BIG TEN OFFICIATING IS A BIG PROBLEM. Normally, I'd rather fist a garbage disposal than listen to a Michigan Man bitch about officiating, but today I am sharing this in solidarity because Rich Eisen is absolutely correct here – Big Ten officiating is ass.

He's totally right. This isn't an isolated thing or just a few random issues, and it's certainly not just affecting one team. There are terrible, egregious missed calls, blown calls, late calls, no calls and phantom calls every single week at a rate I have never seen before in my entire fandom

Just last week, Illinois almost got screwed out of a massive upset because of some late-game bullshit from the stripes. This week, Michigan couldn't catch a break on any close call, and got the typical see-no-holding treatment in the trenches.

And Eisen said it's coming for Ohio State next, but if you watched Saturday night's game, it already did – the Buckeyes just won anyway.

But the thing is, if you want something to change, you've got to call it out. And what we're seeing across the Big Ten this season is so far from acceptable, so I think it's important to acknowledge this garbage when you see it, whether it's your team, your opponent, or just a random Big Ten game.

And it's okay to accept that other teams get screwed by the refs, too. We don't have to make it a contest about who gets screwed more, or pull out the "what about this call against my team!"

Hot take: All bad calls are bad. Let's get this fixed.

Here is the thing. It is tough to stomach when your team appears to be getting shafted. But I would suggest that the games have never been better officiated. The issue is that with 10 camera replays and all the passing the game is just way more complicated to ref than 20 years ago. And the rules have been tweaked to try to have clarity because things have gotten so tight and they are trying to eliminate any grey area in the rules. At the end of the day a team might have to over come some really questionable calls or no calls to win a game. I mean PI and Defensive holding could be called every damn play on most team.

I guess my main point is that while it seems like an issue to focus on, as a team or fan base is useless to spend much time on it. Focus on making plays and getting better. And have the AD and coaches talk to the league on how to get better officiating. But stay focused on what you can control. If you feed into the idea that the officials are against you as a team the players will begin to allow that to creep into their minds and adversely affect their play. Like it doesn't matter if I give 100% the refs are gonna screw us anyway.....ect.

I've been watching this game for over 50 years, and while I will concede that holding is easier to see for the fans than it used to be, but not any easier for the officials, the non-calls in Ohio State's last two games are right up there with Wisconsin in the 90s for the worst I've ever seen. While it seems from where I sit, separated by time and the difference between standard def (or C-deck) and 4K tv, that what I've seen the last two Saturdays is the worst ever, I will concede that I shouldn't try to make the comparison.

The point is that Indiana and Penn State got away with stuff that I've seen called as holding on almost (at least) everybody through almost (at least) any era for over half a century.

Ohio State won both games, and I know how this looks; complaining about officials has always been a very bad look. But it really has gotten to the point where it is ruining the game. It seems to me that the sport would be better if they would publicly announce the firings of officials for poor officiating, and it should be done immediately, before they get to ruin another game. A big part of the problem is that players know they're going to get away with it, so they do it more and more blatantly. A few public firings would make it clear that the gravy train is over for flat-footed offensive linemen.

And don't even get me started on #9 for Penn State. He was called for several penalties, but he held and interfered to the point of cheating all night long. The B1G Network came all over themselves talking about how he "made himself a lot of money". If I'm an NFL scout, I scratch that guy off my list right now. Even in the NFL, the stuff he was getting away with on Saturday night gets called.

Daddy- what I will say is that the League needs to do a clear reset. Just like in the NFL and in College Wrestling they need to produce a clear video clarifying what is what. Additionally they should send a set of refs to each teams practice in the Spring to clarify how the game is going to be called going into the next season. I know this probably happens but I think we all agree that things have seemingly gotta sideways. As I said in another post MSU was called for 17 fouls verse 3 in the Indiana game. Sorry but that doesn't even compute. So something has to change. But I still think that the whole replay and extra camera's have caused massive issues. Also looking at every play in super slo-mo does not make sense either. Like the whole holding thing with jerseys. Unless it actually slows a player down or effects the play is that holding. And if in real time you barely see it then it is not holding. THe game and players have gotten much faster the last 20-30 years and it is no joke to keep track of what is happening.

I agree with most of this

But what I'm talking about has nothing to do with the tugging of jerseys. Much of Penn State's holding was either hands around the wrist or forearm around the throat. Stuff that doesn't affect the play has seldom ever been called in the Big Ten and I wouldn't expect it to be called.

In the NBA you can almost call a foul on every play. I think it is getting very similar on college pass plays concerning holding on the OL and PI on the defense. There's grabbing, yanking, and pulling on almost every play. I have no idea how the referees decide when to call a penaily and not call a penalty. If they are only calling the penalties that they actually see then they are incompetent and should be fired. In many cases I do think they try to just even out the calls. Midway in the 3nd quarter they called a punt catching interference on Corn when Smith-Njigba caught the punt. All the fans booed and the announcers called the call "questionable". I told my wife that there's going to be some calls on Ohio State to even it out. Sure enough there was, Ohio State got a couple penalties called that stopped their drive and forced a punt. The bad news was that the score was 20-10 and had Ohio State scored on the drive and went up by 3 scores it would have been big.

Anyway I believe that some players are getting frustrated with the inconsistency of the calls:

“It’s annoying not getting calls sometimes, especially when I feel like they're blatant,” Smith said. “But I just keep playing, keep rushing. I don’t let that affect me or stop rushing or something like that, because then that’s the one rush I’m not locked in or not going 100 percent. I don’t really try to let it get to me. I say something to the ref one time, and then I just let it go, I just play my game. If it’s not falling in my hands and the call’s not going my way, then I’m fine, as long as I’m still making an impact.” ...Tyreke Smith
