Official: Leinart coming back (merged)

IronBuckI said:
Has Leinart even been hit in the last two years? I don't know if he has a whole hell of a lot to worry about, as far as injuries are concerned.

You don't have to get hit to blow out a knee.

What if he has a relatively mediocre year? There are too many things that can go wrong, and really there is nothing more for him to play for. I think his decision to stay is idiotic, to put it mildly. No matter what he does next year, his stock can't get any better, but it definitely can get worse. Christ, he could get a $25M signing bonus without playing a single frickin' down. If he gets hurt next season, he may still get drafted but he'll lose tons of cash. Just have him ask Willis McGahee...

Let's see how he likes his senior year when someone cleans his clock. Again, way, waaaayyyy, too much to lose and nothing to gain.

Hell, if he likes college so much, he could go back after he's retired from the NFL...if he thinks he has college chicks falling all over him now, wait until he goes back to USC when he's in his early 30s and worth $100M or so.

Yeah, even if he was a buckeye id say he was stupid for this, if you are first round you leave, a top 3 pick.. thats just silly... that is your whole career and more money than most of us will ever see you are risking.. Sure college is fun and you are a super star, but being a millionaire would be pretty damn nice too.. you would feel pretty damn stupid if you go hurt bad this year or chow leaves and you have a down year and it costs you a few million so you could be the big man on campus one more year..

I don't watch USC play much, but I did see the UCLA and the NC games. Leinart seemed to be very good with accuracy, but his passes do not look like they have much velocity to them (like Troy Smith). I just did not see any passes where he just put the ball with authority between defenders. May be he didn't need to because he is so good with his touches. May be Chow made the play calls to suit the offense's strengh and so never really test Leinart's arm strengh. If indeed he does not have a strong arm, how good will he be in the NFL? Again, I only saw two games...may be that is not enough to question his arm strengh. I look forward to hear the opinion of those who have seen him play more. WStripe, what do you think?

I think it's a smart move by Leinart.
I know there's always a possibilty that he could get injured after a huge hit from those smashmouth Pac-10 LB's, but if he went to the NFL and got hurt, what was he to do then? He would get a better paying job with a degree than he would without one. He's thinking about his future post-NFL and/or post-college.

Leinart's numbers should be better next year. If USC goes undefeated in the regular season, somebody's going to have to have an incredible year to win the Heisman over him.

leinart's numbers were about the same as white's and a few other qbs proposed for Heisman. 'should be better' is a foggy notion. he's just as likely to break his ankle in spring practice as he is to win heisman. only way he'll do significantly better is, say, 40 TD passes with 2 ints. even then, the team could lose a big one, or Utah's guy do the same thing he and Leinart did this season, make the west a real market for tv, and that could be the ballgame.

Buckeye513, you get my early nomination for "Dumbass Post of 2005":

Uh, how about spend his $25M signing bonus and his salary for the first year? :roll1:

You've got to be shitting me. Once he signs an NFL contract, Einstein, he'll never have to work another day in his life, and live 10 times more comfortably than any of us on this board ever will while doing so.

With the offense coming back, I'll say a few hundred more yards than the 3000 he had before the Orange Bowl, and at least 5 more TD's than the 28 he had before the bowl. And, in my post, I qualified it with the team remaining undefeated. Any less foggy now?

Alot of people are going to play the "integrity" card on this issue, that Matt showed alot of "integrity" by deciding to return for his senior season.

Michael Doss showed "intregrity' by returning for his senior season, passing up roughly 3 Million in the process. His desire to win a NC was inspiring and probably the catalyst to the whole 2002 season.

But Matt? Let's face it, this is just plain idiotic. 2 NC's and a Heisman in his pocket, what else is left for him? I used to be disgusted at athletes who always said that it "isn't about the money" then signed with the team that offered the most. Like Milwood stated, this guy is pissing away what would be a signing bonus in the neighorhood of 25 Million. MAKE IT ABOUT THE MONEY, MATT!!! Jesus Christ, folks can talk all they want about respecting the fact that he wants a degree. Well, good for him. Let's see him suffer a career-ending injury next year. But Hey, he'll have his degree, and hopefully he'll spend the rest of his life living pretty good on his $50,000 salary. For those of you who resepect this move, go and talk to Matt in the year 2505 (500 years from now) and ask him if he felt he made the right move working the past 500 years to make what he would have made by simply signing his name on a piece of paper in 2005.

When did it become illegal to stay in school for your senior year?

He has ALMOST nothing to prove, except that they basically have a free ticket to the NC game since they play no one.

Why not come back and have a shot at being the only team to have a threepeat? NFL scouts aren't stupid, and they'll pay him the same now as if he comes back, has a stellar year, and then stumbles in teh bowl game.

I couldn't agree more BT. Living on the west coast I see every Saturday how poor the rest of the pac-10 is. Blowing through them shouldn't be hard. If both can get to the Rose Bowl this smacks of 2002... "poor, overmatched Buckeyes face dominant USC". We can only hope.
