Shamar Taylor
Ht: 5-10 Wt: 175 40: 4.4
Position: CB
Projected as: CB
High School: Neptune Senior HS
(Neptune, NJ)

Biography:
One of the top cornerbacks in the state of New Jersey, Taylor will be among the state's fastest players this year inside the state. He suffered a broken ankle that ended his junior season but expects to rebound in a big way as a senior.

http://www.app.com/app/story/0,21625,959697,00.html

His name is probably foreign to even the most diehard Shore Conference football fan.

Yet after Wednesday night's inaugural Elite College Combine in the practice bubble at Giants Stadium, his name was on the tip of the tongues of a handful of major Division I-A college programs.

"Oklahoma was loving him, and Syracuse and Rutgers loved him," said Nick Lubischer, a former Shore Regional star and current Oceanport resident who analyzes New Jersey players for the recruiting Web site Rivals.com.

"Rutgers will be in school (for him) on Monday."

The mystery man is Neptune junior Shamar Taylor. In the course of three hours, the defensive back may have altered a future that didn't look so bright not too long ago.

Ineligible as a sophomore after being involved in what he said was "an altercation off the field from running with the wrong crowd," Taylor then missed all of last season with a recurring right ankle injury.

That's why Wednesday may have meant more to him than just about any of the 104 other elite players from New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania who were in attendance. It was an accomplishment just to be among the field, as Wednesday's event differed from other camps in that it was invitation-only.

"This (combine) is like the biggest thing to me," Taylor said on Wednesday. "I think this definitely helped put my name out there. This is just as important as my senior (football) season. This is all I have right now."

Event chairman Joseph Natale, the father of The Hun School star quarterback Dom Natale, helped the combine become a reality. Lubischer and Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Michael Farrell put together the list of 120 invitees, and Farrell said 105 were in attendance.

Just like the annual NFL Combine in Indianapolis, athletes had their official heights and weights measured and were timed in several different drills, including running the all-important 40-yard dash. They also competed head-to-head as assistants from about 80 major Division I-A colleges furiously scribbled down times and notes. The annual meet market that heralds the coming of the NFL Draft has filtered down to the high school level in smaller form around the country.

"The one-on-one stuff is the most important," said an assistant from a Big 12 school. "You get to see some of the top guys go head-to-head, and you see how well they compete. You see talent against talent."

Even if that talent might be relatively unknown.

Taylor turned in a blazing 4.37-second time in the 40-yard dash on Wednesday to become one of the latest beneficiaries of professional-style scouting combines that have continued to grow in New Jersey.

While Nike is now in its seventh year in putting on football combines across the country, the sneaker behemoth is no longer alone as there are more and more chances like Wednesday's event for high school players to give college coaches an up-close look at what they can (and sometimes can't) do. While these camps are not yet the institutions they have become in high school basketball, it appears to be headed that way.

"In New Jersey alone, there are four combines in May," Farrell said. "In the past few years, if there were one of these, they were lucky."

It has gotten to the point where a few hours at a combine might be as important as an entire season on the gridiron.

"This is all (college coaches) have to go on me right now," Taylor said. "I hope that I catch somebody's eye, just so I get an opportunity."

Taylor lists Ohio State, Syracuse, Rutgers and North Carolina as schools he's hearing from. The Tar Heels currently lead.

In article above it also mentioned Donald Brown who is a tOSu recruit- he ran a 4.27 40

Red Bank Catholic running back/defensive back Donald Brown is a sprinter on the track team and had to decide whether to forgo the Monmouth County and Shore Conference Championships in favor of Wednesday's combine and the upcoming Nike camp at Penn State, respectively. He has chosen to attend the track meets, and softening the blow is the fact that he ran a 4.27 40-yard dash at the BigTime Challenge, a combine held earlier this spring.

"It was a tough choice, but in my heart I knew I couldn't let my team down," Brown said. "It can make you or break you, but I personally think combines still aren't like a real football game. When you put people in pads, it's a totally different game."

Another player who did not make it to Wednesday's combine was Red Bank junior Kade Weston, who is considered the top returning defensive lineman in New Jersey. Since he already has offers from more than 20 programs, including Florida and Florida State, his stock could have only gone down with a subpar performance and stayed where it is with a good showing.

more on Donald Brown

DB - Yes!

Why?.. DB - I'm not really a verbal leader, I lead by actions... making big plays in time of need.

13) What impression do you want to leave on the Shore conference at seasons end? ... In other words - if everyone in the shore came to see you play one game, what would you want them to say about you as they left the game?..

DB - "Man, that kid is a playmaker!"

14) Is there a phrase or slogan that is embedded in your mind - something you repeat in your head over and over again? ...

DB - "Its not the size of the dog in the fight.. Its the size of the fight in the dog"!

15) Is there any positive advice that you are willing to share with younger players reading this? ... In other words - if you had a loudspeaker and football players from the area had a chance to hear you pass on advice, what would you say?..

DB - Make your priorities first in life. Be a leader - not a follower, just because everyone else is doing it.

16) Who is the best player in the state?...

There is a rivals update on Shamar Taylor. At the Elite College Combine he ran a 4.37 40, had a 4.07 pro agility time and a 120" standing broadjump and was one of the most impressive cover corners at the combine. He currently lists his favorites as North Carolina, Ohio State, Virginia, Penn State, West Virginia, Iowa and Rutgers. He will play be playing QB this year as well as corner. He does not currently list a leader.

Shamar Taylor (Neptune, NJ) has been officially identified as a "sleeper" - in May! He'll probably lose that tag soon, especially if he keeps logging sub-4.4's. He's on the small side at 5'10", and has already had both injury and "off-the-field" issues. However, CB's with big time speed will usually land some big time offers. Taylor's teammate, safety Mysonn Ledet, is also looking at the Buckeyes.

Another New Jersey safety, Ronnie Cutler (Jersey City Hudson Catholic), has the prototypical size for a Big Ten safety (6'3", 205), and lists OSU amongst his top 3 schools. However, Ohio State is already loaded at safety, as is hoping to land Hamilton's Adam Myers-White in this class, which will leave little room for any other prospects at that position.

Looks like Eugene Monroe is a pretty good shot putter on top of being one of the best O-lineman in the country.

http://www.c-n.com/news/c-n/story/0,2111,959803,00.html

Plainfield's boys turned perhaps the day's biggest surprise, tying Elizabeth for the American Division crown. Nigel Armstrong was the hero, winning the final event -- the triple jump -- to knot the score at 128.5.

But a lot of athletes chipped in, including Robert Crudup and Eugene Monroe, who went 1-2 in the shot, and senior Willie Bryant, who won the 800 (2:02.8) and 1600 (4:38.6) and placed third in the 400 (51.0).

Here's a nice article on "sleeper" recruits from New Jersey: Cruising Under the New Jersey Radar (RutgersFan.com 6/8/04)

Mysonn Ledet, DB, Neptune (5-foot-11, 191lbs)
