Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

I cannot know believe that no one has posted this but the Monsters have won the Calder cup 4-0 and in the clinching game they had the highest attendance figure of any "professional" hockey team in Ohio ever. I guess there is some talk that their goalie might be the backup goalie appear in Columbus next year plus they have a couple other players who were very high draft choices.

Pierre-Luc Dubois with the 3rd overall pick. A bit surprising.....seemed like the other Finn was the popular choice in the mock drafts.

RIP JLD.

Basically they could had traded down a few spots and picked up Dubois
If you read some of the coverage from Sportsnet in Canada, the Jackets could have only moved back 1 spot to 4 as Vancouver at 5 was set to take Dubois. While I am not sure who is a better player between Puljujarvi and Dubois, taking him at 3 is not nearly as big a reach as when Howson took a second tier Canadian junior center named Ryan Johansen. Johanasen played for Penicton in the 2nd tier of junior hockey. I will trust that Jarmo and Co know what they want and they found what the wanted in this Dubois kid. The more puzzling thing is that they traded Rychel for what amounts to very little.

I noticed from the Dispatch article on the Rychel trade that his agent is Kurt Overhardt, whom JD and Jarmo probably both still despise after going through all the Johansen drama with him.

Well tonight is the night.....the first game of what will undoubtedly be another disappointing Blue Jacket season.

If you are going to the game you might want to leave a little early. Traffic is expected to be worse than usual. Obama
will be holding a fundraiser at the Convention Center.

Obama visit, Blue Jackets opener could tie up Arena District

Projected lineup:

Jenner-Dubinsky-Atkinson
Saad-Gagner-Foligno
Hartnell-Wennberg-Bjorkstrand
Calvert-Karlsson-Anderson

Werenski-Jones
Murray-Savard
Johnson-Nutivaara

Bobrovsky
McElhinney

Newer names are bolded.

Gone are the familiar faces/names of Boll & Tyutin (hooray!) and last-year's only significant FA signing Gregory Campbell was waived and is now up in Cleveland. There are a lot of familiar names, but some new ones popping up, too. Sam Gagner was signed almost as an after-thought but it sounds like he has really performed well in camp & pre-season. Bjorkstrand & Anderson both appeared in 12 games with Columbus last year, but spent most of their time with the Cleveland nee Lake Erie Monsters last year. Bjorkstrand went 4G, 4A, +6 in those 12 games and I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do.

On the blue line, Werenski is a rookie in his first full-year out of UM. He joined the Monsters for their play-off run last year and was almost immediately the best d-man on the ice. He's going to be good....maybe really good. Nutivaara is a former 7th round pick who has come out of nowhere. I know next-to-nothing about him, but if he keeps Dalton Prout off the ice, I'm fine with it.

It sounds like Bob is healthy and looked good in the World Cup playing for Russia, so that's a very good sign.

This team should be better than last year's but who knows how much? If Bob can stay healthy and playing well, I can see them making the playoffs.

Nutivaara is interesting, I read he was considered a reach pick even in the 7th round but has show signs of good skating and playmaking ability. He was one of the top defensemen in the Finnish league last year.

Good to see new faces on D regardless. Hopefully Werenski pans out and they arent as shitty.
