Observations from the Barcalounger - Iowa 2004

Anybody who has follows my posts knows that I try to stay positive and find something good about the Bucks no matter the outcome. Well screw that.

Play of the game – Jim Tressel taking a time out, running onto the field, and going ape – all to argue that Iowa should be 3rd and 9 instead of 3rd and 5. Only to win the battle and have Iowa run for a first down – with their fifth string walk-on RB.

Player of the game – Sirjo Welch. I only say him make one nice play – but that was all it took today.

We sent 14 players to the NFL last season – But we still have recruits on this team that Iowa can only dream of having. And they are not without experience. The rule that you can play Juniors and Sophomores – and even Freshman - is not new. Other teams have done it. This is no longer an excuse.

When is the last time? - All I have heard the last three weeks is “When is the last time we…” (lost to NU? Lost at Iowa? Lost two straight? Lost three straight?) Well, I can’t remember the last time I switched off an OSU game with 5 minutes gone in the second half to watch another game and switch back occasionally to see how the OSU game was coming . I mean, I will look over to check out a car wreck as I drive by, but if I see blood and guts I always turn my head.

Key question - If Jim Tressel is who he says he is, and who I have always believed he is, why did his team quit today?

Second Guessing game - Anybody still want to argue that the problem is Ross playing ahead of Pittman? Zwick playing ahead of Smith?

Can you imagine - an easier job than the DC who is getting ready to play OSU?

It could be worse - Instead of being a frustrated OSU fan you could be Jim Tressel this week. Lucy – you got some splaining to do. Except we wont be collecting one 52nd of a million dollars this week.

It could be much worse – Now that we know Zwick really is ‘the man’ (relatively speaking of course) what do we do next week if Zwick is injured? Anybody think Smith looked one week away from leading this Offense?

Remember when? - Remeber how good a coach John Cooper was when he had Walt Harris? I sure miss Dantonio. Take another look at the performance of the O. Not today. For the past four years.

And finally, because I simply can’t resist - the positives. I hurt my knee a while back and when I started favoring it my foot started giving me problems. That led to problems with my hip. Point being, even though every dimension of our game sucked today it doesn’t mean everything is broke. The O has to keep the D off the field now and then. The QB and RBs need some blocking to be effective. And the OL needs time to develop. Our OL has one player who has been at OSU more than two years and two months – and he is a former walk-on. The class that should have been leading this OL as seniors consisted of Cook and Olds. The best OL in the next class was Derek Morris. None of that excuses today’s performance. Nothing excuses that performance. But ….. Aw shit, I can’t even finish this argument.

Oh8ch,
Do you see any positives with this present Offensive line (not stated in a negative)? I just wish they would sustain blocks until the whistle blows. I do find a little solace in the fact that this Offensive line is inexperiences, but more of the younger kids coming like Mitchum and of the '05 class. I am still looking for positives with this line though.

Agree with both of your posts....... Right now Segio Welch is playing excellent on Special Teams!! There's so many problems with us that I just dont' feel like typing because its just been repeated over and over so I won't beat a dead horse.

I can't believe how bad we played. Maybe we should let some of the scout team play. I think they would put forth more effort. Our O line was poor. Both Q backs looked bad. Ross was terible as always. The Defense sucked. The play calling and coaching sucked.

The sad thing is that is the most emotion I think we have seen out of Tressel this year!!!! That is really sad when you consider we had lost the previous 2 games and not once did you see him ever get pissed off or fired up about it. He seemed to take it as business as usual.

The problem with this team right now is there doesnt seem to be any "blood and guts" its seems like they are already dead! When was the last time you saw a team put out less effort then in todays game? Answer, Coops last game against South Carolina, I truely dont think I have been as dissapointed in a team as much as I am in this one right now.

Unfortunately I think the players are starting to question some of his coaching methods in "Tresselball", whether that can be confirmed or not is moot, because actions speak louder then words, and the way we played out there on the field today spoke volumes of what this team is like at this current point in time.

I think we will hear more of the same BS that we have been hearing for a couple of weeks now, more "Tresselspeak". The thing is this week he cant say that he saw some improvement on the field because you know what, there wasnt any. We have been gradually regressing the last 3 weeks and right now it looks like we are free falling towards mediocrity this year.

I honestly dont think Zwick looked one week away from leading this offense either.

The thing is this should be clearly evident to JT , the only things that have stayed constant his entire time here has been himself, Blowman, and Daniels. Hell the scheme is the same too, and it really hasnt worked yet so I dont understand why he hasnt tried to change it. Speaking of Daniels, is he not the QB coach? Have we had a single QB actually get better from year to year since he has been here? I know he has had a great past as an Assistant Coach, but if he has improved Zwick and Smith since they have stepped on this campus, then maybe those 2 were greatly overrated to begin with.

You pretty much nailed everything OH8 but I would like to add my 2 cents worth. As bad as the OL line is I do not see any improvement under Bollman, and with the "loyalty" of JT I see these same players playing until they graduate and the freshman we have now will be juniors and we will go through the same old bullshit excuse of we don't have any experience.

Freshmen that are good enough should play and I'm sure we have a few who are good enough. Many other schools are very seccessful at this and it would be VERY helpful in the recruting if a young man knew he had a chance to play as a freshman.

GO BUCKS, AND GO BOLLMAN (REALLY GO BOLLMAN).
