Brandon Wimbush has yet to start a varsity game at quarterback for St. Peter’s Prep, but when it comes to facing the high pressure and expectations that come with the position, he’s already a seasoned veteran.

The 6-1-1/2, 205-pound Wimbush is the country's No. 74 ranked prospect in the junior class by ESPN and his head coach Rich Hansen has compared him favorably to former Star-Ledger Offensive Player of the Year and current New York Giants safety Will Hill.

“When I say those things, I don’t say them lightly,” Hansen said. “He’s a really gifted quarterback, who is a great athlete. Will is a really gifted athlete, who happened to be a good quarterback. Brandon takes pride in his craft. Being a quarterback is who he is and what he’s about.”

Rather than be fazed by the pressure, Wimbush has embraced the challenge as he officially takes over the offense at St. Peter’s Prep after seeing limited action a year ago.

“I’ve put this pressure on myself because I felt like I had a good offseason,” said Wimbush, who already has scholarship offers from Ohio State, Rutgers, Miami, Maryland and others. “I’ve been working to get to this point in my career and it’s the season I’ve been waiting for.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Urban Meyer opted to wait until rather late in the 2014 recruiting cycle before sending out scholarship offers to quarterbacks, the reasoning being that Ohio State'™s head coach puts such an onus on recruiting the right players at that position.

But when a dynamic talent comes around, sometimes waiting isn'™t always the best policy. That was specifically the case with 2015 quarterback Brandon Wimbush, a highly touted dual-threat prospect of Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter'™s Prep.

Wimbush talks recruiting: NJ.com video

Already having had offers from Boston College, Connecticut, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Rutgers and Temple before getting into the meat of his junior season, Wimbush got good news recently when the Buckeyes threw their name into the hat.

"œI didn't know it was going to come this early, but I am happy it did," Wimbush told Cleveland.com. "œFor me to get the offer this early is really a blessing, because I know they waited last year with quarterbacks and I thought they were going to do the same this year. I am one of the few 2015 quarterbacks to get an Ohio State offer."

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Prep’s Wimbush coming of age
Oct 13, 2013

St. Peter’s Prep junior quarterback Brandon Wimbush

Rich Hansen knew that Brandon Wimbush had all the physical tools to be an outstanding high school quarterback, so the veteran St. Peter’s Prep head football coach wanted the prodigy to fully understand that thought.

“I thought he had the chance to be the best quarterback we ever had,” Hansen said. “So I told him in April that he had 24 chances to prove it, to be the best we ever had.”

That alone was saying a lot. After all, there have been a lot of excellent signal callers to come out of the storied program from Grand and Warren. Guys like Joe Dailey went to the University of Nebraska from Prep. In recent years, Brandon Napoleon went to West Virginia University after his days with the Marauders were through.

Not to mention, the best all-around football player to ever wear the maroon, white and silver was also a quarterback who happens to play safety for the New York Giants, namely Will Hill.

So Hansen was really asking a lot of Wimbush, placing such huge expectations of someone who was just beginning his junior year.

“I believed he could be great,” Hansen said. “He had a chance to be great. The expectations are different of him than others. The bar I’ve set for him is so high. It’s actually really unfair, but I believe he could be that good.”

Scout $ - After OSU Trip, Wimbush Nearing Decision

10/29

By Dohn.....Had a meeting with Coach Meyer & was told Ohio State would accept his commitment whenever he's ready. Realizes that other QBs want to commit to Ohio State, so he plans on making a decision immediately after his season. Says Real Life Wednesdays made a big impression on him & his parents.

Just watched his DC Elite 11 film. Some pros and some cons. Has the frame to add serious muscle and become a much stronger QB....and a college S&C program will help him not sacrifice speed or flexibility. Has big hands which is a great asset to have as a QB. Great feet and you can tell he has some of that "twitch" all great athletes have. Throws great on the run (see the second highlight in the clip below for further proof) but will need to work on his accuracy a bit. Not sure if it was a windy day there or what but struggled to hit a stationary target in the numbers at times. I see more QB here where as I see more athlete with Nunez and Gibson. A lot of positives here but I will want to see some junior film. Herman and Meyer thought enough of his FNL performance to offer him which says a lot. Kids that get personal workouts with the staff tend to be guys that the OSU staff gets in on early (i.e. Darron Lee, Mike Gesicki, Terry McLaurin) and I put a lot of stock in that.
