New Basketball Practice Facility

Every time we play a game in St John Arena and I'm stuck the entire game crammed into my seat with my knees jammed into the seatback in front of me, I'm reminded that the Schott is so far better a place to spend two hours watching hoop.

The better question is, why aren't you standing during the game?

Facility renovation under way

Assistant coach Jeff Boals wrote on his Twitter account today that the "demolition of the locker room is happening," meaning the first stage of work has begun on the long-anticipated renovation of the men's and women's practice and training facilities in the Schottenstein Center.

The locker rooms, meeting areas and lounges for each team will be enlarged by removing the current strength and conditioning room next to the men's locker room on the ground floor of the arena. The plan is for that to be completed by August.

The strength and conditioning area has been relocated to a temporary space in the building. A new area will be constructed between the existing auxiliary gym and the new one, which will extend above the loading dock on the west side of the arena. More room for the teams' video editing operations also will be part of that construction, which is scheduled to be completed by August 2013.

An athletic department official put the price of the project at $11 million last fall, but it has since risen to more than $13 million.

The renovations to the Schottenstein Center, which includes the hallway at ground level (pictured), will cost about $13.7 million.

The Ohio State Athletics Department began a two-part project to renovate the locker rooms and build a new practice gym for the men?s and women?s basketball team near the northwest rotunda at the Schottenstein Center.

Ben Jay, executive associate athletics director told The Lantern the expansion allows for a more versatile student-athlete schedule.

?When the gym is used by events, teams have to go to St. John or even the RPAC,? he said. ?This expansion will allow more flexibility for our teams.?

Renovations will begin in May after the athletic department receives bids from construction companies. The project is expected to be completed by September 2013.

?It?s much easier than building a new facility, we need to blow out the space and renovate it,? Jay said.

The project will cost about $13.7 million, 93 percent of which was fundraised.

?A lot of great Buckeyes responded (to the fundraising effort),? Jay said of the fundraising effort.

Assistant men?s basketball coach Jeff Boals said the bar has been raised for Big Ten facilities and it?s important they are updated.

?We spend so much time in the locker rooms. It will be a great place to hang out before practice, after practice and between classes,? he said.

Ohio St. behind schedule, over budget
Updated: November 8, 2012
Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A construction project that was to build a new practice gym for Ohio State's men's and women's basketball teams, expand the locker rooms and weight room and add a rehab and exercise pool is behind schedule and over budget.

Athletic director Gene Smith confirmed on Thursday that the project, which started in June and originally was to cost $13.7 million, had risen in price to $17 million and will end up with a $19 million price tag.

The cost increase and construction delays, originally reported by The (Ohio State) Lantern, likely will push the job's completion to next fall. The new locker rooms may be available later this month.

It is disappointing to learn that Plan 2, which was designed to reduce costs while not sacrificing any amenities by taking away the Hall of Fame and aesthetic aspect of the project, is actually going to cost more than Plan 1 was projected to cost ($22M). Phase A is costing $19M - the starting cost they had for that part was $11M, it apparently was expected to cost $13.7M and now $19M. I'm assuming they still plan on doing Phase B (which involves the coaches' offices and ticket office), which was projected to cost $4-4.5M. That's at least $23M total. Maybe Plan 1 would've cost more anyway, but how much more could it have been? Is it worth it to have a worse product to have the new gym a few years earlier?

Photo: LeBron James has locker at Ohio State's new basketball facility

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- LeBron James may have never played college basketball, but he does have a locker at Ohio State.

James' locker was noticed by media members during a tour this morning of the Buckeyes' new practice facility in Columbus. The Miami Heat star is known as a big Ohio State fan. The basketball team has worn James' Nike branded uniforms since 2011.

Maybe he plans to go back to school when his NBA career is over?

For some reason I expected there to be a much nicer and larger weight room. It just seems pretty small and stripped down for a conditioning room of a competitive, big-named university basketball team. Nice small details, nothing that blew me away - seems like stuff Ive always expected them to have.

I am not for one second concerned about the quantity of weight lifting equipment there. There are plenty of places players can go to lift weights if they want something different. I guess my concern is I haven't seen what looks $19 million. Maybe their intent wasn't to make it look extraordinary from the outside but still for a project that was supposed to cost $13 million and ended up jumping up to $19 million after they got it started, I really don't understand what caused the ultimate cost to be that far off of the initial projection.
