Top247 WR De'zie Jones details Ohio State commitment

Top247 receiver De'zie Jones did not thing playing for Ohio State was even a dream until last year, and now it will be a reality.

The Wayne (N.J.) DePaul standout visited campus Saturday, and he left as a member of the Buckeyes' class of 2-25 are making and announcing his commitment.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Jones is from the same high school that produced NFLer and former Ohio State safety Ronnie Hickman.

"I didn't believe I could (play at Ohio State) until last year, to be honest," Jones said. "There were a whole lot of nice receivers there but going up here and being more confident, I feel like I could do it."

Jones, who is the No. 25 receiver in the nation and No. 8 player in New Jersey, was offered by the Buckeyes in late September and began building relationship with receivers coach Brian Hartline.

"He showed that he develops the best receivers," Jones said. "He was telling me how being around the best players is going to develop you as a person yourself, so I take that into consideration and I see that is the truth."

Jones made the visit with several family members, including his dad. During the time on campus, the atmosphere around the program captured Jones' attention.

"I like the culture, everybody on the team and how they treat each other," he said. "They treat their players more like on an NFL basis and they always compete here."

One of the things Jones knows about the Buckeyes is they are always in contention for the college football playoff, and the idea of playing in one is on his mind.

"I'm excited," Jones said. "Hopefully, I can be in one of those."

“He knew that I had official visits set up before I committed so he let me know that if I wanted to become a Buckeye, no more visits to other schools,” Jones said. “If you’re going to do this, be 100 percent. He was giving me a rundown and also congratulated me and told me he was excited. And I’m excited too.

“What made me want to become a Buckeye was the opportunity to learn from the experienced wide receivers that are there already and alumni that can teach me more about the school. They have produced the best receivers over the years and I feel like I’ll be developed the best by that school. I trust the coaches and love the culture over there and the tempo of how they practice.”

“That’s the most shocking thing ever, bro,” said Jones, who will be a slot receiver for OSU. “I’ve known that guy since our flag football days and know we’re going to the same college. We’ve played in the same little league and on the same high school team. It’s just insane. I can’t believe it myself.”
