Offensive coordinator question

ASU just fired their OC because our offense sucks. What type of OC would you want to come to tOSU if you were looking to hire one? An OC that runs a spread or a traditional NFL offense? An old guy who is proven to develop players but sucks at recruiting, or a younger guy who would probably be good at recruiting but not as experienced developing players?

Jim Bollman is our de jure OC, and Jim Tressel is our de facto OC. If Bollman retires, the answer to your question hinges on whether we get another nominal OC, or Tress gives up play-calling. It is one of the most over-repeated discussions on this site.

I think that's too broad of a question. If there was ever a chance in years past to get someone like Josh McDaniels, he's young, could probably recruit and develop players... which is also why he's a Head Coach in the NFL.

Rich Olson was a has been that Erickson was comfortable with.

Personally all in all I like younger guys, as I think the game changes rather quickly, and you need a young innovator and someone that can relate to younger players, which helps with recruiting.

Traditional NFL offense with spread wrinkles to suit your players, heavily experienced in developing players. Tressel, Taver Johnson, and many others on this staff are already amazing recruiters.

Honestly I would be satisfied with promoting Darrell Hazell to Offensive Coordinator. Just a new spark, but no need to go and make a big splash of a change.

Does anyone know if Hazell is calling plays still? I remember he was during the IU game?

He does every now and then. Tressel gives him the opportunity to call probably 25% of critical games and most if not all of games against the likes of Indiana.

It seems as though he's being prepped to take that role soon, with the rumors that Bollman is going to retire. Which probably means that we have to find someone to coach the offensive line, or we can role Peterson over into that role.

Still leaves us with one available coaching position either way, if coach Bollman decides to hang it up.

I also would prefer a younger guy who can relate to todays college football player and recruit well. A guy that can also be open minded and change offensive game plans as personell changes over the years. Young guys have a lot of fire and determination to move up.

I think older coaches are too stuck in their ways and some probably haven't kept up with what entices recruits to play for them. Probably less fire and less likely to move up and be the man since they are already old.

What scares me is ASU is looking at older guys like Tim Lappano, Mike Martz and some other old guys to possibly bring in as OC. Erickson's old cronies. I want some young blood and new ideas.

Offensive Coordinator

To answer this question, a few truisms about football must come into play.

1. Those who run the ball successfully usually win.
2. You must score when you run the ball---touchdowns are better.
3. Must be competent defensively.
4. If you have a great defense, never do something on offense to leave them on the short field.
5. Use the talent you have and use them to the best of THEIR abilities.
6. You win with people. I think I heard that somewhere.
7. Win the surest way.

All of that being said, I want an OC who can make the offense score every time, throw the ball without any interceptions and with big plays. Have over 300 yards passing and over 200 yards running. No turnovers. Score every two minute drill. Win the time of possession with a t 70-30 percent ratio. Have 4 first team All Americans and a Heisman trophy winner every 3 years.

Is that all? Missing sarcasm font?

Well then, looks like we're set at OC.
