CHICAGO — Nick Swisher’s power surge has been a boost for Cleveland as the Indians try for their first postseason berth since 2007.

Swisher homered from both sides of the plate for the 13th time in his career during the Indians’ 7-1 win against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday night.

Swisher tied the major league record set by former New York Yankees teammate Mark Teixeira, and the Indians pulled within a half-game of Tampa Bay and Texas in the AL wild-card race.

“The way things are kind of going down the stretch, you’ve got to step your game up in situations like this,” Swisher said. “Seasons like this don’t come around very often. We have a chance to make it into the playoffs and that’s what we’re doing.”

Slowed by injuries earlier this season, Swisher has five home runs in 13 games during September.

Batting right-handed against starter Chris Sale, Swisher homered off the left-hander leading off a four-run sixth. Asdrubal Cabrera’s three-run homer made it 6-0.

Switching around to the left side against right-hander Ramon Troncoso in the ninth, Swisher hit his 20th home run of the season.

He now has 20 career multihomer games, as well.

“It’s pretty cool having a major league record for something,” Swisher said. “I don’t care what it’s for. Just to have that — especially to share that with my boy Mark Teixeira who I love dearly — it’s just crazy. It just happens to be a lucky day.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-- Seen and heard at U.S. Cellular Field.

Clubhouse confidential: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher was one of six players chosen by fan voting as a finalist for the 2013 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, which is sponsored by the players association. Adrian Gonzalez, Carlos Beltran, Raul Ibanez, Mariano Rivera and Chase Utley are the others.

Their names will go on the ballot for the 2013 Players Choice Awards that will be delivered to all players Tuesday. The award honors a player for his contribution to his team on the field and charitable works off it.

"It's a great honor, capping off what we hope is a great season for us in the end," said Swisher.

Miller, who died in 2012, turned the players association into one of the strongest unions in the country.

CLEVELAND, Ohio –- After another victory over downtrodden Houston Saturday, the night burned bright at Progressive Field from the fireworks Nick Swisher paid for.

The replay board carried highlights of Swisher and all his teammates. Ohio State fight songs roared over the loudspeakers in honor of the Indians top Buckeye, followed by the alma mater. Fan cams captured the joyous times baseball can bring in enormous close-ups. The sky boomed and blazed.

It was probably the next-best thing to supplying fireworks with his bat.

No matter what his statistics are, though, if you spend a little time around Swisher, you will go away thinking, rhetorically anyway, that he is where amazing happens. That is true, win or lose. That is true whether he has carried a loud bat, or given a shout-out to the fans after the game (as he did Saturday), or put $15,000 worth of smoke and noise on his tab after his salute.

You can’t stop Swisher’s exuberance, you can only hope to contain it. Swisher wakes up naturally caffeinated and spends the day finding amazing things to observe and then declare how amazed he is to see them. He walks in a manner that is not a strut, but that possesses swagger nonetheless. Baseball is his source of brotherhood, the clubhouse is his fraternity, and it is no surprise that he calls nearly everyone who passes by his locker “bro.”

Mark Podolski: Nick Swisher's generosity deserves praise

Nick Swisher’s 2013 season hasn’t exactly been a bang for the Indians’ buck.
The switch-hitter signed a four-year, $56 million contract in the offseason, but Swisher’s production has been OK with 20 home runs and 58 RBI with six regular-season games remaining.
Still, on Saturday night, Swisher took it upon himself to allow the fans at Progressive Field to enjoy a bang for their buck.
Swisher and his wife, Joanna, paid for a postgame fireworks show. They didn’t have to do that, which was impressive mostly because it’s not every day a professional athlete looks out for the fans.
Swisher seems like a cool guy. After Saturday, that’s confirmed.

He did, but not until after he got mobbed and punched repeatedly (especially by Kipnis lol). He caught his breath and then was like "oh yeah I almost forgot! O-H-I-O!"

edit: not sure if you were serious or not - I didn't watch the posted video but saw it live.
Yes, I was serious...thanks for the info.
