It can't hurt having a coach with ties to that state. NJ has a lot of talent most years (and no less than 3 top 100 players this year in Monroe, Cushing, and Weston), so it's good to see OSU's name getting out amongst the recruits.

It seems that I logged out about an hour too early last night - Monroe commits to UVa, Cushing enjoys his visit there and now has the Cavs in his top 3, Stross and Marcus Wilson commit to Iowa....

It's a bit unusual for a 5* guy with no ties to a school to commit so early. I never thought that the Bucks had much of a chance with Monroe anyway, but a June commitment to Virginia is very surprising.

VA newspaper article about Monroe commitment

The nation’s top high school offensive tackle committed to Virginia on Sunday after visiting the Cavaliers’ “Junior Day” this past weekend.

Eugene Monroe, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound man-child from Plainfield, N.J., is rated the No. 11 overall football prospect in the nation by Rivals and the No. 1 prospect in the state of New Jersey. He is the highest-rated player in the country to commit from the upcoming senior class.

Monroe had more than 40 scholarship offers, including all the powerhouses in the country: LSU, Southern Cal, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Miami, Florida State and Michigan to name a few.

“Virginia was one of my favorite schools and Maryland was one of the others,” Monroe said from his home Sunday night. “Coming into the trip, I just wanted to see more of Virginia. I had no intentions of committing.

“But everything just fell into place there,” said the five-star tackle. “When I was watching film with Coach [Ron] Prince, I was really wanting to commit but I decided it would be better to go home and think about it for a while. I couldn’t find any negatives about Virginia and I just felt like there was no other school that I would be interested in after seeing Virginia.”

The massive tackle, who runs a 5.25 in the 40, drove down to UVa’s junior day event with five-star linebacker Brian Cushing, a 6-3, 221, standout from Oradell, N.J. Cushing is ranked by Rivals as the No. 26 overall prospect in the nation.

“We kind of drove around the campus and the city after the junior day was over,” Monroe said. “I’ve already emailed Brian to let him know that I committed.”

Monroe said he was going to do the same with some of the other top prospects in the country in hopes of joining forces in the “new ACC.”

“Since I’m going to be a member of the Virginia team, then why not try to get other good players to come with me?” Monroe said.

He said he was particularly impressed by the speakers Virginia introduced on the topic of academics, one of the main areas of his interest.

He and Cushing didn’t meet Coach Al Groh until the junior day event, but did spend some time with assistant coaches Mike Groh and Mark D’Onofrio. D’Onofrio came to Virginia this spring from Rutgers, where he was recruiting coordinator.

Some recruiting coordinators have compared Monroe to NFL greats Jonathan Ogden and Orlando Pace, but he said he wants to carve out his own reputation. One coordinator said that Monroe is only five stars simply because there’s no such thing as a six star.

“The first thing recruiters say they like about me is that I’m a good student and good person,” Monroe said. “They feel like I’m very advanced for the stage I’m in right now.”

As a high school junior last season, Monroe registered 57 pancake blocks. While the number is impressive, the big tackle said he can do better.

“I think I should have over 100 of them this year if I stay healthy,” Monroe said.

He is the Cavaliers’ 14th early commitment for next February’s recruiting class.

Monroe is now recruiting Cushing, Derrick Williams, Melvin Alaeze and others to go to VA

Virginia had a good recruiting class last season, with commitments from highly-rated DE's Olu Hall and Clint Sintim (who both strongly considered Ohio State), along with CB Philip Brown (Insiders 5*, No. 2 CB prospect nationally, behind Ted Ginn), CB Nate Lyles (Insiders 4*), and TE Tom Santi (Insiders 4*). It looks like they are continuing the success this year, with Monroe on board, and other top high schools stars giving UVa some serious attention.

Shamar Taylor had a good Insiders MSL camp at Hofstra

Down the road at Neptune (N.J.), they have several prospects, including safety Shamar Taylor. He ran the fastest 40 of the day with a 4.41 time, and he was a lockdown corner in the one-on-one drills.

James Williams (DB, 5'11"-180lbs, 4.5 forty) from Plainfield H.S in Plainfield, New Jersey is among the top 50 prospects in the state of New Jersey. As a result, he has drawn the attention of schools such as Virginia Tech, Ohio State, South Carolina, Iowa, and Rutgers.

During the weekend of April 23rd, he traveled to Virginia Tech for their spring game. He liked the campus, facilities, location, and the fans. He met a number of the team members and liked the relationship between them and the coaches. He also liked the aggressive play of the DBs and the athleticism of their skilled players, especially Marus Vick.

During the trip, he was a part of the Tom Lemming recruiting road trip 2004. He took a number of photos and was interviewed for his publication. During the weekend, James Williams met numerous top recruits including Super soph Myron Rolle.

Iowa, OSU, South Carolina, and Rutgers are still showing a lot of interest. Each school will be in to visit him during the May evaluation period.

Williams continues to work hard off the field. He has increased his bench press to 250lbs and improved his squat to 400lbs. His work in the weightroom has improved his forty yard dash time by bringing his time closer to a 4.5 forty. As part of his workout he runs five 100-meters and runs four 40 yard dashes per day, seven days per week. All of this is after his track practice.

Rutgers insiders premium

The above premium article says that Rashwan has over 30 offers and tOSU is one of them. Rutgers and UVA are listed as favorites and 4 other schools (tOSU, Miami, NE, Tenn) are deadlocked for 3rd place (all have offered). He certainly fits the bill as a big back. :yow1:

He hopes to visit tOSU before the end of the summer. Maybe Coach Hazell can work some magic.
