An article from the beginning of the season, when, despite going to the regional finals last year, not many were giving Newark the respect they deserved...

NEWARK -- Returning three starters from a team that finished 24-2 last year, the Newark boys basketball team will take plenty of momentum into a season that starts Saturday at Briggs. But as practices began last week, the Wildcats realize what lies ahead in them in trying to repeat their success.

COLUMBUS -- It was a neutral site for the Division I state final Saturday at Ohio State's Value City Arena, but Newark's rabid fans gave the Wildcats a home court advantage. With fans scattered around the arena and a vocal mass on Newark's end, the Wildcats treated the large number of supporters to the school's first state title since 1943 with a 65-52 win against Lakewood St. Edward.

Newark's Will McCoy, right, tangles with Lakewood St. Edward's Tom Pritchard in the Division I championship game.

Newark wasn't even supposed to get out of the Central District tournament. So what were the Wildcats -- seeded sixth in the district just four weeks ago -- doing last night in Value City Arena, upsetting Lakewood St. Edward 65-52 for the Division I state championship?

Hey just curious if you know, but did he have any other offers other than Western Carolina?

Here's a blurb from an article from the beginning of the season...

He's gotten looks from Ohio University, Bowling Green and Western Carolina, and Quackenbush said a lot of extra responsibility -- bringing the ball up the court, more rebounding and guarding bigger offensive threats -- will be thrown his way.

Fwiw.

I wonder who the coach down at West Carolina knows in Licking/Muskingum counties.

Western Carolina's coach Larry Hunter was the long time coach at OU and I believe Wittenberg before that so he knows Ohio pretty well. He's snagged quite a few Ohio kids down there.

Avery looks like a player to me. Talking to some people that went to the game they thought the Ohio MAC schools will be sorry he got away.

Greg Avery-Butler,W.Carolina,Akron,Ohio,Wright State.
Supposedly committed to Western Carolina recently.I doubt he signs with them with the break out game last night, some bigs will come calling this week.
Ohio backed out because they had other guards in mind,I think they messed up there..lol
OSU could use some insurance at guard with Offutt's knees and Buford possibly gone after next year.Avery can play at OSU,no doubt in my mind, test scores were in issue back in November if I recall.Don't know about where's he's at right now with test scores.

The 6'7 Kevin Martin was 4th in Mr.Basketball in Ohio in 2001 (LBJ won that year and of course the next 2 years) and played at Zanesville HS and was severly missed by the Big schools, the problem with him was his slight build I think and most schools didn't think he could compete physically...bad move.He went on to Western Carolina and averaged 23.3 pts per game in 3 season at W.Carolina.OSU tried to get him to transfer ,but was unsuccessful.
Martin was drafted in the first RD with the 26nd pick in the 2004 NBA draft by the Kings and is now averaging 22.6 ppg at the 2 guard spot.

"Although strong may be thy rivals, they cannot withstand our might, for we all shall be defenders, of the Crimson and the White."

Does anybody see any Crimson and White in that picture? Back in the '50s and '60s the BB, and FB team, for that matter wore beautiful Crimson and White unis. Where these deep Maroon/ almost Black unis have come from I have no clue...no doubt because I have been away from the area for decades. But I would love to hear why my beloved alma mater strayed from its colorful roots.

Go Bucks! Go Wildcats!
