Notre Dame tight end Chase Hounshell announced on Twitter Monday morning that he is transferring to Ohio State.
“I can’t thank ND enough but I am excited to announce I will be transferring to THE Ohio State University! Go Bucks! ” Hounshell tweeted.
Because he is a graduate transfer, he is eligible to play this fall. He will be a walk-on and will not count against OSU’s scholarship limit, according to media reports.
Hounshell originally committed to Coach Urban Meyer when he was at Florida but flipped to the Irish when Meyer stepped down. Hounshell appeared in 13 games last season, making three starts. He had one catch for six yards against Wake Forest.
Since he is a graduate transfer, Hounshell will be eligible immediately for the Buckeyes. The Mentor native coul add depth to the tight end position, where Marcus Baugh appears to be the starter. Two other freshman will join Hounshell in the fall and provide depth behind the spring game standout
Hounshell began his career as a defensive lineman, making four tackles in 2011 and two tackles in 2014. He missed all but one game in 2012 and the entire 2013 season because of injury. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility because of the two missed seasons.
The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Ohio native is a graduate of Lake Catholic High School in Mentor.
