Kevin Wilson (HC Tulsa)

I’ll leave it at this, the offense is really good now, but it has not played its best game yet. This is less a criticism of the current play and more a statement about the talent, coaching prowess and potential that exists. I’ll chime back in when it has played 4 full quarters close to its full potential.

I'm a bit curious as to just how short of its full potential the offense played in generating the following 4 quarter statistics: http://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=400935381

I know he didn't throw the picks, but he shit the bed with his play calling today. Way to quick to abandon the run and really just put to much of the game on JT to win it. Where were the plays with Berry leading the run and when are we ever going to see Weber and JK in the backfield together? Seemed like way to few RPOs today. Players just seem to disappear in this offense from game to game with his play calling. Mack has had some great games and I don't think he was targeted but 1 time today.

What Can Players Do to Get Better Over the Summer?

Kevin-Wilson-1170x780.jpg

With spring football in the rear-view mirror now, the process of getting better doesn’t stop. The Ohio State football program still wakes up every morning and puts in the work to get better.

The biggest difference over the summer is that the coaches can’t be nearly as involved, especially on the field. But players are still fine-tuning, be it group work on the field, film study, or weight room.

Another area put to good use during the offseason is self study. After all, it’s a lot easier to correct your mistakes when you know exactly what they are.

“For example right now, my players are getting ready to do a personal study and Jake Hausmann has every play that he played,” offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson explained at the end of spring practice. “And he’s going to be able to watch himself run this play and say I’m good at this play or not.”

The players will have cut-ups placed on their iPads so that they have access to it 24/7. They can examine every detail and see precisely what they are doing wrong, which then makes it much easier to know how to fix it.

That’s also where the summer comes in. The redshirt sophomore Hausmann is no different than any other player. The ones who emerge during the season are generally the ones who were able to take their summertime tools and get better.

“And then [ask] ‘What can I do without football practice to get better this summer at this play?’ And maybe he can and maybe he can’t,” Wilson said. “Some things without pads and helmets you can’t get better at.”

Year Two Brings Increased Expectations for Kevin Wilson

In their first year as offensive coordinators at Ohio State, Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day helped lead the way to a Big Ten-high 41.1 points per game and 506 yards of total offense per game.

The yardage mark is the third-highest in Ohio State history, behind 2013 and 2014. And the 41.1 points per game is fourth-most in school history, behind 2013, 2014, and 1969.

Not bad for a pair of coordinators still feeling their way around the Ohio State football program.

Things are different in year two, however. And not just because 4-year starter J.T. Barrett is no longer at quarterback.

“A lot more comfort level with expectations of drills, knowing the players, what they can and can’t do, knowing the coaches and their strengths and weaknesses, and how to work together,” Wilson said this spring on the differences of year two compared to year one.

For Wilson, it wasn’t just about figuring out his players’ strengths and weaknesses. It was also about finding his own strengths and weaknesses as an assistant coach.

“Last year, kind of figuring things out and at the end of the day as a guy that has been an assistant and head coach, you’re working hard to give Coach Meyer what he wants because he’s the head coach,” Wilson explained.

Last season was the first time Kevin Wilson was an assistant coach since the 2010 season. It wasn’t a new experience, but it did take some getting used to.

“One of my great assistant coaches said my job is assistant coach, that means I assist the coach,” he said. “And that’s the way I took my job. I’m trying to assist and give Coach Meyer what he wanted.”

Meyer wanted a more explosive passing attack. He got the Buckeyes’ first 3,000-yard passer since Joe Germaine in 1998. He also got a school-record 36 touchdown passes from J.T. Barrett.

After having just four pass plays of 40 yards or more in 2016, Ohio State led the Big Ten with 11 such plays in 2017.

Meyer got what he asked for, including a stretch of six-consecutive games of 300 yards passing for the Buckeyes. In those six games, Ohio State threw 25 touchdowns to just one interception.

“I thought we did a good job, all of us together,” Wilson said. “And as we’ve changed some titles and things, we’re all working hard together with this same group, that hopefully this year — we had a very strong offense — hopefully this year we can be more dynamic, and that’s the goal.”

Does anyone else find it strange that Kevin Wilson isn't being mentioned for any head coaching jobs? He was a hell of a coach at Indiana. We all assumed it would be a 2-3 year lease until the scandal washed over and he would move on. I wonder if it was too much to overcome and needs more time or if he just realized he'd rather not do the HC thing again. I'd fucking love it if that were the case.
If we were to loose Urban in a few years and Day takes over I can't think of anything better than Wilson remaining the OC with Hartline sticking around.
