               <td>
               info
               </td>
        </tr>
</table>

and this;

HTML:

<table><tr><td>info</td></tr></table>

Is that the system is going to be adding a 'br' (break/drop down/carriage return) tag for each of those lines in the first example. Therefore, properly formatted HTML will result in the mess shown above. Because all those spaces have to show somewhere. It can't be in the table, so it displays them above it. The second example will display cleanly. Here's a text example of it in practice.

I didn't add an HTML br tag after each word, but the software did. It does for HTML too. That's the problem.

So basically, my first example above ends up looking like this to user's browsers;

Or something similar. You get the idea.

You get around this by reducing the HTML down to a single (wrapped) line. Which is a pain, and goes against better judgment. I have a text editor called UltraEdit that I do all my HTML in. Everything on this site (including editing the .php program files that run the place) was done through that, and it has a feature to strip carriage returns in text.

The bottom line is you shouldn't have to do it. And if someone doesn't have a tool like UltraEdit (commercial 'shareware' software), then it's an extremely annoying and tedious process to go through every single time you want to change something.

What probably needs to happen is a change to the PHP board code. Something simple that says "if I see HTML code, I (the board) will stop handling the text the way I would with a normal post". Or perhaps the creation of some bit of code that tells it where to stop and start paying attention. Who knows. It's beyond my scope, and Oh8ch's concern is entirely valid. Hopefully someone can toss out a good corrective solution.

I used your code Oh8, just stripped out all the html, head and body tags as we're nesting HTML within an existing webpage. Not constructing a new one in of itself. This seems to resolve the space issue entirely. By putting the HTML inside [.code.] and [./code.] tags (ignore the periods, they're there so the forum doesn't assume I'm trying to use 'code' commands.) Looks like some names need a line break after them, they're showing up next to others instead of under, but we're on the right track.

This negates the need to have the HTML reduced down to a single line of code.

The "Home Link Link1 Link 2......." has a small space between each list item in Firefox, but not in IE. I don't want it in Firefox. Any takers?

Try adding a padding="0" or margin="0" to <div id="links">.

What you see is what you get editors tend to cause a lot of issues, when I was a webmaster prior to becoming a sysadmin I hated them unless I needed to do my CSS sheet, HTML is very basic with very few actual pieces to the language if you are not doing **********. You have a table with either some ASP, or the *nix equivilant calls, I would recomend getting a good programming editor and letting it break it apart. As Clarity said, the editors tend to make reading your code harder than it needs to be.
