Im not a spokesperson... sheesh, I know about this thing called the PC... Just thought the video was interesting, but not enough for it's own thread.

It wasn't directed personally at you. More of a comment on the people in the video acting like open source is a big deal.

EDIT: Oops, I said it was. I meant it wasn't.

I wondered how long it would be before someone posted this. It's interesting but I still think there is a very healthy market for " major" production style games likes the Halo series, NCAA, FEFA, etc.... But having a variety of free games at the fingertips of the buyer is great considering the starting price is only 99.99

I think there are two interesting experiments developing in gaming Right now. One is the cheap open source platform that the article talks about. Cool looking, cheap and brings fun and free games to a console form factor.

The second is a major production from a hugh company. They are doing something unique in that they are creatively combining gaming and cinematics by both setting the stage with weekly 15 min long story riching mini movies released by web and then continuing the live action mini movies with 5 to 15 min long installments that set the player no a given goal or objective. They seem to be really trying to weave the two forms of entertainment together.

So will people favor a quick, cheap, approach even if it means less production and polish or will they be willing to pay more but receive a much more detailed product.

Personally, I will pay for the richer content...

Just curious to see...is/would anyone switch platforms from what you have now to the new generation of systems?

For example: you have a 360 now and would switch to the new Playstation and vice versa

I would only switch if there was a major difference in content and power of the next consoles. Right now, I feel that both systems have their own advantages (PS3 has Bluray, 360 a better online experience etc..) but as far as the games themselves, the two consoles are very similar.

Also, it would be hard for me to give up my 30,000+ gamerscore..

Depends...I have the PS3, and I like alot of their PS3 only games like, Uncharted and inFamous. Would have to see what the next gen consoles offer, but for now I'd say i'll be sticking with the PS4

As a PS3 guy I am more inclined to buy the next Sony product. Unless the new Xbox blows it away; but if they're comparable my brand loyalties will come through.

This. I'm also a PS3 guy. I am still not used to the stupid xbox controller. Also who wants to pay for online play. (insert joke about PS3's online gaming sucking) I am not a super serious call of duty guy. I like drake's fortune, metal gear solid, elder scrolls, fifa, ncaa football, mlb etc etc. I also only play 2-10 hours a week.

tl;dr PS3 ->PS4.

I was a Playstation guy until my PS1 died one day and while I was walking down the catwalk at my barracks, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a Marine playing Splinter Cell. I went and asked what it was and he let me know... then he told me about the internal hard drive and lower loading times.....

I gathered all of my Playstation stuff and traded it in and bought an XBox...

Now, once the PS3 came out, I already had a 360, but I also purchased a PS3. My PS3 was a lemon, freezing constantly etc and I sold it.....

IF the PS4 is significantly better than the Nextbox, I would consider switching.... I LOVED a lot of the PS exclusives, Gran Turismo, Ratchet & Clank, SOCOM, God of War, and who doesn't love some Solid Snake? Also, I do not play Halo and Gears of war got old....

Things to consider.... Online content, blueray/3d, next gen kinect/voice control, price and what will my friends be playing.....

I Have both. Sony has lost most of its draw with exclusive titles, with a number going cross platform and some switching altogether.

Xbox has been way ahead of Sony when it comes to stretching out the life of the console. The Kinect mops the floor with ps3 move. They also get online media outlets long before Sony, such as Netflix. Most come to both eventually but not all.

Paying 35 a year is absolutely worth it for the party system and much larger pool of online gamers. This is especially key for finding friends to play with, without which battlefield 3 is infuriating. The volume of gamers also matters a lot for older games like bad company 2, as I can still.consistently.find full servers.

The ps3 controller is not as comfortable for long gaming sessions. both are fine but the improved ergonomics and especially the trigger make a big difference. Neither is a liability for casual gamers and anyone claiming it is too awkward hasn't played with it much. We aren't talking about the original xbox or Dreamcast controller here.

You cannot go wrong with either but I find most people stick with what they know rather than truly finding out which is better.

I figured this was the case.

I however, had a PS2 slim up through my freshman year at OSU. That is when I saw the beautiful thing called Halo.

I bought a 360 after that, and other than trying a PS3, I haven't looked back

For the record, I hate all iterations of Halo after the iconic original (which was great, too bad they took the easy way out and pretended to remake it last year) and am not that fond of Gears of War. Whoa, Mass Effect is one of my favorite games ever. Nasty typo.

Likewise, I love Little Big Planet, especially since I could buy the console "for the wife" She was addicted to both iterations of that game.

It will be interesting to see how the next console plays out. Sony had a killer feature in the media wars with BluRay winning out, yet they got beat badly in actual gaming.

The market has made it pretty clear that software drives gaming. People adored the Wii until the games ran out, even though it had laughably bad graphics. The PS2 continued to outsell the Xbox despite very inferior hardware due to the exclusive games. Likewise, the 360 provided a much better online experience and got a huge lead they never surrendered. The kinect helped but that was more of running up the score.

That's why the open-source console is intriguing. I hope they can push the market, even just enough to make Sony & Microsoft raise their games higher.
