Observations from the Barcalounger - Northwestern 2004

We were out coached.

Snyder plays too soft, had a poor game plan, and didn't adjust.

We need on O line and a running back.

The TV replay from here showeed that Zwick had the ball knocked out
by one of his own players.

I thought in the second half the O looked OK.
But we could use a more open offense.

We can't convert a third down with any consistancy.

Once again a Mr. Football not good enough for us beat our ass.

Once again we let ourselves look past someone.

I started thinking we were in trouble when I did the Top Ten Blog last week .....
NW QB #2 in the country..... that means he has an arm and some receivers .....

Bucks D in the middle of the pack ... despite playing Cinci and Marshall.

Talk on all the boards about Wisconsin ...
three weeks before we play them ....
As we over look NW

Smith pops off and adds a distraction.

Now the Smith supporters willl want him to start next week.

We have the deepest D anyone can remember ... and we can't stop NW.

Time to go drown my troubles in a Diet Coke .....

Hey Milli .... how do I make a Black & Tan ???????????????????????

The NC thought just bit the dust ..... with multiple one loss teams .... we are outa luck.

Perhaps we can play USC in the Rose Bowl ....
If we can make some adjustments somewhere.

Is it my turn?

All I have is questions.

Why does Brandon Joe get only 3-4 carries?

Why does Ross fall backwards when he is hit and Pittman and Joe still get 3 extra yards after they're hit?

Why isn't Ross sitting on the bench?

Why don't we feed the ball to Pittman when he is in there?

Why are we in shotgun on 3rd and 1?

Why is a "wing and a prayer" pass into a double covered Roy Hall, our best pass play?

Why did we only rush 4 and many times, only 3 guys at this dink and dunk offense?

Why do we sit back in this god awful zone all night when we can man up with nearly anybody we ever play?

Why, when we are in this god awful zone, do all the defenders stare at the QB instead of covering the guy in their zone?

That 3rd and 11 they converted, we rushed 3 people? And there's still no sign of a Buckeye anywhere near their reciever? Are you kidding me? Why is Simon Fraser being dropped into coverage? jeezus!

Why do we not throw over the top when they have their whole defense 3 yards from the line of scrimmage?

Can we ever make a team pay when they bring their whole defense up?

Why can we win 1st and 2nd down defensively, but not get off the field even on 3rd and 11?

Why are we in shotgun in 1st and goal?

Why can't we catch gimme interceptions?

Why was there not one single defensive adjustment from the first half to the second?

Why is Zwick taking 15 yard sacks?

How did I know that they would run the same 5-6 plays all night, but our defense didn't?

When did a WR screen become so difficult to read and stop?

Why is there always 1-2 scUM fans around?

Why aren't we allowed to hit them with a beer bottle?

Why! Why! Why!

OK, I'm done

TallIndian,
Do you think it was mostly our Defense that lost it for OSU or the Offense ?? Not trying to be contrary , just asking ?? Yes our defense had a bad day too but WOW they were out on the feild all day long.
I think that OSU, as a whole, will do only as well as our Offense and in particular to how Justin Zwick does and matures. The offense had no comand of the clock, the feild or anything. They were 3 and out most of the game until the very end. Yea some of it was play calling but he also didn't show that he could handle the Extra plays yet.
I still have faith though. No young, new QB does well at first. When he does WOW ... and the "other" running backs coming up are promising.

Buckeyenation is 110% correct. It's time to forget about loyalty and put the best players on the field and start trying to score points instead of Lydell left, Lydell right, a five yard pass when we need ten, or go for the bomb and then punt and play defense, also known as Tressel ball. Our defensive brain Dantonio (sp) is gone now and we never did have one on offense so now we suck on both sides of the ball. This is "OSU" we have both talent and pride, let's get someone to coach it.
I'm not a great fan of southern football but if you want to see offense tune in sometime.

im about fucking sick of the word tresselball too

I am tired of the idea that 'mistake free' offense somehow is the same thing as 'ineffective' offense.

We offered Jeff Backes, he chose to go to Northwestern.

Backes is a senior seeing his first serious playing time. And he is at Corner because he couldn't play RB at NU. Do we have a corner we would like to trade for Backes?

We were out coached.

Very much so - but we only had two weeks to prepare.

We can ding the RBs and the QB and the line, but THIS is JTs team. He did the recruiting based on his needs and wants. He built the team and the coaching staff. Whatever this turns out to be - and this was only one game - he owns it.

The other side of that is that the senior class is made up of kids JT recruited on short notice and Cooper's redshits. We don't have a lot of talent in this senior class.

