Five-star recruit and mother welcome Urban Meyer back in-person
    ByBILL KURELIC 5 hours ago
Offensive tackle Paris Johnson from Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier committed to the Buckeyes in late June. SInce then he has been an almost non-stop recruiter for the Buckeyes. His work has included staying in contact with many top prospects around the country as well as making trips to Columbus to meet with prospects the Ohio State staff is recruiting.

Johnson was part of a huge Ohio State recruiting weekend in late July just before the start of the NCAA dead period. His work included welcoming in 2020 offensive lineman Geirean Hatchett from the state of Washington who was visiting Ohio State for the first time as part of the big recruiting weekend for the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-5 and 275-pound Hatchett is one of the top offensive linemen on the West Coast.

Johnson and his mother Monica Johnson were very supportive of Meyer as the committee appointed by Ohio State University investigated what Meyer knew in regards to domestic abuse claims against former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith by Smith’s former wife Courtney Smith.

And needless to say, Paris and Monica were very happy when the announcement was made that Meyer would remain as head coach of the Buckeyes. Meyer has been serving a suspension that still includes missing the next two Ohio State games. However, he was allowed to resume coaching the Buckeyes in practice starting Monday as well as all other duties including recruiting. And very happy to welcome Meyer back in-person on Monday were Paris and Monica Johnson. The two drove to Columbus on Monday afternoon along with Monica’s mother to welcome Meyer back. It was the first time Monica’s mother had met Meyer.

Johnson, who plays left-tackle, is a 5-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is the country’s No. 10 overall 2020 prospect, the No. 2 offensive tackle, and the No. 1 prospect in Ohio.

Meyer and his staff currently have six class of 2020 commitments. The six are quarterback Jack Miller, running back Darvon Hubbard, offensive tackles Johnson and Jake Wray, center/guard Luke Wypler, and defensive back Lejond Cavazos. It is a class that is currently ranked No. 3 in the country in the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings.

I’ve seen many 5 Star Tackles play against Colerain. First time I’ve ever seen one have no problems with Colerain’s speed rushers. Very impressive.

The LG for X (75) was also impressive. Cards were fortunate to come away with the win.

RECRUITING: PARIS JOHNSON JR., OHIO STATE'S TOP 2020 COMMIT, EXPLAINS WHY HE STUCK BY URBAN MEYER IN THE MIDST OF CONTROVERSY

On June 28, St. Xavier's Paris Johnson Jr. tweeted out a picture, a screenshot and three of the most powerful words he's ever written: "I'm staying home!!"

With scholarship offers on the table from Division I colleges across the nation – including the likes of Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Notre Dame – Johnson chose Ohio State.

“It is amazing to receive an opportunity to play for your home state team,” Johnson told Eleven Warriors upon his commitment. “They have an impressive tradition and culture.”

But a little over a month after committing to Ohio State, Johnson's college of choice saw its football program's tradition and culture fall under a seemingly never-ending shadow of controversy. When the college football community received word of Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer's three-game suspension in relation to the way he dealt with former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, Johnson says many other top-level programs reached out to him in an attempt to sway him from Columbus.

But as coaches and recruiters rushed in to coerce him into decommitting, the 6-foot-7, 285-pound offensive tackle reacted in a way he's all too familiar with: he stood his ground.

"I chose to keep my decision because I trust the Ohio State coaching staff and they treat me like family," Johnson said. "(Meyer) was important in my recruitment process because I liked the culture he established of striving to fully develop our genetic potential, as students and athletes. They also have a strong tradition of success."

Johnson's last visit to Ohio State came on Sept. 8, when the Buckeyes trampled Rutgers by a 52-3 final. That day, Meyer wasn't on the sidelines. Whenever Johnson returns to Ohio Stadium, his future teammates will have their leader back with them – Meyer returns this Saturday against Tulane.

"I am very excited he is back. He is a great coach, and even better person," Johnson said.

THE HURRY UP: PARIS JOHNSON JR. TALKS WITH WANDALE ROBINSON AND TREVOR KEEGAN, URBAN MEYER ADDRESSES RECRUITING PROGRESS AND A LOOK AT HOW BUCKEYE TARGETS PERFORMED FRIDAY

    PARIS LOBBIES FOR COLUMBUS

This past weekend's recruiting visits at Ohio State have been well documented. The Buckeyes hosted tons of prospective talent as they beat Indiana 49-26 to move to 6-0. However, what may not have been discussed is how current commits made an impression on the program's recruiting targets; namely Ohio State's top 2020 commit Paris Johnson.

After helping St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio) beat La Salle 42-7 Friday night, Johnson was in Columbus Saturday for yet another visit. While he and his mother Monica made their rounds during pregame warm-ups, he made it a point to stop and talk with 2019 four-star tackle Trevor Keegan (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and 2019 four-star all-purpose back Wandale Robinson (Western Hills, Ky.). According to Johnson, both would be great fits at Ohio State.

"Wandale and Trevor are great people, and they definitely could make a huge impact at Ohio State," Johnson told Eleven Warriors. "I definitely hit it off with both Wandale and Trevor, because we all have the same goals and aspirations as collegiate student-athletes."

The simple fact that Johnson made it a point to introduce himself to Keegan and Robinson says a lot about his commitment to the Buckeyes. He's expressed his loyalty to Ohio State in many ways since committing, but his impact on recruiting could be the biggest sign of allegiance yet.

As for Keegan and Robinson, either would be giant pickups for the Buckeyes. Keegan is the top-rated prospect in Illinois while Robinson is ranked as the sixth-best in Kentucky.

Awesome to see him meeting lots of other players and recruiting for OSU. Means a lot to have someone like that representing the team even before he gets on campus.
