Now, the Miami Herald weighs in...

Response from Jeff Shain, author of the article...yes he wrote in blue font and I refuse to change his prissy font.:

Greetings,

It appears to me each of you is guilty of the very thing you have accused me of -- jumping to conclusions. Go back over my words and show me where I said Ohio State is lead-pipe guilty.

Yes, I acknowledge I said it's not a huge stretch to think the basketball mess may spill over into football. But that falls short of a full indictment. I just said it's not out of the realm of possibility. Heck, I've been at schools where violations engulfed two or three programs at once.

Nor have I suggested any of this was done with the knowledge and/or blessing of Andy Geiger. Again speaking from past reporting experience, I'm well aware violations can take place without the knowledge of anyone in the athletic department.

My point remains that because of the recent basketball revelations, you cannot dismiss Clarett's allegations out of hand. It's possible -- though by no means absolute -- that we're not dealing with an isolated incident. The only way to know for sure is to reopen the case.

And no matter the outcome, would any of you disagree that a re-examination could get messy? Heck, it's already messy. And new reports tonight about problems at Youngstown State during Tressel's tenure don't make it any tidier.

A few of you have told me Cooper, Maldonado, Sturrup, etc. have retracted their statements, but I've done a search of the Nexis library and a general Google search, and neither has turned up any such items as of 10pm EDT. Perhaps there will be something in the morning news reports. And if Maryland has issued a statement on behalf of Maldonado, they did not see fit to put it on their Web site.

No, I'm not ready to throw stones. But I am interested to see what twists this saga may yet reveal. At this point, I'm simply not willing to rule anything out. It may not be a bad idea for you to do likewise.

Thanks for writing,
Jeff Shain

My response:

Each of the retracted statements can be found on the 1460 THEFAN website http://www.1460thefan.com. The interviews can be obtained in the archives or by simply emailing the station. I am sure they would provide you with the tapes. I agree this entire situation is absurd. However, your journalistic integrity should call for solid facts...not insinuation. ESPN has done enough insinuation for all of us.

Thanks for your reply.

Just as an additional point... I also heard on 1460 that the "lawsuit" that he refers to was dropped. Anyone know how we can check that out?