Finally - I always thought the lenght of a thread was related to the fist post and how much it stimulated the thinking of posters to come. Glad to see I did such a good job with this one.

Typical Responses

These are the typical responses from the nation when we lose a game. Do we not remember that the whole 2002 season was like this - lack-luster offense, bend-but-don't-break defense and good special teams. The big difference is that Jenkins caught every ball thrown to him down the stretch and Krenzel never took a sack in a tight situation. I saw a lot of good things last night to build on for the rest of the season and next year. If any of you posters actually thought this was a Big Ten and National Championship contender, you need to stop smoking whatever you are smoking. Our defense made some big plays and gave up some big plays (missed several interceptions & got killed on the screen to the weak side) and Zwick looked very good at times and very bad at other times (typical first year player). Play calling, I believe was more open than in the past two years but we did not execute when we needed. Don't except miracles this year. Only hope for improved performance. Northwestern has an experienced team that has not lost by much in their three losses this year. Remember that their kicker missed many field goals in their losses. We simply got beat by a good team that wanted it more and executed a lot better last night. Please would Andy Geiger not schedule any more away Saturday night Big Ten games in the future. (Or at least someone at ESPN do us a favor and schedule us day games - I guess this could be considered part of an Ohio State conspiracy by Trev Alberts at ESPN to make us lose games so he can legitimately talk bad about us)

Oh by the way, is there a reason the posts have to involve profanity. If you can't think of an intellegent way to express yourself, don't post or simply go back to school. Maybe you went the University of Michigan school of intellegent speech? (I'll be waiting for the negative replys!!)

Go Bucks

Ohio state with no running game?

You can't be serious!!! To all the helpful recruiting gentlemen on the planet is there a stud fullback on our radar screen????

Because, I just reviewed the game watching Brandon S. and he can't block at all, just plain terrible. I know it is our M.O. to have a Mack Truck for a fullback to smash the linebackers. If you review the game it's the Wildcat backers in on a bunch of plays.

I also have to say I'm sorry Mr. Ross you have been provided a solid chance to be a star and it's time for a newcomer to play.

Side note; where is our attitude, fire, toughness and pride, I just haven't felt the passion from our team yet.

ok how about this for observation. one loss does not mean end of the world but i see several things happening. first of all this wont be our first loss this year because we are gonna keep getting waxed by short passing teams and good passing teams in the big-ten like purdue and um. how many times do we have to put up with receivers catching a ball in front of them because of that gawd awful zone for 20 yards on 3rd and 12. why recruit athletes for the secondary and not challenge em once in a while with some 1 on 1 coverage. that close to the vest D might work if we had any kind of running game but 3 and out on offense means our D is gonna be back out there again letting teams march down the field again in the bend and dont break that may have worked in the past but cant work with our current lack of offense. speaking of lack of running game i see a direct relationship between who coaches the o line and who is at least partially responsible for calling offensive plays. how many times do we have to see ross run into the back of the o line because there is no hole and he has no clue how to hit one anyways (remember archie et al running through gaping holes in the past). only reason mo ever made any yards was he could make the first guy miss and/or bounce off the pack and make 5 yards out of nothing. secondly our inexperienced d line is putting no pressure on q back. we may as well let the studd linebackers blitz on every play if all we are gonna play is that stupid zone. any q back is gonna pick us apart if he has nobody in his face and nobody withing 5 yards of his receivers. and finaly observation is i love what tressel has done for osu football but is he gonna get any offensive recruits if we continue to have rediculous play calling on offense. why would a receiver like holmes even come to osu knowing he will get the ball at most thrown to him 6 times a game from a q-back who is never gonna be one the top 10 in the nation recruit wise. maybe we get a stud running back who is actually interested in playing football on saturdays and not sundays and he transforms our mediocore at best offense into something other teams fear and things will be good again in the buckeye nation. who knows maybe we have one already in pittman or haws but ross aint the answer.

Sigh

I have to agree with everyone making the statement that Bollman sucks and Snyder isn't aggressive enough. Everyone knows Ross isn't very good, eventually the Coaching staff figured that out. We have the talent, Zwick is playing as expected. We can't open the offense up until we move the ball on the ground. That won't happen until Bollman is fired or moved to another responsibility. I also agree that Snyder should be in the box.

I suppose the loss was necessary because now we're completely aware of how bad we are. There is no need for diluted National Championship hopes.

Your first post certainly stimulated me and summed up the situation quite well I think. :)
