Official: Leinart coming back (merged)

I couldn't agree more BT. Living on the west coast I see every Saturday how poor the rest of the pac-10 is. Blowing through them shouldn't be hard. If both can get to the Rose Bowl this smacks of 2002... "poor, overmatched Buckeyes face dominant USC". We can only hope.
Lance Mitchell, is that you?

All I know is that since October of 2002, we've beaten every OOC opponent by at least 10 points:

2002
Notre Dame by 31
Iowa by 21
2003
Auburn by 23
BYU by 17
Hawaii by 29
Notre Dame by 31
Michigan by 14
2004
VaTech by 11
Colorado State by 49
BYU by 32
Notre Dame by 31
Oklahoma by 36

In that same span, we've had several close calls with P10 teams:
2002
Lost to Wazzu by 3
Beat Cal by 2
2003
lost to Cal by 3
2004
Beat Stanford by 3
Beat Cal by 6
Beat Oregon State by 8
Beat UCLA by 5

You make a good argument. I think, however, you will agree that the pac-10 has been weak the last three years. I'm not trying to take anything away from the Trojans, they are clearly a superior team. Outside of Cal this year though they haven't really had any competition. Lack of motivation, and that bizzaro fog game in Corvalis, could account for the small margins of victory. All in all, I like their chances next year.

I guess Matt had no interest in going to San Francisco eh? or Miami??? I don't question him coming back for his senior year. A QB (especially a pocket passer) has a slim chance of getting seriously hurt. That chance is a ton less than a RB, WR, DE, CB, LB and every other position except Kicker & Punter.

The only thing I can question is the situation. Matt should KNOW he will be taken by either San Francisco or Miami. Both GREAT situations for a young QB. These are not normal Top pick teams and you can feel assured they will be back at the top in a short manner. I would hate to see who will get the top pick next year. That is why he should of come out. If Leinart pulls an Eli Manning next year because he doesn't want to play for the Arizona Cardinals or Detroit Lions or some other less desirable situation then he has no one else to blame but himself.

I wish him luck...

Now about this USC thing... it really does smell of Miami of 2002. USC finally proved themselves. Remember this year they had that chip on the shoulder because it was a split championship last year. Plus the Pac-10 is still the 5th deepest conference, very similar to the old Big East with Miami and everyone else and some really bad teams and the rest just average. After 2 Rings in a row that hunger fades away just enough to take the edge off if the other team brings the intensity. So I can see if USC makes the Rose Bowl (only if a major upset happens) I can see an upset happening, I just hope that other team in the Rose Bowl is Ohio State

Look, some of you guys seem to get the wrong idea here, we dont think leinhart is a bad guy bcuz of this, he is just making a rash decision based on emotion... those of you who said he should be doing it for the degree.. he is going to be a top 3 pick.. that kinda money will put him through a docterate course about 2000 times.. and those that said he will make the same next year regardless of a bad game... well thats assuming he doesnt blow out a knee or fuck up his arm..

what the kid did was noble and very idealistic and thats respectable, but that doesn't make it smart or a good career move.. now HOPEFULLY he wont get hurt and he can move on to the NFL next year and this will be a non-issue in his life.. but he just jepordized his ability to make the millions that will support him and his children and his children's children because he wanted to stay at USC one more year.. Good luck Matt, I truely hope this doesn't turn out bad for you..

While the argument can be made that the Pac-10 is the 5th deepest conference, comparing them to the old Big East is too much of a stretch. They don't have anybody as bad as either Rutgers or Temple.

In fact, the Pac-10's best argument (besides USC's strength) is that they have no true weak sisters. The worst teams in the league recently have been Stanford and Arizona. They're not truly bad teams. Washington was terrible this year, but that's a solid program that will bounce back.

What's all this talk about Leinart staying another year to get his degree? Isn't he supposed to finish his degree requirements this semester?

I've said it before, but I think he's just scared to leave Chow's cocoon, since he'll never have this kind of success again. A QB without the confidence to take it to the next level, when his stock is this high, will never make it in the NFL. I hope this move pisses off the SC QB pipeline and starts the backlash against PC as a recruiter...

Why not come back and have a shot at being the only team to have a threepeat? NFL scouts aren't stupid, and they'll pay him the same now as if he comes back, has a stellar year, and then stumbles in teh bowl game.

Yeah, and what if:

1.) USC fails to three-peat
2.) He gets hurt
3.) Has a bad season

If #1 happens, he still will probably get the same amount he'd get now, but he'll also have lost a year's worth of salary (maybe as much as $5M). If #2 and/or #3 happens, then all bets are off and he's lost a shit load of money. As Dubs pointed out above, Doss came back to get a NC and only passed up a $3M contract, while Leinart already has 1 1/2 NCs and is passing up as much as $50M ($25M signing bonus and $5M per year for 5 years).

Sorry, but his decision is flat out stupid. I hope I'm not proved right.

Hey "meat-thump"

Don't ever assume to know what I am thinking. Did I ever express "disgust" over Leinhart? I just think the kid is being a fool. God Bless him, I hope shit works out real good for him in the future, he seems like a good kid. But his stock will never be higher than it is now.

Leinart has got to be crazy. Right now his stock is as high as it will ever get, he cant do any better then what he is right now being the Heisman trophy winner and the NC QB. He would have went #1 to San Francisco too, oh well I guess he is must have listened to old Petey who told the press that he didnt think any of his players should leave early according to his NFL "people".
He's been saying he'll come back before the season even began. This was a decision made entirely on Leinart's part.

Also in response to many on this thread....

Matt's decision wasn't one of business nor was it one in terms of draft stock or anything relating to the NFL. In that case, yes, he would of made the dumb decision. But you guys are thinking through your own eyes and not Matt's. Matt has always expressed a slight discontent for the NFL way before his stock climbed; he isn't as enchanted with it as other players. On top of that he is the king of college football, has achieved celebrity status in L.A., the man on campus, and will be done with school this semester.

I really believe he enjoys his time in college and truly cherishes college football. He's received all kinds of advice from NFL players, and most of them have told him to really enjoy his last few years in college. I personally think Matt understands this and puts it over being the top pick in the draft.

He has the opportunity to have another year in college where he says he is living the "dream". Even if his stock drops next year and consequently loses millions, I'd bet that he would say that he doesn't regret a single thing.

Why criticize? $ isn't everything to everybody.

I am glad Leinart is coming back. College football needs role models like Leinart and Doss who decide that $ isn't everything in this world. I know that if I was given the chance to play for The Ohio State University, I would stay for 6 years if the choice arose. There really are people in this world who have old world ideals. Why do we feel a need to pee on their corn flakes? Leinart seems to be a really nice kid. I admit, part of me wanted Matt to leave, because it would give the Bucks a better shot at a NC next year, but the cards have been played and I think we will still contend. Congrats to USC and to Matt Leinart.
